1 INTRODUCING SAMHSA MFP ANA SCHOLARS FY The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Minority Fellowship Program (M FP) at the American Nurses Association (ANA) is pleased to introduce the Newly Appointed and Re-Appointed MFP-Youth Scholars. April C. Bradshaw, RN, has worked in psychiatric nursing for nearly ten years with Veterans, children, and adolescents. For as long as she can remember she has had a passion for education, learning, and the power of one s mind to overcome tremendous obstacles. This is why she loves research, and why she chose to get her degrees in psychology and in nursing. The discipline of nursing allows her to combine the desire to learn about the mind, with the ability to treat and empower others. Presently, Ms. Bradshaw is partnering with an organization whose emphasis is on empowering young men and women who have mental illness and/or have been the victims of abuse. This organization partners with community organizations to provide support and mentors for young men and women that have faced these challenges. She is honored to have been chosen to be an MFP-Y Fellow and is looking forward to the knowledge and support she will gain by being a part of such an amazing group of people. Charlisa Brown, BSN, RN, currently provides mental health services to clients across the lifespan in a community mental health organization where she also works with youth and adults in crisis providing crisis stabilization interventions. She has also worked as a registered nurse on a dual diagnosis inpatient psychiatric unit providing care to both adults and geriatric populations. Ms. Brown worked as a student in an outpatient psychiatric setting serving children and adolescents. As a result of her experience in this psychiatric setting she has developed a desire to dedicate her nursing career to the delivery of psychiatric care in minority communities, with an emphasis on youth transitioning to adulthood. She has a great passion for providing culturally competent care and increasing diversity in healthcare. She is pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing - Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Northwestern State University of Louisiana and received a Bachelor of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Louisiana State University in Shreveport. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, American Psychiatric Nursing Association, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Meagan Carson, BSN, RN, through her work with children at the YMCA and her work with adolescents and young adults in the Center for Psychiatric Medicine has observed how impressionable they are even at an early age. She believes adolescents and young adults need guidance in the right direction which she provided previously in a mentoring program for children and adolescents. Ms. Carson believes that assisting adolescents to develop a strong foundation to build upon is vital to their survival in the world. Her philosophy is that teaching them that mental health is an integral part of

2 2 overall health and well-being is part of life lessons and a pillar of the foundation on how to survive and thrive in the world. She thinks that your life is molded by your thoughts and healthy thoughts are needed to survive. Ms. Carson is currently enrolled at the University of Alabama at Birmingham working on her Master of Science in Nursing - Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program. In her second semester in fall 2017, she plans on focusing on the mental health and substance abuse evidence based practices associated with the treatment of adolescents and young adults. Weichen (Sabrina) Chen, BSN, RN, is currently the staff RN at the Center for Dependency, Addiction and Rehabilitation of the University of Colorado Hospital, where the medically managed detoxification and stabilization of patients with addiction is the specialty. She immigrated to the U.S in 2008 with her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the National Taiwan University and Master degree in philosophy from the Tsinghua University in Taiwan. She later chose nursing as her second career because she treasures the interactions she has with people, from not knowing each other to gradually building a trusting relationship. Her first staff position was at the Menninger Clinic in Houston, TX, where she completed the 6-month Betty Ann Stedman Psychiatric Nurse Residency Program. After her graduation from the residency program, Ms. Chen sought every opportunity to learn about various evidence-based treatments to better serve patients with mental illness, including but not limited to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and Motivational Interviewing. She is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) student at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Denver, Colorado, where she also received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Ms. Chen s goal is to promote compassion, self-care and mindfulness to the public and eventually break the stigma associated with mental illness through education. Mrs. Chen is a member of the American Nurses Association. Teresa Denson, BSN, RN, currently works in an acute psychiatric unit. Her nursing experience also includes long term care, medical/surgical nursing, school nursing, and neurological intermediate care and intensive care. Her mother was a nurse and her influence is the reason Ms. Denson pursued nursing. Her passion to focus on mental health began years ago as she watched her mother suffer with schizophrenia. She graduated as a licensed practical nurse in August of 2004 and her sweet mother passed away in October of the same year. Years after her mother s death, a disturbing letter was found that her mother wrote to her congressman pleading for financial help for her and her children. This fueled a fire within Ms. Denson to help vulnerable populations with mental illness. The SAMHSA MFP at the American Nurses Association was the perfect opportunity to help her reach this goal. Ms. Denson worked as a licensed practical nurse for 7 years before graduating and becoming eligible to sit for the RN licensure board. In 2012, she completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Her current goal is to complete her MSN degree in She attends Walden University where she is pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing with an emphasis on Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. She is the Secretary of Black Nurses Rock Houston, TX chapter where the focus is on initiatives to combat major health disparities affecting black communities such as HIV/AIDS, heart disease, stroke and diabetes. She is also a member of the American Nurses Association and Texas Nurses Association District 9. Juliana Estrada, BSN, RN, nursing experience since 2008 includes employment in women's health, hospice care, and home health. Ms. Estrada s psychiatric nursing career began in 2012 in the inpatient setting, caring for hospitalized children and adolescents. She accepted a position with a mobile crisis outreach team in June of 2015 after experiencing the limitations that the inpatient setting can place on long-term healing. She worked full-time, traveling throughout Harris County, visiting patients in

3 3 their environments, with the goals of stabilizing psychiatric crises, assessing medical stability, and avoiding hospitalization, if appropriate. She believes that the outpatient setting allows for improved patient response and increases the opportunities for a more patient-centered, realistic, and appreciable recovery. Ms. Estrada plans to implement the advanced practice role by focusing her attention on reducing mental health disparities for underserved populations. She aims to specialize in child advocacy and assisting LGBTQI youth with mental health management. She currently attends the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing in Houston and is a student in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program with anticipated graduation in December, She is a UTHSC - SON PARTNERS scholarship recipient. Ms. Estrada earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Woman s University in December of She is a member of both the American Nurses Association and the Texas Nurses Association. Nicole Humphrey, BSN, RN, found that working in a rural underserved community with extremely limited access to mental health care influenced her to focus primarily on mental health. She is a firm believer in providing early mental health care interventions for children and adolescents that need them. She is also interested in researching ways to help increase mental health care and access to treatment for minorities. Lastly, her work in primary care has increased her interest in wanting to participate in research related to the opioid epidemic. Ms. Humphrey graduated from Morgan Community College in 2009 with an Associate s Degree in Nursing. In May 2015 she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington. She is currently a second-year student at the University of Colorado Master of Science in Nursing - Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program Her expected graduation date is December Ms. Humphrey is a member of the American Nurses Association. Katrina Im, RN, received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Boston College. Upon graduation, she was selected to join the Teach for America corps where she dedicated two years teaching high school students in an under-resourced school. Working in an urban school district has only solidified her passion for returning to an underserved community in order to increase mental health access and promote awareness. Last year, Ms. Im also had the opportunity to work with high-risk children and adolescents through intensive child, parent and family in-home therapy (IICAPS). Through this experience she was able to work closely with individuals to prevent psychiatric hospitalization and maintain stability within the community She is currently in her final year at Yale University School of Nursing studying to be a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. She is a member of the Delta Mu chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. Clarence Johnson, BSN, RN, graduated from Fortis College in Columbia, SC, with his Associates Degree in nursing. It was during his clinical rotations in nursing school that he fell in love with the mental health field. He passed the NCLEX-RN and subsequently got a job with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. He worked on the child and adolescent units and saw a wide variety of disorders that fascinated him. After about a year he relocated to Washington, DC. He enrolled at Walden University in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program. This educational opportunity will allow him to fulfill his dream of providing mental health services as an advanced practice nurse. He will be able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of children and adolescents who have mental health and or substance abuse issues. Having come from humble beginnings, when he graduates he will dedicate himself to the mental

She received her diploma degree in 2002 from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing and a Bachelor's of Nursing degree from Gwynedd-Mercy University in Ms. Weston has worked as a correctional mental health nurse in various prisons throughout Philadelphia and later in Tennessee. During these years, she realized firsthand the desperate need for mental health providers in both the community and correctional institutions. She is eager to complete the master's program and devote her full time, energy, experience, and expertise to helping those impacted by and diagnosed with mental health illnesses. She is committed to having a greater impact and making a difference in the lives of many people who would otherwise not receive high quality, compassionate, culturally competent care. Roseline O.
