3 CALENDAR School will be closed on New Year s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (observed), President Washington s Birthday (observed), Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Programs are taught in sessions/modules as a result classes begin continually and are generally between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Laboratory times are between 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. A Deposit of $ ($ Hemodialysis Tech) will reserve your seat in class. Refund Policy. Note: All tuition and fees paid by the applicant shall be refunded if the applicant is rejected by the school before enrollment. An applicant fee of not more than $25.00 may be retained by the school if the applicant is denied. All tuition and fees paid by the applicant shall be refunded if requested within three business days after signing a contract with the school. All refunds shall be returned within 30 days. 3

4 ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS NURSING ASSISTANT Students must have a high school diploma or GED. Signed permission of a parent or legal guardian is required for students under the age of 18. ENROLLMENT Official Course Enrollment - Students who are not on the official class roll may not remain in class. These students must leave class and may not return to class until they have enrolled in the course and their names show up on the official class roster. Enrollments Dates are continuous because classes are taught in modules. Credit for Previous Education and Training is not allowed. 5 Odyssey Educational Center: GENERAL STUDENT POLICIES: Please Note: (Specific program policies are carried out by instructors and may vary due to content/coursework) 1. Attendance - Students are required to attend the entire course. A. Graduation requires that NAs attend (seventy five) 75 consecutive hours, Hemodialysis Techs attend 260 hours. i. Students will be allowed to make up missed hours with a written excuse for serious illness, death in the family/other serious event. ii. Hours will be made up within 72 hrs. during instructor office hours. 2. Failure and Probations Failing one (1) quiz, will place you on probation with a make -up quiz to be scheduled a. Failure of the make-up quiz will require restarting the program. 3. Missed exams/assignment Missed exams will be allowed one (1) make up exam, missed assignments are due on the next scheduled day class. 4. Cheating Cheating will not be tolerated, and is an automatic exclusion. 5. Uniform/Dress code Students are required to wear school approved, brown uniform, comfortable soft soled white shoes to all portions of the class, clinical and labs. a. No hats, caps, scarves may be worn. b. Students who fail to follow the required dress code will be sent home. 6. Grading Grading will be based on an Unsatisfactory/Satisfactory scale. a. All quizzes require 75% to pass. 7. Due process and Grievances All grievances or issues will follow the chain of command. a. Delegated Instructor (classroom) b. Primary instructor (on site) c. Program coordinator (schedule meeting) d. CEO e. You may also file a complaint at 8. The use of cell phones, cameras, video/audio recording devices, IPods, or other electronic devices are strictly prohibited. Use of devices during class, clinical hours or lab will result in termination from the program. Assistance - Placement assistance is available through Odyssey Educational Center Graduation Requirements: 1. Completion of the required hours: 75 Hours NA 310 Hours HDT 2. Passing of exit exam. 5

6 Certification: Upon graduation the students will receive a certificate. Owner and Program Coordinator endorse certificate. Classroom Attendance - Students are expected to attend classes regularly and punctually. The instructor will keep an accurate record of class attendance. It is the responsibility of the student to inform the instructor of any anticipated absences and contact the instructor to find out what work was missed during a period of absence. Unexcused absences and/or tardiness may contribute to your grade in this course being lowered. Academic Integrity - You are responsible for what you achieve in this class; therefore neither cheating nor plagiarism will be tolerated. Any material taken from other sources must be documented. In no case should one represent another s work as one s own. This includes information received from others during examinations or submitting another s assignments, papers, etc. as one s own. To avoid questions of plagiarism, students involved in collaborative research should exercise extreme caution. In addition to the other possible disciplinary sanctions which may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an F or a zero for the exercise or examination, or to assign an F in the course. Classroom Conduct The instructor has the primary responsibility for control over classroom behavior and maintenance of academic integrity. The classroom instructor can order the temporary or permanent removal from the classroom, any student engaged in disruptive conduct or conduct in violation of the general rules and regulations of the institution. The use of cell phones and text messaging are not allowed in the classroom. Disabled Student Services Any student who has a condition which might interfere with his/her performance in class may contact the clinical staff on site. They will provide you with a document stating what type of classroom accommodations, if any, are to be made by the instructor. The student is to give a copy of this document to the instructor no later than the end of the first week of class. Failure to do so will result in the instructor making no special accommodations of any kind. 6

The internship is unpaid and will be held at Triumph Hospital. Key Assignment Key Assignment The assessments should reflect learning outcomes from weekly quizzes and applications of lab skills learned. Each lesson plan should be based on state standards for the State of Michigan. Changes to Course Syllabus The instructor reserves the right to make modifications to this syllabus. 9 Enrollment Dates are continuous because classes are taught in Modules. Official Course Enrollment: One fourth (1/4) of tuition must be paid on/at 1 st day of class or students will not be allowed to continue course. Students who are not on the official class roll may not remain in class. ODYSSEY EDUCATIONAL CENTER Course Dates: Enrollment Schedule - (Hemodialysis Technician) January 28th March 29th April 1st May 31st June 2nd August 2nd August 5th - October 4th October 7th November 30th The Hemodialysis Technician Training program is a course which requires 260 hours of State mandated training and will be offered Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be two days of Theory and 3 days of Clinical. The Clinical internship and externship for HDT will be arranged by Jacqueline Collins, RN. They will be supervised by Paula Riddle DT/Preceptor. The internship is unpaid and will be held at Great Lakes Dialysis. CREDIT HOURS: 310 Hours Class Days/Time: Monday thru Friday 9:00a.m 3:00p.m Two days Theory, and 3 days Clinical 9

Discuss how dialysis therapy is reimbursed in the United States. 2. List two quality standards for dialysis treatment. 3. List the step of the continuous quality Improvement (CQI) process. 4. Describe the way that dialysis technicians can demonstrate professional behavior when working with patients. 5. Explain the certification process for dialysis technicians. WEEK 2: Module #2 Pages The Person with Kidney Failure 1. Identify the structure and function of the normal kidney. 2. Describe acute vs. chronic kidney disease. 10

11 3. List five symptoms of uremia. 4. Describe at least four conditions that often occur due to kidney failure. 5. Discuss the treatment options for Kidney Failure. 6. Identify members of the care team. 7. Discuss the communication skills dialysis technicians use while working with patients. 8. Describe the goal of Rehabilitation and the technician s role in it. *Assignment: Write a Three-page paper on someone you know on Dialysis/a famous person on Dialysis. *HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT: Due One Week from Assigned Date WEEK 3: Module #3 Pages Principles of Dialysis 1. Define the basic principles of diffusion, filtration, ultrafiltration, convection and osmosis. 2. Explain how diffusion, filtration, ultrafiltration, convection, and osmosis related to solute transport and fluid movement during dialysis. 3. Describe the principle of fluid dynamics and how they relate to dialysis. WEEK 4: Module #4 Pages Hemodialysis Device 1. Identify the purpose and characteristics of dialyzers. 2. Describe the purpose and chemical composition of dialysate. 3. Describe dialysate preparation and the three monitoring functions of the dialysate delivery system. 4. Describe the extracorporeal circuit functions and monitoring systems. WEEK 5: Module #5 Pages Vascular Access 1. Describe the main types of vascular access. 2. Identify the pre-dialysis assessments for all types of vascular access. 3. Describe the methods of needle insertion for AVF s and Grafts. 4. Describe the pre-dialysis assessment, accessing procedure, exit site care, and monitoring of catheters. 11

Explain the start, monitoring and end of a routine treatment. 3. Identify the vital signs that should be monitored before, during and after treatments. 4. Discuss the basic of Infection Control. 5. Explain how to draw up and give intravenous medications. 6. Describe how to draw a blood sample. 7. Discuss the importance of documenting Patience Care. 8. Identify causes, signs and symptoms, and prevention of clinical and technical complications that may occur during dialysis. WEEK 7: Module #7 Pages Dialyzer Reprocessing 1. Discuss the history of dialyzer reprocessing. 2. List two reasons why dialysis centers reprocess dialyzers. 3. Explain the steps involved in dialyzer reprocessing. 4. Discuss the hazards to patients and staff that can occur with dialyzer reprocessing. 5. List the required documentation for dialyzer reprocessing. WEEK 8: Module #8 Pages Water Treatment 1. Discuss the purpose of water treatment for dialysis. 2. List the components of a dialysis center s water treatment system. 3. Discuss the advantages of water softeners, carbon tanks, reverse osmosis, deionization and ultraviolet irradiation in the treatment of water for dialysis. 4.
