1 19th ANNUAL ON PROPERTY PRODUCTION SALE 1.00pm, Friday 9th February 2018 Mount William is J-BAS 8. All cattle are tested negative to pestivirus. Bulls are semen tested by Nationwide AB CHAROLAIS BULLS CHAROLAIS HEIFERS (PTIC)

2 Welcome to the 2018 bull selling season & our 19th Annual On Property sale. This year we offer the finest line up of bulls Mt William has ever produced. The quality throughout the draft is evident and the cattle are in great condition due to a fantastic season in our part of western Victoria. Our recent hay season started very well and then was followed by some late rains creating some challenging conditions for baling and carting. It is interesting that conditions in 2015 were so dry, crops failed due to lack of moisture. A far contrast to 2016 where flooding caused the opposite problem, whereby mowers could not access the crops. The result of this was that this group of sale bulls had the opportunity to graze the failed wheat (hay) crop over the 2016/17 summer and did well on it. As we all know environment and nutrition is only half of the picture. Genetics play a key role in an animal s ability to convert feed efficiently into kilograms of beef. Mount William has always had a focus on producing efficient easy doing cattle. The ability of the Mt William bulls to perform at the level they do is a direct result of careful selection, culling and investment in high level Charolais genetics over the past 49 years. What we are presenting in this year s sale draft is a real opportunity to access some elite genetics from around the world. The Palgrove Stud in Queensland is arguably at the top of the game in terms of sourcing/selecting the best charolais genetics from around the globe. Mount William has been investing in Palgrove genetics for two decades, allowing us to provide you with top tier genetics from our own elite Charolais cow herd. In 2014 we purchased Palgrove Hannibal for $20,000 who has really had an impact on improving our herd. His carcass attributes, softness, fat cover and overall phenotype have moved our herd in the right direction. His calves have been outstanding. Palgrove retained a semen share in Hannibal, and as such bred with him six months prior to us. We are pleased to report a Hannibal son was equal top price in the 2017 Annual Palgrove sale in September at $40,000. And five Hannibal sons sold in this sale for an average of $19,000. To reach these heights highlights the strong demand for herd improving genetics. Although the prices may be more modest for Victorian Charolais Genetics than in the north, there is certainly no lack of quality. You would be hard pressed to find a more even group of Charolais bulls in southern Australia than what is presented in this years Mount William Draft. Our bulls are ready to work, sound, versatile and transportable. They present a real opportunity to the astute local or interstate buyer. At the Victorian region of the Charolais society we have been discussing exactly what it is that sets Charolais apart from other breeds. There is a strong financial argument supporting the use of Charolais bulls in commercial cattle operations. The Five main areas are: -Extra weight in your calves, which means extra dollars in your pocket. - Greater longevity with Charolais bulls, meaning more joining seasons for the investment. - Higher salvage value at the end, meaning easier turnover cost of bulls. -Generally excellent natured bulls. -The bonus of Hybrid Vigour in a cross-breeding operation. In addition, the marketability of Charolais cross calves or Silver Calves is now firmly cemented in the beef supply chain in Australia. This makes Charolais infused genetics well sort after by feed lotters and processors. The Charolais Angus cross is particularly well recognised and sought after in Victorian Markets. The Australian Type Charolais has also come along way from its origins. Mount William was there at the beginning and experienced some of the early challenges. Extensive trials have shown that using modern Charolais Bulls to cross breed will not present any additional calving difficulties than any other breed. If bulls are selected thoughtfully and matched to your cow herd, then calving would not represent any additional concern than normal. As far as genetics go, this year is the last year Mt William will offer sons of Blelack Digger. They have sold extremely well in the past two years and inspecting these bulls it is easy to see why. There is no doubt these bulls have power, constitution and will add that extra grunt you are looking for. Other sires represented are Rosedale E-Tag, Mt William Dash, Mt William Gifford, Mt William Kingston town and Palgrove Dover, all Polled Bulls. We are continuing to use Palgrove Dover (P) in our AI programme. His progeny continue to be well structured, docile and the type of Charolais we aim to breed. Dover also has trait leading EBV s for 200 and 400 day weight. In this years sale we are offering a select batch of twenty straws of semen from Palgrove Dover. Another avenue to accessing a high performance Charolais sire. This years PTIC Heifers have some fantastic genetics behind them. They are a neat group; feminine and with plenty of volume and they come from some very strong Mt William cow families. There are a number of Palgrove Hannibal daughters in the draft, so a great opportunity to access these elite genetics. All the Heifers are PTIC to our new low birth weight Heifer Bull Purchased from the Galvin Familys Talgoona Stud, Talgoona Lanky GCL22E (P). We thank all those who have helped to prepare this line up of sale cattle and we do hope you are impressed with the quality and depth of this year s draft. We pride ourselves on providing our clients with a steady reliable supply of profit based genetics. We have every confidence in our cattle and the Charolais breed. We look forward to seeing you at the Sale on the 9th of February or our Field day on the 2nd of February Rob Abbott Principal, Mount William Charolais. Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) Calving Ease EBVs (%) are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving. - CE % Direct = Direct Calving Ease - The EBV for direct calving ease indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in purebred females calving at two years of age. - CE % Daughters = Daughters Calving Ease - The EBV for daughters calving ease indicates how easily that sire s daughters will calve at two years of age. Gestation Length EBV (days) is an estimate of the time from conception to the birth of the calf and is based on Artificial Insemination and hand mating records. Lower (negative) Gestation Length EBVs indicate shorter gestation length and therefore easier calving and increased growth after birth. Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers. 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for growth to early ages. 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for yearling weight. 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for age of dam. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal s genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age. Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is based on the cow weight when the calf is weighed for weaning, adjusted to 5 years of age. This EBV is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age and is an indicator of growth at later ages and potential feed maintenance requirements of the females in the breeding herd. Steer breeders wishing to grow animals out to a larger weight may also use the Mature Cow Weight EBV. Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal s milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of the daughter s milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the 200-day weights of her calves. For dams, it indicates her milking ability. Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is calculated from the circumference of the scrotum taken between 300 and 700 days of age and adjusted to 400 days of age. This EBV is an estimate of an animal s genetic merit for scrotal size. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny and therefore selection for increased scrotal size will result in reduced age at calving of female progeny. Carcase Weight EBV (kg) is based on abattoir carcase records and is an indicator of the genetic differences in carcase weight at the standard age of 650 days. Understanding BREEDPLAN Rib Fat and Rump Fat EBVs (mm) are calculated from measurements of subcutaneous fat depth at the 12/13 rib site and the P8 rump site (from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcases) and are adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. These EBVs are indicators of the genetic differences in fat distribution on a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with low, or negative, fat EBVs are expected to produce leaner progeny at any particular carcase weight than will sires with higher EBVs. Retail Beef Yield EBV (%) indicates genetic differences between animals for retail yield percentage in a standard 300 kg carcase. Sires with larger EBVs are expected to produce progeny with higher yielding carcases. Intramuscular Fat EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intramuscular fat (marbling) at the 12/13th rib site in a 300 kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable. Selection Indices Domestic Index ($) - Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (eg Angus) targeting grass-finished production for the domestic trade. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 430 kg (240 kg HSCW and 6 mm P8 fat depth) at 12 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability. Export Index ($) Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (eg Angus) targeting the production of steers for export markets. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 700 kg (380 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 29 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback, positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability. Accuracy Accuracy (%) is based on the amount of performance information available on the animal and its close relatives - particularly the number of progeny analysed. Accuracy is also based on the heritability of the trait and the genetic correlations with other recorded traits. Hence accuracy indicates the confidence level of the EBV. The higher the accuracy value the lower the likelihood of change in the animal s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives. Even though an EBV with a low accuracy may change in the future, it is still the best estimate of an animal s genetic merit for that trait. As more information becomes available, an EBV is just as likely to increase in value, as it is to decrease. Accuracy values range from 0-99%. The following guide is given for interpreting accuracy: - less than 50%: Low accuracy. EBVs are preliminary and could change substantially as more performance information becomes available %: Medium accuracy. Usually based on the animal s own records and pedigree %: Medium-high accuracy. Some progeny information included. EBVs may change with addition of more progeny data. - more than 90%: High accuracy estimate of the animal s true breeding value. Eye Muscle Area EBV (sq cm) is calculated from measurements from live animal ultrasound scans and from abattoir carcase data, adjusted to a standard 300 kg carcase. This EBV estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site of a 300 kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. Sires with relatively higher Eye Muscle Area EBVs are expected to produce better muscled and higher percentage yielding progeny at the same carcase weight than will sires with lower Eye Muscle Area EBVs. Breed Average EBVs for 2015 Born Calves As a rule, animals should be compared on EBVs regardless of accuracy. However, where two animals have similar EBVs the one with higher accuracy could be the safer choice, assuming other factors are equal. 8 By Drew Picford, Nationwide A.B. As with any species, fertility can be a problem. This is why Mount William Charolais semen test ALL sale bulls. Bulls are examined by Nationwide Artificial Breeders Pty Ltd for abnormalities including warts and penile frenulums, by undergoing a physical examination of external genitalia and conformation. The crush side test involves analysis of spermatozoa for motility, concentration, morphology and infections such as seminal vesiculitis. This information provides testicular and epididymal function which helps predict the potential fertility of the bull. Only bulls that pass this strict testing regime are certified and make the sale listing.
