During the winter walk ways and parking lots are not sufficiently cleared-lots of compacted snow and ice are 12 The issue with safety at CWU is not within our individual department, but with the safety and health office - do we even still have one? We seldom hear back when an accident report is filed (one of our staff recently fell on ice), reported it and has not heard back - two weeks ago. We have noone that comes and makes sure our chairs and desks are at the right height - what happened to our ergonomics office?? 1/25/ :38 AM 1/25/2017 9:27 AM 1 / 34

32 Q90 Please provide comments or ideas on how we can improve our safety program. Answered: 41 Skipped: 77 # Date 1 Install an AED devise on each floor and provide CPR/AED training to individuals. Just in case someone has a heart attack. If that is too expensive, at least provide mouth shields in case someone stops breathing and we can perform CPR safely. Mostly I just worry about heart attacks in my office setting although campus police are super quick to respond so it might not matter. 2 Encouragement to state agencies to offer adjustable height (stand/sit) desks to their employees. These desks are expensive so it's difficult for employees to ask for them, but they are important for health. 2/28/2017 8:52 AM 2/27/ :30 PM 3 Please improve funding for replacing older dangerous equipment. 2/24/2017 4:20 PM 4 CWU cut the ergonomics facilitator position a number of years ago. CWU only has one full time person to deal with health and safety. While he does an excellent job, he is only one person and does not get a lot of support from above. CWU is not committed to considering the safe disposal of lab waste cost as overhead and seems to be moving to charging academic departments for removal. This will result in some departments getting rid of things in unsafe ways as they can not bear the costs. The brand new building, Science II has ongoing issues with air quality and it has been a struggle getting anyone to take the issues seriously. 5 More information about air quality in buildings that don't have any outside air - access to air quality test kits in offices/areas with questionable air quality - access to air filters when toxic products used in the building 2/24/ :46 AM 2/24/2017 9:34 AM 6 Where is the fire extinguisher? Why are there no exit instructions posted? 2/23/ :44 AM 7 We have one Industrial Hygienist 3, Environmental Health & Safety for our university. This is a huge problem. We have to badger people to come and inspect hoods and other air quality issues we've been having in our building. Our IH person is wonderful, but we need more of them. There have been many issues in our building. One of which is the lack of cell phone reception. This is a huge issue with all of the active shootings occurring. No one in our building would be able to call for help using a cell phone. This is completely unacceptable and I am so confused as to why this issue cant be resolved. 8 Snow and ice have been a real problem this winter. Our Physical Facilities people have done a terrible job. 1) There are four sections of stairs near my workplace. They cleared one (1) of them so everyone is forced up that one path. 2) When I come on campus around 7:30 they are just starting to clear snow. I have to put on "Snow-Trax" so I can get to my office. 3) With the melting snow there are many places we cannot walk without going through puddles. One day I had to take my shoes and socks off when I got back to the office because they were soaked. 9 The University fails to recognize the hazards associated with work in the arts. We do our best to train the students to work in a safe manner but the is little to no safety program for the employees (both faculty and staff) in some very high risk activities (working at heights, electrical safety). Additionally, loss of storage space this year has caused a negative impact on housekeeping and maintaining an uncluttered workspace. Our program has outgrown its facilities and our working conditions and lack of accountability of my peers is creating unsafe conditions. I am part of the safety and health commission for the entertainment technology professional organization but I can make little impact in my own workplace by myself. Housekeeping and storage is our single biggest risk right now. 10 Make a university wide safety lab policy that Faculty have to comply with that is in accordance with state laws regarding safety. 2/23/2017 9:05 AM 2/22/2017 8:47 AM 2/21/ :27 AM 2/13/2017 9:27 AM 11 Our safety officer does a great job! This survey is too long. 2/13/2017 9:01 AM 12 Keep evaluating safety regulations and policies; making everyone safe. 2/9/2017 8:56 AM 13 Air quality and uneven floors are both big issues in the C.W.U. Brooks Library 2/7/2017 9:29 AM Be realistic rather than quite so paranoid. Students must be afforded the opportunity to actually use the facilities and the equipment if the education objectives are to be met. 2. Provide a greater presence and effort at the university level. Work on uniformity and continuity across the entire institution rather than a building by building basis. 3. Staff the university safety office with adequate personnel to do the job effectively. 15 CWU can hire safety inspectors/folks. We currently have ONE person for all of campus, and we seem utterly incapable (for a variety of reasons) to hire anyone else. A campus our size should have about 4. Further, ergonomics is not assessed at all, and even when there are issues identified, the university does not fund fixes. 2/3/ :22 PM 2/3/2017 9:42 AM 32 / 34
33 16 CWU does a good job with safety alerts (on the website or via cell phone message) and safety training (every two years). The only safety concern at this time is just slipping or falling due to all the snow and ice that has amassed here. Parking lots, some sidewalks and other areas were/are hazards, but I also understand that manpower and time are part of the equation for getting those things taken care of. It just "seems" like areas could have been taken care of more quickly, but this has been an unusual winter - lots of snow. 2/2/2017 8:55 AM 17 schedule more on-campus visits and tours 2/1/2017 1:03 PM 18 Implement a safety prevention department for the sole purpose of preventive maintenance. The custodial/facility dept seems to be under-staffed to perform routine inspections of potential unidentified safety hazards. They already seem understaffed to respond to reported, identified safety hazards. Those hazards increase during the winter and I'm sure extra temporary staff would be greatly appreciated. 19 Complaints about workplace safety issues are often ignored. Changes to improve worker safety are rarely made in response to complaints. 2/1/ :42 AM 1/31/2017 3:27 PM 20 Make sure all faculty, including NTT are involved. 1/31/ :09 AM 21 I do not believe CWU has a ergonomic representative any longer. Air quality does not seem to be a safety concern at CWU. 22 As an instructor the classroom safety items have been addressed and then some, so that we are quite aware of safety issues when they show up and how to react. 23 CWU has been without an EH&S manager for several months, and the administration does not seem to view it as an important position. CWU does NOT have someone who specializes in ergonomics, which reinforces the perception that the administration is not concerned about the safety of it's employees. When the university closed for inclement weather on January 18 due to an ice storm, I was thrilled that the university seemed to care about our safety - until I returned to campus the next day to discover that the grounds crew did not take advantage of the empty campus to take care of clearing sidewalks and parking lots for student and employee safety (slip hazards). All of the positive comments in this survey are a direct reflection of the Safety Officer employed in my department - they do NOT reflect the administration as a whole. Another example of the indifferent attitude this university has towards safety is their unwillingness to repair the roof in our building (Science I) that has been leaking since 2001 and causes puddles in the hallways and at the top of two major staircases. Whenever this is reported, we are told by Facilities Management (FMD) there is "nothing they can do"...if it had been addressed in 2001, three years after the building had opened, it seems the architect or contractor could have corrected the design flaw. Instead we're left with a huge hazard every time it rains or snow thaws. CWU needs to overhaul the EH&S department and give it the attention and support it needs to make CWU a safe place to work and attend classes. 24 More resources are needed for the safety program (human and equipment) to be successful - it is overstretched. Administration needs to communicate their unwavering support (organizational and financial) for safety to the entire campus community. 25 I don't know what department/who is responsible for maintaining a safe environment at CWU. Perhaps a more visible campaign to get the word out on who the safety folks are and what they do to keep our workplace safe would be a good start. Thank you. 26 Ergonomics are my biggest concern, having to sit all day behind a computer can take its toll, having desks that raise would be nice in order to stand 27 Our workplace does a good job with training for threats because it is required. I am trained in First Aid/CPR and training is available, but I think it would be beneficial for management to encourage this more. We used to have an Ergonomics department, but it has been dissolved. Providing this service to employees and management providing the ability for employees to address repetitive motion issues would show that management cares about their employees. 28 It would be nice if our safety group were audited. The administration does a good job of jumping through hoops to cover their responsibility through the use of training videos but hinders the EH&S behind the scene. It is very easy to set requirements and benchmarks for an agency to meet but without auditing the culture required to uphold the true value of the program is not present. There also seems to be an expectation to uphold safety without the needed time/personnel to accomplish the task. Audits should indicate the practicality of a programs implementation as well as the validity of its substance. 1/31/2017 8:55 AM 1/30/ :25 PM 1/30/ :28 AM 1/27/ :49 AM 1/27/2017 9:54 AM 1/27/2017 9:34 AM 1/27/2017 9:07 AM 1/27/2017 7:43 AM 29 none 1/26/2017 4:23 PM 30 Encourage supervisors to take a more pro-active role in caring for worker safety, not just CYA steps. 1/26/ :28 PM 31 stop treating people who have an accident or incident poorly. 1/26/ :27 AM 32 none 1/26/2017 9:32 AM 33 / 34
34 33 When we were given active shooter training (which is the entirety of the emergency preparedness training we take) the police officer told an individual that if he wanted to carry a gun on campus, and officer was unlikely to know and they can't do anything if they don't know. The statement made me feel unsafe. 34 It would be nice to have a staff (currently only 1) that could address safety presentations, L & I claims, ergonomics, etc... At one time, Central Wash University had a total of 4 full time safety/ergo professionals to assist staff, faculty, & students. 35 When referring to supervisor as responsible for encouraging, providing resources, and training for safety, this does not accurately apply to my supervisor. My supervisor does support me when I have safety concerns but is not responsible for training me nor making the necessary budget allocations for building/dept items-that would be Facilities Management, so some of these items are outside my supervisors immediate control which is reflected in some of my answers. 36 More accessible information and training for staff and shared each quarter would be helpful. This will provide an opportunity for existing and new staff to view information and receive training on this content. By providing at least 4 times a year it will help encourage people to attend at least 1 session each year to refresh their knowledge of the topic and learn any new content. 1/26/2017 8:49 AM 1/25/2017 3:03 PM 1/25/2017 2:08 PM 1/25/ :46 PM 37 Icy sidewalks are my biggest concern... 1/25/ :24 AM 38 CWU sidewalks & walkways are slippery! Whatever department is responsible to keep these areas sanded & clear AREN"T doing it!! Too many staff & students slip & fall! 39 Upper management has kept our environmental heath department underfunded, understaffed, and overloaded for years. Environmental heath dept. has been moved around under management. I believe now he reports to the facilities management archeologist. I appreciate what our one environmental heath employee does, but he's too overworked to keep up with an entire university with over 175 departments. 40 Leadership at CWU should demonstrate, through action and funding, a commitment to safety and health, instead of empty promises and inaction. 41 EH&S has been reduced from 4 people to 1 person over the course of 6 years. The remaining person (unrepresented classified) has had very little support from middle & upper management. He has been the sole person in the EH&S office for over 11 months overseeing the whole campus. The ergonomic program has been gutted and departmental safety trainings have been greatly reduced or eliminated. 1/25/2017 9:03 AM 1/24/2017 4:02 PM 1/20/2017 7:15 PM 1/20/ :14 PM 34 / 34
