Harvey s History August 13-30, 2017

Storm Overview Hurricane Harvey made landfall on Aug. 25, 2017 between Port Aransas and Port O Connor as a Category 4 hurricane Over the course of one week, the storm dumped a record-breaking 60 of rain, caused nearly $200 billion in damages and 90 deaths Hurricane Harvey is the nation s costliest natural disaster

Prior to Arrival of Storm Storm approaching alerts with expected landfall and prediction of impact Huddles with leadership and command center Staffing identified, ride out/relief identified Supplies and food checked Communication to staff about the storm and hospital s operation plans Communication to patients via written letter ensuring them that the hospital is prepared and they will be kept safe Discussion regarding the possibility of sheltering staff and immediate family, child care, pet care, food, security Daily briefing with Federal Emergency Management Agency

Concerns During the Storm Dynamic Factors to Consider 1. Weather event continues to evolve 2. Accurate flood and weather updates 3. Dialysis support 4. Physician support and availability 5. Staffing due to school and daycare closings 6. Staffing due to voluntary/mandatory evacuation orders 7. Coordination of emergency services 8. Available shelters; employees seeking shelter and daycare 9. Food distribution and infant needs 10. Mental health needs 11. Potential for rush, or influx of patients

Unofficial Storm Total Rain

Issues During Storm Large number of dialysis patients arriving in our ED due to severe flooding and free-standing dialysis units closing due to flooding, staff unavailability or dialysate supply depleted Retail pharmacies closed leaving patients unable to get their medications, pain medications, insulin Baby formula supplies depleted or closed stores leaving unprepared families without baby needs Surrounding hospitals closed including Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital, Memorial Hermann Surgical Hospital, and CHI St. Luke s Health-Sugar Land. We were the only hospital to remain fully operational in Fort Bend County EMS Ambulance overwhelmed and unable to reschedule those in flooded areas Local sheltering unidentified or unstaffed

Issues During Storm Continued Reservoirs overflowing, levees in question as to if they would hold. Areas began to learn of mandatory evacuations which adds additional stress and those looking to the hospital for shelter Specialty physicians concerned for their safety and safety of their families; unable or unwilling to assist International patients abandoned from their housing and left at the hospital entrance Patients arriving in the Emergency Room with their animals and unwilling to leave them behind Outlying hospitals flooding and unable to provide specialty care to the laboring patient and newborn

Major Road Closures

How Houston Was Affected Destruction in 10-county Houston Metropolitan : 127,615 single-family homes 2,111 apartments 4,780 mobile homes Dollars in Damages: $125 Billion Harvey related deaths: 88 in Texas Destruction in Fort Bend County: 1,551 single-family homes/apartments/mobile homes Destruction in Harris County: 99,803 single-family homes/apartments/mobile homes

How Our Hospital Was Affected Friday, Aug. 25 Friday, Sept. 1 HARVEY STATS 318 patients admitted 1,146 patients treated in the emergency department 142 non-elective surgeries 152 patients received dialysis (about 40% more than usual due to closures of many nearby clinics) 6,000 meals prepared 74 hurricane babies born 262 employees and family members sheltered 47 pets sheltered

Lessons Learned Providing shelter, child care, and pet care reduced our staffing concerns Identifying key physicians who agreed to move in and be available Providing transportation to/from work for those willing to work but unable to get to hospital Engaging dialysis staff to stay in-house

Lasting impact Houston Methodist raised $7.8 million through generous donations which was distributed to 5,300 employees Texas Hospital Association provided relief funds to 2,400 Houston Methodist employees We had 74 Hurricane Babies born

Areas for Improvement Availability of shelter facilities Access to Dialysis services Better communication of hospital closures

Harvey Facts 6 million people living in areas that received 30 or more of rain 3,000 homes flooded behind Addicks Reservoir 1,000 homes flooded behind Barker Reservoir 50 homes damaged in Fort Bend County by tornadoes Hurricane Harvey estimated total damages is estimated at $150 - $180 billion
