3 This month we have three Franca Armstrong Dave Kobernuss Karin Tuthill Program Today s program was presented by Michael Ballman, pastor of Cornerstone Community Church & Plymouth Bethesda Church as well as founder/director of the Oneida Square Project. What is the Oneida Square Project The Oneida Square Project is a group that believes in second chances, and they re teaming up with other agencies to make Utica better, and the lives of people in this community better. Utica has been in a rough patch for quite some time, but things are looking up. Rebuilding and change often takes a lot of time. Sometimes you just have to look at the small steps people and organizations are making, to see that change. The Oneida Square Project is one group that s

4 helping with that change. The Oneida Square Project creates art and combats neighborhood blight to help make downtown Utica safer, more beautiful and more just through partnering with existing agencies, creating our own initiatives and social enterprises, and incubating community based not for profits. Not only are they helping employ those in the area who may have had a tough start in life, but they are also creating artwork that s making our city and our community look amazing. 5 Contact Location: 500 Plant St Utica, NY Phone: (315) Website: Rotary Minute The following Rotary History bites are from a booklet published by Clifford L. Dochterman who was Rotary International President from called, The ABCs of Rotary. Avenues of Service This term refers to the four parts of the Object of Rotary: Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, and International Service. Even though the Avenues of Service are not listed in the constitutional documents of Rotary, many Rotarians use this idea to describe the primary areas of Rotary activity. Club Service involves all of the necessary activities Rotarians perform to make their club function successfully. Vocational Service describes the opportunity each Rotarian has to represent the dignity and value of his or her vocation to the other members of the club as well as the responsibility of the club to undertake projects related to such areas as career planning, vocational training, and the promotion of high ethical standards in the workplace. Community Service pertains to those activities that Rotarians undertake to improve the quality of life in the community. It frequently involves assistance to youth, the aged, the disabled, and others who look to Rotary as a source of hope for a better life. International Service describes the many programs and activities that Rotarians undertake to advance international understanding, goodwill, and peace. Many International Service projects are designed to meet humanitarian needs in the developing world or to support relief and recovery efforts in the wake of disaster. When a Rotarian understands and travels down the four Avenues of Service, the Object of Rotary takes on even greater meaning.

Grahl condensed Noel Jackson, Michigan dentist, received a gift certificate from members of his staff to go skydiving because he was into adventure.

10 Noel is a member of the Rotary Club of Trenton, Michigan. His first jump was at 14,000 feet strapped to a professional skydiver. Noel enjoyed it so much that he agreed to do another jump with Shiva Koushik a Rotarian friend form Windsor Ontario. While waiting for the skydive, their wives came up with the idea of enlisting other jumpers and raising pledges for polio eradication. In August of 2014, a jump over northeastern Michigan raised $15, for Rotary s eradication campaign and was matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation brining $ to the cause. At a leadership training event in Koushik s district, Shiva began talking about skydiving. Many members became interested and signed up. Julie Caron of the Rotary Club of Toronto Skyline took the idea back to her own club. With many young professionals in the group, the club scheduled their own tandem skydive raising several thousand dollars for polio eradication. They hope to make it a yearly event. Noel Jackson would go up to people and tell them that we were skydiving for polio and gave them two choices. I am going to pay $ out of may own pocket to jump, and if you don t want to jump you must contribute $ Most people would choose one or the other. The sky dive holds a special place in Shiva koushik s heart. He says, This is one of the hightlights of my polio eradication efforts. It is a great feeling to fly like a bird."
