Prof. Dr. Peter-Andre Alt Prof Dr Peter-André Alt is the Director of Dahlem Research School (DRS) and Professor for Modern German Literature at Freie Universität. Prof Alt studied German Language and Literature Studies, Political Science, History, and Philosophy at Freie Universität. He taught Modern German Literature at the Universities in Bochum and Würzburg before returning to Freie Universität in Prof. Alt received the prestigious Schiller Award by the City of Marbach in He is also Director of the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School of Literary Studies, awarded in the Excellence Initiative in Prof. Gong Ke GONG Ke was born in Beijing, China, June In 1982, he obtained a Bachelor degree from Beijing Institute of Technology. From he studied further in the Technical University Graz, Austria, where he worked on wave propagation of satellite communications and obtained a Doctoral Degree of Technological Science. From 1987 to 2006, he has worked in Tsinghua University on wireless communication research, including microwave rural communication, personal and mobile communication, satellite and space communication, digital TV transmission technologies with emphasis on RF technology, antenna and wave propagations. He has published more than 100 papers. At Tsinghua University, he has served as Chairman of the department of Electronic Engineering ( ) and the Dean of the school for Information Science and Technology ( ), Director of Chinese State Key Laboratory on Microwave & Digital Communications ( ), Director of Chinese National laboratory for Information Science and Technology at Tsinghua from He was Vice President of Tsinghua University for research and international cooperation from He has been the President of Tianjin University since Prof. GONG also serves as Vice President of Chinese Institution of Electronics, Vice President of Chinese Institution of Communication, and executive member of the technical advisory committee for the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry (MII).
5 Dr. Herbert Grieshop Dr Herbert Grieshop is the Deputy Director of the CIC. From 2003 to 2008 he was in charge of the education and science team of the British Council in Germany. His team s main area of work included education policy and reform, promotion of the British HE system, academic exchange programmes and science communication activities. Before joining the British Council, Dr. Grieshop worked for two years as a Cultural affairs specialist for the US Embassy in Berlin and as academic co-ordinator for the DAAD in London. From he taught German language and film at University College London. Dr Grieshop studied at the Universities of Göttingen and Berkeley and holds a doctorate in Modern German Literature. Prof. Guan Naijia Vice-President of Nankai University Prof. Dr. Stefan Hormuth Stefan Hormuth is President of Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen (Germany) since 1997 and President of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) since Previously, he was Vice President for International Affairs of the German Rectors Conference (HRK), and also a member of the German Fulbright Commission. He obtained degrees in psychology from the University of Heidelberg (Dipl.-Psych. 1975) and the University of Texas at Austin (Ph.D. 1979). After his habilitation in Heidelberg 1987, he was Professor of Social Psychology at the universities in Heidelberg, Giessen and Dresden. His research centered on questions of the person-environment relationship, especially the adaptation to new environments and self-concept change, as well as environmentally relevant behavior. In recognition of his psychological research, he has been named Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science. Dr. Gisela Janetzke Gisela Janetzke studied Spanish, French and German Literature at the universities of Bonn, Munich and Mannheim. With her applied studies during 1971 and 1978 in Guayaquil/Ecuador and Lima/Peru she specialized in communication science. She holds a Dr. phil in semiotics from Mannheim University. Before joining the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 1980 she did postdoc research about the development of the mass media system in Peru. Since 2000 she has been Deputy Secretary General of the Humboldt Foundation. Dr. Birgit Klüsener Dr. Birgit Klüsener holds a diploma and Ph.D. of biology from Ruhr- University Bochum and continued working as a postdoc fellow at Ruhr-University Bochum from 1995 to From 1999 to 2000, she was a Humboldt fellow at the University of California, San Diego. In 2002, she started working for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), first as Head of section 311 and responsible for postdoctoral and international postgraduate DAAD programs in Germany, and since 2002 as Head of section 222 (Internationalization of Research). Li Jun Li Jun serves as Deputy Director of the Department of Academic Degrees Management and Postgraduate Education of the Ministry of Education, P.R. China. He has been long committed to the management of postgraduate education in the past years. Lu Tian Jian Lu Tian Jian holds a Bachelor and Master in Engineering from Xi an Jiaotong University, a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hong Kong Master and Ph.D. in Engineering and Applied Science from Harvard University and a Master of Arts and Science of Cambridge University. He has been a professor at Xi an Jiaotong University sicne 1997 and has been appointed Vice President for Research in Lu Tian Jian has been a visiting professor at numerous prestigious universities in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany and has been awarded
6 several awards and honors. Among his main research interests are mechanics of fracture, fatigue and creep, higher-order continuum mechanics theories (elasticity and plasticity) and size effects and optimal design and selection method for small structures, multifunctional and smart materials/structures. Dr. Dorothea Rüland Dr. Dorothea Rüland is the Director of CIC. Rüland studied German literature, history, and musicology at Universität Freiburg, where she completed her Ph.D. She taught for two years at Exeter (U.K.) and five years in Chiang Mai (Thailand). In 1991 she began to work at DAAD, heading the office in Indonesia from 1994 to 1999, when she was appointed head of the Southern Division, responsible for all DAAD activities in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. As of 2004, she was Deputy Secretary General. Until joining Freie Universität, she headed the division offering programs aimed at making German higher education, science, and research more attractive to international students and academics. Dr. Annette Schmidtmann Dr. Annette Schmidtmann studied Biology, Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry at the universities of Cologne and Essen. She wrote her Ph.D. Thesis on Molecular Biology (Topic: Oncogenic Proteins of Adenoviruses) at the University of Essen and continued to work there as a PostDoc research fellow. In 1991, she started working for the German Research Foundation (DFG). From 1991 to 1995, she was Program Director Life Sciences. During a parental leave ( ), she was a Research Manager ( ) at the University of Hildesheim and worked at the Bureau of Ethics Commission in the Medical Faculty of the University of Göttingen ( ). Returning to DFG in 2006, she worked as Coordinator Clinical Research until In 2007, she was appointed Head of Division Research Careers, Research Training Groups, Graduate Schools. Dr. Schmidtmann has three children. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan E. Schulz Prof. Schulz studied Electronic Devices at the University of Technology in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) where he also got his doctoral degree in electrical engineering (Dr.-Ing.) in the field of interconnect systems. From 1991 to 2008 he worked as research assistant and senior engineer at the Center of Microtechnologies (ZfM) at Technische Universität Chemnitz. His main areas of work are interconnect systems of integrated circuitry, back-end of line BEOL, development of competences in copper metallization, lowk-dielectrics, airgaps. He was group leader for BEOL/Interconnects and deputy head of the department Layer Deposition at ZfM and also worked for the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM). Since 2008 he is head of the department Back-end of Line at the newly founded Fraunhofer Research Institute for Electronic Nano Systems (ENAS) in Chemnitz. He was also made a honorary professor for Nanoelectronic Technologies at Chemnitz University. Prof. Schulz has more than 120 publications in journals, books and conference presentations and holds 2 patents. Dr. Irmy Schweiger Dr. Irmy Schweiger is a specialist in Sinology and German studies and started working as assistant professor at the Department Intercultural German Studies at the University of Göttingen in She is Executive Director of Deutsch-chinesisches Institut für Interkulturelle Germanistik und Kulturvergleich and is responsible for the Master s program Interkulturelle Germanistik Deutschland China (double degree) that was developed in cooperation with Nanjing University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Anhui University and the University of Edinburgh within the framework of an Asia-Link project.
7 Prof. Shi Jian Mr. Shi Jian, professor and vice-president of Human Resources and International Exchanges at Sichuan University, holds a MA from Sichuan University and a PhD from Lehigh University, the United States. He engages in teaching and research in culture and literature studies. He serves academically as Deputy Chair of National English Teaching Association and is Deputy Chair of the Translators Association of China, a member of the English Teaching Steering Committee of Higher Education, the Ministry of Education, China, Deputy Director of the Teaching Reform Project in College English, Ministry Of Education, China, and a member of the National Examination Committee of CET-4 and CET-6. He has a wide range of publications in monographs, dictionaries and textbooks and translated books and academic papers. Prof. Dr. Bernd Wünnemann Prof. Wünnemann studied Geography, Geology and German Language at Freie Universität Berlin where he also got his doctoral degree (Dr. rer. nat) in Physical Geography. His main research is focussed on paleoclimate issues in Africa and China. After working as a post-doc and lecturer at Freie Universität from he got his habilitation for work on the paleohydrography of the Alashan Plateau. From he was scientific director of the interdisciplinary center Ecosystem Dynamics in Central Asia at Freie Universität and worked as (apl.) Professor/senior lecturer on quaternary geology, paleoclimatology, sedimentology and geomorphology. From he was also guest professor at Lanzhou University for geomorphology and geochemistry. Since 2008 he holds the post of professor for physical geography at Nanjing University. He also works as guest professor at HuaiHai Institute of Technology, Lainyungang, Jiangsu. Prof. Xie Weihe Vice-President of Tsinghua University Yang Xinyu Ms. Yang Xinyu joined the Ministry of Education in 1986 after having graduated from Heilongjiang University with a BA in English Language & Literature. She studied at Nottingham University from under British Council Scholarship and got her Master of Education in She worked in the Ministry as senior program officer till 1995 when she was appointed Second Secretary for Education in the Chinese Embassy in Canada. She joint China Scholarship Council in 1998 as Deputy Director and later Director of the Division of Study Abroad Programs. She took the position as the Deputy Secretary-General of CSC in Prof. Zhang Wenjun Zhang Wenjun, CPC member, born in October Professor Zhang is vice president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, professor and Supervisor of Doctoral Candidates. Professor Zhang graduated from the department of Electronic Engineering of SJTU majoring in signal processing in July 1984 and received his doctorate in August He once served as director of the Institute of Image Processing and Pattern Recognition and dean of the School of Electronic, Information and Electric Engineering, SJTU. One of the nation s leading scholars of digital TV technology, Professor Zhang was appointed in 1995 to head the HDTV Prototype Development Scheme, a key national science and technology project. Under his leadership, the team designed and developed the first HDTV in China, a breakthrough in the development of the country s digital TV technology. In recent years, his research has focused on a proprietary technology, the terrestrial wireless digital TV broadcasting solutions, and the work has placed him at the forefront of wireless access technologies. Professor Zhang s honors include Second Prize of National Science and Technology Development Award (2003), First Prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Development Award (2002), National May 4 th Medal for the youth, Ninth Five-year Plan Key Project Award for outstanding contributions. He was also elected Distinguished Figures in Science & Technology in Shanghai, one of Top Ten Outstanding Youth in Shanghai and Rising Star of Shanghai. Professor Zhang is a recipient of the Outstanding Contribution Award in Science and
8 Technology issued by Shanghai municipality in Currently, Professor Zhang is one of the accredited professors in the Cheung Kong Scholars Program sponsored by the Ministry of Education. Professor Zhang Wenjun is in charge of the construction of faculty team, the construction of a digitalized university, library, and assist in the management of scientific research.
