1 Student Activities Photography Club The Ocean County Camera Club sponsors a student photography competition each year. This year Donovan Catholic was represented by Elizabeth Schucht and Shannon Tierney. Elizabeth submitted her Landscape image Nature s Reflection [right] and received a ribbon for Honorable Mention. Shannon received ribbons in Honorable Mention: Clochaxn an Aifir - Giants Causway Architecture - Time Will Tell Landscape This image[ on the right] was sent on to the Photographic Society of America for further adjudication and will be displayed at the National conference in Pittsburg. 2 On Saturday, April 29, 2017 the P.A.W.S. club held a 5-K9 walk on the high school track at Donovan Catholic raising funds for non-profit/non kill animal shelters in Ocean County along with other volunteer organizations. Submitted by Club Moderator: Tracy Jankows ki JoAnn Lopez, school nurse Congratulations to the Math League team for taking 2nd place in the Ocean County League Division B for the school year. Students competed monthly against the schools of Ocean County in both individual contests as well as Team Question competitions. Special recognition goes to senior Matthew Dalton who was the high scorer for the year.

3 The Operation Smile Club organized a Zumba night in our very own Gepp Gym. About 60 people came out and had a ton of fun following the certified Zumba instructor, MaryJo Garman. The event was followed by a fruit bar where the participants enjoyed bowls of yogurt, granola, and fruit. This event raised enough money to give three children free surgeries for their cleft lip/cleft palate in third world countries. Submitted by club moderator, Laurie Brown Congratulations International Student Graduates Our senior international students celebrated graduation at a reception honoring them, their biological parents and their American host families. Donovan Catholic graduated 16 students from Korea, China and Viet Nam who are moving on to prestigious colleges and universities. 5 We have been successfully using the new refillable bottle water fountain to save over 1,000 plastic bottles and have begun selling the school approved water bottles to be used in classrooms. The Donovan water bottles are $10 and can be purchased from Donovan s Den. Submitted by moderator Kimberly Gleinig Donovan s Student Council received the Community Smile Award through NJASC. The NJASC website stated, "A total of 66 schools submitted applications for this award in 2017; student leaders at these schools volunteered a total of 280,000 service hours! At the minimum wage of $8.38 per hour, this represents a service donation of $2,346, to their schools and communities! "Some of our 2016 State Officers returned to help present the overall donation of $101,000 from the Student Councils of New Jersey to our State Charity, Bianca's Kids." 6 On May 15, students and their parents who are part of the Veritas Scholar program, Law Club/Mock Trial and Academic Challenge were treated to the keynote speech of Dr. Jaclyn O'Connor, Class of Dr. O'Connor inspired the audience with her honest account of her journey to becoming a physician at Yale University Hospital. Below is Dr. O'Connor's vitae The evening also included a delicious dinner and recognition of the Veritas scholars and all those students who excelled in academic competition. It concluded with Emily Ostermann presenting her Academic Decathlon gold medal speech. Dr. O'Connor has over a decade of experience in the healthcare industry. She has worked throughout the US in both corporate and private medical centers, gaining insight and training in the clinical and business aspects of medicine. Her administrative background has provided a strong foundation for both patient and physician advocacy, which Dr. O'Connor believes to be a necessary component in navigating the current healthcare system. With a focus on Internal Medicine, Dr. O'Connor seeks to find logical solutions for her patients and colleagues that will improve the quality and delivery of medical services. Her years of experience as a Medical Practice Manager and her graduate education in Business Administration provide a unique supplement to her Medical Degree, as this enthusiastic woman makes her mark as a rising physician leader. New Jersey State Science League Junior, Emily Ostermann received the New Jersey State Science League Award for finishing in the top 25 of the over 300 students who participated in the Chemistry II (AP Chemistry) competition this year. 7 Campus Ministry The class of 2017 gathered for the Senior Farewell retreat on Wednesday, May 24th sponsored by the Campus Ministry team.seniors shared memories of their high school experience and learned some lessons from Dr. Seuss, Mr Rodgers and Pope Francis. In small groups they shared memorable experiences from their time at Donovan and what they were most looking forward to as they pursue their dreams. The retreat ended with a circle blessing and an opportunity for the students to give the sign of peace to all of their classmates. The farewell retreat was followed by a picnic in the quad.god bless the class of 2017! French Class Votes On Friday, May 5 th, two days before the people of France went to the polls to vote between Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron for their president, Ms. Mooney s French class researched the two candidates while watching them debate. The submitted their votes, including on the ballot the reasons why they made the choice they did. The class elected Emmanuel Macron for président. The French people agreed with the students, and voted Macron for president in the second round of voting on Sunday, May 7 th.

8 Senior Spotlight It was a rainy night, but that didn t stop the fun for the seniors attending the prom at the Ocean Place in Long Branch. 9 Marta Pawka is receiving a Meritorious Student Award from the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in New York for outstanding achievement in her studies of the Polish Language. She attended an award ceremony on Monday, June 5th, in Manhattan. Austin Cucchiara is the recipient of this year s OCPGA Caring Award. This award holds a sentiment that is very dear to my heart, serving others. Austin has designated over 571 recorded hours during his High School career to serving others. More than 255 of those hours were spent in his senior year alone. Austin has been very dedicated to the National Honor Society (NHS) as president and Groups of Extraordinary Students (GOES) missions; as well as Headstart, Cropwalk, the Food Pantry, Project Go, Interfaith and Habitat for Humanity. The most amazing thing is to see Austin's loving, mild and calm mannerism with children and the humility in which he performs each task. He never seeks recognition and notoriety so it is with great honor that I congratulate Austin and his accomplishments of selflessly serving others. St. Michael s College in Vermont is very fortunate to gain another Donovan Griffin as a Mathematics and Computer Science Major. Please join me in congratulating Austin. Submitted by Ms. Fischetti JUNIOR SPOTLIGHT John Simo n, a junior at Donovan Catholic is currently volunteering his time to spearhead the Second (2 nd ) Light the Night Walk in Ocean County NJ. John lost his father in 2015 to a blood cancer and he knows that there are many more families in the area that are affected by blood cancers. John is looking to his friends, families and local businesses to participate individually or by sponsoring the event.
