2 2 Nursing Graduate Course Work Application Processes Undergraduate or non-degree students may enroll in up to 6 credits of specified * NURS 500 level courses without being a MSN student. (For greater than 6 credits, or other courses, students must seek departmental permission). Non-MSN students may not enroll in NURS 600 level courses without special departmental permission. (*Specificed courses include NURS 505 and/or NURS 506.) Taking CE non-degree nursing graduate coursework DOES NOT guarantee admission to the MSN and/or graduate certificate programs. The non-degree coursework may be applied to the program and study if and when the applicant successfully applies and is approved for admission by both the EMU School of Nursing Faculty and the EMU Graduate Admissions Office. Courses over 10 years of age at the time of graduation from a certificate and/or program will not count towards graduation, nor will they transfer in for credit. Next MSN cohort will be admitted to begin program coursework in Winter 2017 (January 2017). Certificate program courses run more frequently, and may begin before Winter See information below. Applicants should understand differences in these roles and the population and clearly delineate the specialty they are applying to in their personal statement. For those interested in the NP program, note that Primary Care roles are generally not intended for ICU/Step Down/ED positions in healthcare organizations. See information below, as well as AANP website at for more information about NP roles, and for further information about the CNS role. In 2008, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing APRN Advisory Committee and the APRN Consensus Work Group developed the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification & Education. This document defines the various types of Advanced Practice RN (APRN) roles. The full document can be found at: On pages 8-9 of the document, the following information is provided to describe the roles of the CNS and NP as follows: Clinical Nurse Specialist The CNS has a unique APRN role to integrate care across the continuum and through three spheres of influence: patient, nurse, system. The spheres are overlapping and interrelated but each sphere possesses a distinctive focus. In each of the spheres of influence, the primary goal of the CNS is continuous improvement of patient outcomes and nursing care. Key elements of CNS practice are to create environments through mentoring and system changes that empower nurses to develop caring, evidence-based practices to alleviate patient distress, facilitate ethical decision-making, and respond to diversity. The CNS is responsible and accountable for diagnosis and treatment of health/illness states, disease management, health promotion, and prevention of illness and risk behaviors among individuals, families, groups, and communities. Nurse Practitioner For the certified nurse practitioner (CNP) care along the wellness-illness continuum is a dynamic process in which direct primary and acute care is provided across settings. CNPs are members of the health delivery system, practicing autonomously in areas as diverse as family practice, pediatrics, internal medicine, geriatrics, and women s health care. CNPs are prepared to diagnose and treat patients with undifferentiated symptoms as well as those with established diagnoses. Both primary and acute care CNPs provide initial, ongoing, and comprehensive

8 8 care, includes taking comprehensive histories, providing physical examinations and other health assessment and screening activities, and diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with acute and chronic illnesses and diseases. This includes ordering, performing, supervising, and interpreting laboratory and imaging studies; prescribing medication and durable medical equipment; and making appropriate referrals for patients and families. Clinical CNP care includes health promotion, disease prevention, health education, and counseling as well as the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic diseases. Certified nurse practitioners are prepared to practice as primary care CNPs and acute care CNPs, which have separate national consensus-based competencies and separate certification processes. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY ROLE CONCENTRATION OPTION: Graduate Certificate in Teaching in Health Care Systems (CTHC) This 12 credit hour (4 course) certificate is designed specifically for nurse educators or those seeking positions in nursing education or staff development. The certificate provides both theoretical and practical knowledge focused on teaching and learning of adult learners. Course work consists of evidence-based teaching methods and prepares the learner for designing teaching materials, assessing learning outcomes and applying teaching and learning strategies when paired with a master teacher during the teaching practicum. Admission requirements include: 1. Admission to Eastern Michigan University Graduate School indicating Teaching Certificate Program and Program Code HCS/CTHC-HH (Applications are on line at 2. 15 15 EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY School of Nursing Nurse Faculty Loan Program Information The Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) is a federally funded program through the Health Sciences Research Administration (HRSA). It was created to recruit students enrolled in advanced nursing education programs into teaching positions at nursing schools across the country. NFLP provides loan debt reduction through forgiveness of up to 85% in exchange for fulfilling a four-year service requirement as a full time faculty in a U.S. school of nursing post graduation. To participate, students must be enrolled in at least 3 credits per semester during fall and winter semesters as a degree-seeking student in the EMU School of Nursing program, with a Concentration in Teaching in Healthcare Systems. * 1 To be eligible to qualify for the NFLP, students must be admitted to the MSN program, commit to serving as a nurse educator in a school of nursing within one year of graduation, complete the Certificate for Teaching in Healthcare Systems (CTHC) program while admitted as a student in the MSN program, and: Be a U.S. citizen, a non-citizen national, or a foreign national having in his/her possession, a visa permitting permanent residences in the U.S. Be a student in good standing in the MSN-Teaching Concentration program at the school. Have no judgment liens entered against him/her based on the default on a Federal debt 28 USC 3201 (e) Interest: The NFLP loan will bear interest on the unpaid balance of the loan at: 1. The rate of 3% per annum, beginning 3 months after the borrower graduates from the MSN program with a Teaching Concentration, or 2. The prevailing market rate if the borrower fails to complete the MSN program with a Teaching concentration program, or fails to serve as a nurse faculty member for the consecutive 4 year period post graduation. Service Requirements and Cancellation: The borrower has 12 months after graduating to begin working full-time as a faculty member in a U.S. school of nursing. AT that time the school will cancel an amount up to 85% of the principle and interest of an NFLP loan as follows: 1. Upon completion by the borrower of each of the first, second, and third year of full-time employment s a faculty member in a school of nursing, the school will cancel 20% of the principle of and interest on the NFLP loan, as determined on the first day of employment. 2. Upon completion by the borrower of the fourth year of full-time employment as a faculty member in a school of nursing, cancel 25% of the principle of and interest on the NFLP loan, as determined on the first day of employment. 1 *eligibility does not guarantee NFLP funding for any student, as funding is based on fund availability and varies from one year to the next.

16 Repayment: NFLP loans are repayable over a 10 year period beginning 9 months after the borrower completes the MSN Program with Teaching Concentration; ceases to be enrolled as a student in the MSN program, or ceases to be employed as full-time faculty post-graduation. Borrowing Limits: NFLP funds are awarded through the EMU Office of Financial Aid based on the most current cost of attendance figures. Students may receive total funding up to the cost of attendance for the year in combination with other scholarships and financial aid. A NFLP loan may not exceed $35,000/student per year, and funding is not to exceed 5 years. 2 Interested Students: Students wishing to apply for NFLP funds should submit both an MSN program application, and an application to the Certificate for Teaching in Healthcare Systems (CTHC) simultaneously. Interested students should clearly discuss their intent to serve as nursing faculty in their personal statement, and also indicate they intend to seek NFLP funding. Students should note that the CTHC classes are offered intermittently, and will add approximately 3 semesters of study to the overall graduate program. The CTHC courses must be completed before graduating with the MSN; otherwise, any funds disbursed to students from NFLP funds will become payable (at the prevailing market rate) upon graduation from the MSN program. Once admitted to both the MSN program and the CTHC Program, students may request a NFLP application from Dr. Laurie Blondy (contact information below). Students that are not admitted to the MSN program and the CTHC program when beginning graduate coursework will not receive NFLP funding for that semester. Dual admission to both the MSN program (CNS or NP track) and the CTCH is required. 17 17 MSN Program Requirements All admitted students must provide the following information to the School of Nursing, 311 Marshall Building. Scan/send to r. or fax to Health Requirements: 1. A current health history (on form provided). 2. A current health examination (on form provided). 3. Complete immunization record (on form provided). You must have received the vaccine or have a positive titer results. A history of the disease is not sufficient proof of immunity. Without this proof, you will not be allowed to attend clinical courses. 4. Annual documentation of freedom from Tuberculosis is required (negative tuberculin skin test, current negative chest-xray or negative symptom checklist by a qualified healthcare provider). 5. A negative 7 panel urine drug screen is required. This can be obtained at Snow Health Center at a cost of $40. You will be asked to sign a release for the School of Nursing. You can also have this done through your health care provider, Midwest Health etc. Students may contact University Health Services at EMU for health examination, immunizations and tuberculosis testing at , county health departments or personal health care provider. Basic Life Support Certification: You must provide proof of certification to provide adult, child, infant, two-person Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Healthcare Provider or Professional Rescuer. You can contact your local American Heart Association, American Red Cross or Snow Health Center (cost is $60) for information on obtaining CPR certification. Make certain it is a course for health professionals, not lay persons. Personal Health Insurance: Proof of health insurance coverage is required. Students who do not have health insurance through their family or workplace can obtain health insurance through the university. EMU has an Accident and Sickness Plan provided through United Health Care Student Resources. The EMU insurance plan is not available for purchase until August and will not go into effect until September 1 st. Information is available at Snow Health Center. Students who cannot afford this may contact the Public Health Department at ALL STUDENTS ADMITTED TO THE NURSING PROGRAM MUST MEET THE REQUIREMENTS ABOVE!
