Our appetite for better Healthcare
It matters to us A great meal is much more than great food. It sustains healthy living and is especially important for patient recovery, ensuring that unnecessarily long hospital stays are avoided and patients are where they want to be back in their own homes. That s why we ve spent the last 50 years perfecting meals that nourish and delight patients, always keeping customer and patient needs in mind. We re proud to offer food that helps to aid patient recovery. And today we use all our expertise to supply 33,000 meals a day to over 400 NHS hospitals. I love creating brand new dishes, but I also love improving the meals we already have. Being able to review our catalogue and thinking what can we do to make this better is key. Phil Rimmer, apetito Head Chef
The benefits of great eating begin even before the food arrives. Eating better = feeling better. South Devon Healthcare Trust Look forward to breakfast, lunch and dinner. If we ve learnt anything from our time in healthcare, it s that everyone should look forward to mealtimes. It s why we created our industry-leading catering system. It offers patients familiar, delicious and nutritious food to help encourage their appetite, ensuring that every meal is eaten and enjoyed every time. It also gives NHS partners a sustainable and reliable solution. Fresh is good, frozen makes it better. Every meal is frozen within an hour of being cooked, meaning all the flavour and nutrition is locked in at its best. We hand pick the best ingredients Each ingredient in every meal is carefully selected by apetito to ensure the best quality and taste for patients while helping customers meet budgetary targets. Our procurement process also allows us to trace every ingredient right back to its source. We meet government initiatives We meet the requirements of the government buying standards and ensure every recipe meets precise nutritional standards in line with the British Dietetic Association guidelines and Food in Hospitals guidelines. We lock in nutrition at its best Every meal is prepped, and cooked by our talented chefs, then frozen within an hour, locking in the nutrition, freshness and flavour and protecting appearance. We check every meal Each batch of every meal goes through rigorous testing to ensure the meals your patients receive taste great, are visually appetising and safe. We cater for all dietary needs Our wide range of meals have been created to meet the needs of individual patients. We offer an extensive range of energy dense and healthy choice options, meals that are appropriate for those with food intolerances and allergies, as well as for different medical conditions, such as dysphagia.
Sustainability for life. We re committed to sustainable business. That s why we consider every aspect of our production process to make it as environmentally friendly as possible. It s all about respecting the environment, knowing exactly where ingredients come from and offering the best quality meals that help to sustain patient health. We re proud of our contribution to social responsibility. But we know that to be ready for tomorrow, we have to keep working hard. Mark Lovett, Sustainability Manager Our commitment to sustainability runs through the whole organisation. We meet the government buying standards and carefully source ingredients, making sure that all new suppliers operate within Ethical Trading Initiatives. We support the British food and farming industry and 100%* of our beef is from British and Irish sources. We source our ingredients to always ensure the best quality and cost for customers. We source beef from the UK and Ireland, like these heifers and steers at Tracey Cottage Farm, just 15 miles from apetito, in Wiltshire. We ve been developing one of the country s most sustainable production and distribution systems. Since 2007 we ve seen an average 40% reduction in carbon, water, electricity, and diesel, as well as a 100% reduction in food waste sent to landfill. To find out more about our continuous work to improve sustainability ask your catering consultant for additional information. Our apples are grown at Fourayes Farm in Kent an award-winning family business that s certified by the Organic Food Federation and BRC. Over 90% of our fish is MSC certified. *except for corned beef and Category C meals
Our dietitian, Helen Willis, is a healthcare expert as well as a member of the BDA. Always searching for better. Making food that tastes great and aids patient recovery has been our mission from day one. It s what our registered dietitian and team of qualified chefs work tirelessly for. Whatever a patient s dietary needs, ethnic preference or taste, it s about offering them something good to eat. Exceptional food for everyone s taste All dietary needs are different. Whether it s influenced by illness, culture, religion, ethical choice or simply taste, our extensive selection of meals offers all patients a nutritious option. From homely favourites such as cottage pie and roast chicken to texture modified meals, Kosher and everything in between. apetito provides much more than a wide range of quality, nutritious meals and reduced wastage. It s about the whole package. Musgrove Park Hospital Somerset It s great to hear back from patients that our dishes are so well loved. Even better to know we re helping those people get better. Andy Willis, NVQ Level 2 apetito Chef Multi/Twin Meals: A huge selection of mains, soups, sides and desserts created to sustain and nourish patients. CarteChoix Meals: An individual plated meal system that gives patients more choice and customers an efficient, flexible solution to help reduce waste. Specialist Meals: We offer meals that are appropriate for those with food allergies and intolerances, ethnic, cultural and religious preferences and other special dietary requirements. 7 120,000 microbiological tests are carried out in our labs each year. Care and quality guaranteed. There is no compromise when it comes to patient nutrition. That s why safety and quality control are as important to us as the taste and appearance of our food. It s also why every one of our meals goes through rigorous checks and why we have a state-of-the-art microbiological lab that s approved by the Campden Laboratory Accreditation Service (CLAS). Taste as you go Our specialist quality control team tastes every batch of food. As well as checking flavour and texture, they re ensuring that all patients receive a meal that not only looks good but tastes good too. Safety Our lab technicians carry out microbiological tests on every batch of meals. Until it s approved by our laboratory no batch is released for sale to our customers. Quality assurance On the rare occasion that we receive a complaint regarding quality we have a dedicated team to investigate the issue. Our traceability system enables us to recall products and trace every ingredient to its source. We pride ourselves on going above and beyond ensuring that every customer has the support they need. Jayne Whittaker, Training and Operations Manager Our industry leading quality control system, only possible with our freezing solution, means we have the ability to check our meals to guarantee they are free from harmful bacteria, ensuring every patient receives the safest food possible. We re proud that our state-of-the-art facility in Wiltshire was awarded the highest global standard by the British Retail Consortium. After all, we know that our reputation and business depend on extremely high quality levels.
The proof is in the pudding don t just take our word for it It s all well and good us telling you what we can do for your hospital, but the proof really is in the pudding. So here s what some of our customers and their patients have to say: It s refreshing to work with people who really care not just about us as the customer, but the patients we serve.
