Athens Foundation Parting Rotarians Aaron Ramsey, Fred Weber, Pam Harvey, Earl Cecil Spoke Rotary Begins Support for GOODWORKS Committee Created, Drop Box at Meetings The Rotary Club of Athens has officially begun its support of the homeless shelter, Goodworks. The board has voted to create a committee designed to help the shelter acquire some goods that it needs on a regular basis. A December 7 bulletin provides the first list of basic needs for the group. A drop-off basket will be made available at our Monday meetings. The Rotary Club of Athens will distribute dictionaries to Athens area third graders through The Dictionary Project this November. Rotary brought the project to Athens to enhance the development of literacy among school age youth. It is estimated that the adult illiteracy rate in Athens County approaches 17%. The Dictionary Project is a national nonprofit based in Charleston, SC. The goal of this program is to assist all third grade students in completing the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers by providing the students with their own personal dictionaries. A dictionary is a vital tool for learning and improving literacy. The personal dictionaries can be used at home or at school. Athens City Council Approves the Fountain December 6, Athens The Athens City Council voted 5-1 in favor of construction of Rotary s fountain to be located in front of the Rec Center. The fountain committee, under the direction of chair Mary Diles, has been working on this project for almost a year and began the official approval with the city this past fall. The fountain is designed to serve a number of objectives including the celebration of Rotary s 100th anniversary. Additionally, the city will use the donated funds to stretch the East State Street beautification projects a bit farther. A requirement of state law, the city will be spending 1% of the E. State St construction funds on beautification of the same area. The fountain will be housed on city property in front of the rec center (site of the former rec center). Through a partnership with Passion Works, the flowercapped fountain will be highly visible and will contain four plaques commemorating Rotary s 4 avenues of service. Funding for the fountain is provided by the Athens Rotary Foundation, The Athens Foundation, Rotary International District 6690 Matching Grants, and the Rotary Club of Athens. In addition, in-kind services will be donated (names not available at press time). Rotary Club Donates Dictionaries to Area Third Grade Students By Ric Wasserman Over 1.5 million students have received a dictionary from community volunteers involved in the Dictionary Project. More information about becoming a part of the project can be found at Locally the project is co-sponsored by the Little Professor Book Center, The Athens Independent Restaurant Association, Century National Bank and The Pigskin Grille. The Rotary Club of Athens, is a service organization comprised of local business people and professionals. The club sponsors many community service projects in the Athens area each year. Rotary International celebrates its 100 th anniversary this year.
2 Page 2 Rotary Volume 04-05, Issue 7 Rotary International Club on the Internet Meeting make-ups have never been easier! Rotary s first web-based club is available to all Rotarians who need to make up a missed meeting. District 5450 (Boulder, CO area) developed an initiative to begin an online club in 2001to extend Rotary to business, professional and community leaders in District 5450 who are unable to meet traditional attendance requirements because extensive travel, or conflicting occupational demands, or physical immobility, or residence beyond reasonable distance from an existing 5450 Rotary club. Since this is a valid Rotary club you can use this, too. Just visit the site, review a program, and send the Secretary a copy of the make-up card that you generate online. It s that easy. Visit Ram Gawande Speaker for Skidaway Club (excerpt from Skidaway Club newsletter-jane Thimme) Dr. Ram Gawande, last week s speaker, exemplifies the miracle of Rotary. His extraordinary sense of purpose and determination that have initiated and completed projects that include building a college, organizing a water project, and a program to restore sight to many individuals with avoidable blindness. These humanitarian works have taken place in Mahareshta, India in the small village of Umarked where Dr. Gawande was born. His inspirational personal story came to life with his slides and his sincerity. Our speaker and his wife, Dr. Sushi Gawande, currently live in Athens, Ohio, where, through Rotary he began a long relationship with Skidaway Club member Dr. Hank Crocci and his wife Suzanne, both donors to Dr G. s projects. Influenced by his father s value for education, Dr. G became the first physician in his family and is a practicing urologist. Dr. Sushi Gawande, a pediatrician, was in 1987 the first woman Rotarian (of Athens). Editors note: Dr. Crocci was a longtime member of the Athens club prior to retirement. "[Rotary has] proven how much can be accomplished when a group selflessly uses every ounce of the political capital it has to help the world's most disenfranchised children." William H. Gates Sr., Cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Joint polio campaign reaches 80 million African children From Eighty million children were targeted during the second round of joint National Immunization Days in 23 West and Central African countries in late November. More than 40 million of the children immunized were in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country. Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar launched the event in Abuja, the national administrative capital, on 19 November. According to National PolioPlus Committee Chair Ade Adefeso, Nigeria is now back on track in its efforts to eradicate polio by the end of He credits the turnaround to a firm commitment from the Nigerian government and support from traditional, religious, and opinion leaders, including those from the state of Kano who led a yearlong boycott of immunization activities. The boycott sparked a polio outbreak that swept through Nigeria and across its borders into 12 previously polio-free African countries. In District 9110, over 1,000 Rotarians took part in the effort including over 100 European and N. American Rotarians.
3 Rotary Volume 04-05, Issue 7 Page 3 The ebay Report By Bob Marinellie December saw a fine month in the hunt for different memorabilia. The usual items were featured such as magazines and pins. I have collected a good number of pins from around the world and U.S. For many clubs, however, the types of promotion do not stop there. Two items that share the same purpose and medium for promotion also span the range of styles: the bandanna and the scarf. In 1958 the Rotary International convention was held in Dallas, TX. Every convention has a host What Paul Harris Said Paul Harris, from The Rotarian, February 1947 of items for the conventioneer and oftentimes these items reflect the local flavor of society in that host city. For Dallas it meant the bandanna. Similar to the bandanna, the Japanese silk scarf from the Yokohama Rotary Club reflects the elegance of Japanese artistry at least as this club preferred to demonstrate. This 1950s era scarf is soft as it is beautiful. Measuring 17 x 17, it will be a fine piece of framed artwork for my home. On another piece of memorabilia note, I have been working on framing my collection and went through a 193 Intl Convention piece. Held in Mexico City, this program just happened to contain 6 pages of the Rotarians experiences at the convention. It was an enlightening piece of ephemera that reminds me to write more in life. One never knows who will read it It may take 70 years to greatly appreciated but it quite possibly be worth the effort. Japanese silk scarf of the Yokohama Rotary Club (top) and Dallas Glancing back through my anniversary messages of the past, it seemed to me that I had covered every inch of the ground; that I had told everything I knew. Then the thought came to me that I had omitted the question Rotarians most frequently ask me: "When you founded Rotary, did you think that it would come to anything like this?" My answer to that question is, "No." My thoughts on that day 42 years ago this month when the first Club first met, were far from any such thing. Recall Andrew Carnegie's answer to an adoring lady who asked him if he did not think that his great work was inspirational: "No, madam, I think it was more perspirational than inspirational." Rotary Foundation Every Rotarian, Every Year "A Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member is a person who contributes US$100 or more per year to the Annual Programs Fund." porting the continued growth of programs. In April 2001, the Council on Legislation unanimously passed a resolution approving the goal of US$100 per capita by the year Beginning in , Rotarians who give US$100 or more to the Annual Programs Fund With contributions of US$100 from every member every year, Rotary could nearly double its efforts to help needy people the world over, supwill automatically become Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members (RFSM), and are eligible to wear the RFSM sticker (provided by the club president), on their Rotary name badge. Each and every Sustaining Member gift to The Rotary Foundation is a gift of hope to those less fortunate. The Rotary Spoke is looking for guest columnists and photographers

Every Rotarian, Every Year By Wilhelmina Lusty July 9, Athens (RP) Every Rotarian, Every Year is the theme of The Rotary Foundation that you will be hearing and reading about in the months to come. At the Rotary International Convention in Osaka, Carlo Ravizza, Chair of The Rotary Foundation Trustees told Rotarians that a $100 per capita giving goal was unanimously endorsed by every district at the 2001 Council on Legislation and is the goal of the Every Rotarian, Every Year initiative. Achieving the $100 per capita giving goal will enable the Foundation to meet the need for humanitarian and educational programs identified by clubs and districts. A $100 contribution helps provide: Textbooks for one elementary school in Zambia 1,000 trees to help reforest desolate regions of Guatemala A hearing aid for a deaf child in Pakistan Deworming tablets for 112 children in the Philippines Cataract operations for 3 blind individuals in India 230 blankets for the elderly in winter months in Korea Speak to our club Foundation Chair Diane McVey about making your contribution. Treasurer Scott Malcom can bill you $25 per quarter or for the entire amount of your contribution. Your contributions will count towards your Paul Harris Fellowship. If you are already a Paul Harris Fellow you will earn recognition points as a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.
