11 My Flinders experience Rob Sym Choon Nursing graduate Emergency Department Nurse, Women s and Children s Hospital (Adelaide) After 25 years working in real estate, I wanted a career change. I could have gone for any degree but I wanted to come out with skills that were portable. In the beginning I found I had forgotten how to study. It was a bit stressful approaching my first assignment but thankfully my lecturers were absolutely brilliant. They gave me fantastic feedback on grammar, English and presentation as well as the medical side of things. As a mature age student, I was consistently studying and taking whatever information I got from the University very seriously. When I arrived at University I also met a few other mature age students. We bonded and are still good friends. I picked up a lot of skills at Flinders. In nursing, it s the understanding of medical skills but also understanding how nurses and other medical professionals interact with each other. Understanding how the industry works is as important to me as anything else I learned. I m currently at the Women s and Children s Hospital. The biggest thrill is to have parents who thank you so much for saving the life of their child. It s quite gratifying even if it s only something minor which the parents thought was life-threatening. You ve been able to look at the child and help that family. Nicki Biermann Midwifery graduate Midwife, Goulburn Valley Health (Victoria) I m passionate about supporting women and families during their child-bearing years. There is a very deep responsibility and there is a satisfaction knowing that you along with the team needed to provide a safe birth are caring for two lives. I ve attended many, many births but with every one, there is still a spark of excitement and joy. Being a midwife and a healthcare professional, there is a lot more energy in monitoring the situation and providing the care that is required. There is a sense of awe that is definitely there. To be a part of a birth is both an honour and a privilege. Over the years I was practising as a doula a personal attendant to women in labour. I had an inquiring mind, so I wanted to become a professional in the area of midwifery. At the time I was living in Sydney and I decided to come to Flinders University. The academic profiles of the associate professors really appealed to me and also the cost of living in Adelaide was much better. I had studied at other universities but my Flinders degree was above and beyond anything I had studied before. A lot of my peer group found it quite a personal journey to become a midwife, and access to the academic staff as mentors was invaluable. Their support was outstanding. Beyond the clinical knowledge, the support they gave me to grow into my role as a midwife was priceless. 09
