1 How to reduce the risks to health & safety in the workplace Trainer requirements to teach this session For this session you will need the following: Activity.2.1a Handout.2.1b Handout.2.2 Learner Check for Session 2 Trainer notes The session will cover: Reducing the risks to health & safety in the workplace 2.1 The hazards which exist in the workplace and the safe working practices that must be followed 2.2 The particular health and safety hazards which may be present in the learner s job role and the precautions that must be taken 2.3 The importance of remaining alert to the presence of hazards in the whole workplace 2.4 The importance of dealing with, or promptly reporting risks Copyright Habia All rights reserved. 2 How to reduce the risks to health & safety in the workplace 2.1 The hazards which exist in the workplace and the safe working practices that must be followed Ref: Activity.2.1a Learners should be asked to find the health & safety risks and hazards on the handout. There are 10 health & safety hazards or risks in the picture. They are: Broken mirror Too many plugs in socket Chemical dripping on floor from shelf Hairdryer with wires exposed Blocked fire exit Hair cuttings on floor Pool of water Brush blocking doorway Trailing flex from hairdryer. Tell learners they will need the handout again for a further activity in Session 3. Explain to the learners that in the salon all employees have shared responsibility for the safety of clients, visitors, work colleagues and themselves. Tell the learners that it is important they are aware of the potential hazards but they also have a responsibility to take action and deal with the risks. When dealing with a hazard directly the learner has taken individual responsibility. Page 2 - Unit - Session 2. Copyright Habia All rights reserved.

3 Ref: Handout.2.1b Learners should be asked to read the scenarios, state why the behaviour is unsafe and describe what the potential consequences of the incidents could be. 2.2 The particular health & safety risks which may be present within job roles and the precautions that must be taken Ask learners if they are aware of any hazards within their own job roles and the precautions they may have to take. Answers should include: wet working contact dermatitis bad posture - muscle fatigue, repetitive strain injury and long term muscular injury hairdressing chemicals occupational linked conditions such as dermatitis, skin allergies and asthma. Ref: Handout The importance of remaining alert to the presence of hazards in the whole workplace Explain that this is about working as a team and remaining alert at all times. It is important to notice what is going on with everyone in the salon and not just with the learner s own working space. Ask what learners may be able to do to help their colleagues in relation to health & safety. Copyright Habia All rights reserved. Page 3 - Unit - Session 2.

4 Answers could include the following: Tidy away towels and capes that may have been left hanging on chairs Dispose of unused chemicals correctly Sweep up hair 2.4. The importance of dealing with or promptly reporting risks Ask learners for examples of any, hazards, risks or situations they have dealt with in the salon, or in any other previous working environment. Check how it made them feel. Were they in control of the situation, did they feel comfortable dealing with the incident? Ask learners why it is important to deal with or report matters straightaway. Answers should include the following: To prevent a hazard becoming a risk This is an opportunity to highlight potential health & safety issues that learners may be facing in their salons. If issues are raised ensure they are recorded, actioned and followed up. Now use the Learner Check for Session 2 to check the understanding of the learner. Page 4 - Unit - Session 2. 5 Ensure your own actions reduce risks to health & safety Learner Check Session 2 1. Give three examples of how you can help other people in the salon in relation to health & safety. 1. Tidy away towels left hanging on chairs. Dispose of unused chemicals correctly. Sweep up hair. Clean up used tint bowls and brushes. Or any other methods of helping colleagues. 2. Why is it important to deal promptly with health & safety issues? 3. List three safe working practices that should be observed when shampooing and conditioning hair. 2. To prevent a hazard becoming a risk. 3. Avoid spilling water, check temperature of water for client, wear protective gloves to prevent dermatitis. Or any other safe working practices for shampooing. 4. What would you do if you feel you were unable to deal with a health & safety situation yourself? 4. Report the incident to a responsible person.
