With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you will find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I m at this level). After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag. We look forward to the next Big Walk in 2019 and hope to have all of our Residents participating as well as families and friends of Rusoord.

The Next BRING & BRAAI will be held on Friday 25 18:00. Invite your family and friends to join you and come enjoy a braai at your home. We look forward to seeing everyone around the fires. The Next LOTTO Draw will be held on Thursday 31 May 18:30 in the hall. Remember to give your numbers through to Renee Healy before the Lotto Draw and come to the draw on the evening. Family Fundraising Committee We recently started a family fundraising committee where we asked the family of Residents who were willing to and wanting to assist with fundraising o join us in our efforts. The family members who have volunteered thus far are very positive and we can already see the difference. If anyone else would like to get involved please feel free to contact marlene@plumrus.co.za

5 Frankie Redfern on her Way to Durban On May 1 st 1967, Pam Wright and I started our nursing training at Addington Hospital in Durban. This was the beginning of a career that has spanned 51 years and has been enriching and at times stressful and frustrating. Some of the highlights include starting in the 'old Addington' which still had the long, wooden floored wards with beds on both sides. Damp tea leaves were sprinkled on the floor when sweeping to reduce dust! starched uniforms that we folded up and tucked in at the waist to make as short as possible and keep in place with a starched belt. One learnt not to stand too close to the dressing trolley - the males could see the reflection of what was under the uniform. preparing the new wards for occupation - dusting, unwrapping equipment, making up the new beds. ( it is heart breaking to see the current state of the hospital). working in the Children's block with all its ghosts - still standing today and quite derelict. the hours spent either on the roof of the nurses home or on the beach - trying to sleep and tan when working night duty. the last day in college when we had a party and returned to lectures a bit under the weather. I landed up in the staff ward for the night. The all knowing Doctor wrote " nausea and vomiting" and prescribed some anti-emetic! wearing paper caps and graduation with veils. How proud we all were with our lamps at that majestic city hall. We looked so smart and knowledgeable. We did know still the challenges we faced. sailing to Cape Town on the Edinbrough Castle with a friend, to start Midwifery at Mowbray/Groote Schuur Hospitals. being lucky to experience District Nursing in the remnants of District 6 and to do two deliveries there. The second one I was alone and the supervising sister arrived after I had done the delivery alone. That was a proud moment. The families were so friendly and insisted on giving you tea - with condensed milk! the dashes in The Flying Squad to attend to Midwifery emergencies in the Cape Flats. being at Mowbray when Barbara and Chris Barnard had their first son. Having the opportunity to talk to Chris - I found him rude and abrupt. working with Durban City Council in the well baby clinic. Here I learnt to give injections as I did the immunization, also the typhoid vaccine to food workers. we used to get the sisters working in the townships to buy rump steak and ox tail at the butchers there. Not popular with the local people, they sold for a good bargain. returning to Addington as a practical training sister, I went on to do the Diploma in Nursing Education in 1966 and graduated in '67 at the medical school. We were a pilot project - combined races together as one group. This was rewarding as one learnt of the problems in the other communities - not that most of them would admit to them. working back my study bursary, I taught in the college and then swopped to do Clinical Training in the wards. Started marking Nursing Council examinations - the biggest challenge was to decipher the bad hand writing of the students. moving to Cape Town in I was sold on the city when I spent the midwifery year here. I started working at Mondesir Home for elderly in Milnerton at weekends. This was a small home with a frail care and the carers were expected to do the washing using the machine. I assisted hanging up the linen - did not have enough to do! Constantiaberg Medi Clinic was almost built and in 1988 I applied for a post. The matron advised me I was too 'qualified' to work in the wards and placed me in ICU. What a shock to the system - ventilators, major surgery, arterial lines. I learnt quickly and had colleagues that were supportive and helped me. this was the year that Nelson Mandela was admitted to a section of the surgical ward. One weekend the surgical sisters were sick and I was allocated to fill in. When I went to check on his condition, he invited me to sit down and talk. Interested in who I was, the family. Please do not feed birds with water or seeds. It makes pest control inefficient and the bird excretion is everywhere on our buildings and vehicles from here I worked as The Clinic Sister responsible for standards in care. Did training, orientation, infection control, health and safety. In addition when the senior sisters were on leave I was delegated to take charge of medical, surgical and Orthopaedic wards. It was here that I worked with Bridget May.

6 in 1992 I registered at Unisa to do the nursing degree - this was after my divorce and I had to do something because I realized I was on a slippery slope. Working full time and with 2 children I had to manage my time. Must admit, the girls learnt good study habits - early morning, after supper and at weekends for me. I completed my degree in '96 - majoring in Administration and Ethos. After the graduation ceremony, I walked all round the hospital to show the staff what I had worked for. returning from my trip to Australia in 2002 I decided that a change was needed and applied for vacant post -Medical, Oncology and Haematology. This was hard work with 42 patients and the ward almost always full. Nelson Mandela, now the president, returned to visit the hospital. I took a young patient who was not doing well with her Leukaemia treatment. Told her there was a surprise for her. When she saw Mandela, the tears rolled out of her eyes. He asked me about her and he spoke to her - so motivating and kind. Not long after this she died. once the alterations were finished, the new Haematology ward was ready and there was a post there. Applied - would get the same salary managing an 18 bedded ward. This was one of my most rewarding experiences. The patients were really sick - after intensive chemotherapy, side effects of treatment, post transplant. One spent so much time with the patients they became friends - knew about the family, their homes, the pets. It was here that Aloise learnt her skills - as an assistant nurse we relied on her so much to get on with the basic care and assist us. with the nursing manager resigned to go and experience the ship life, I applied for the position. I was told by HR that the 'time had come to appoint a professional manager' and I was not suitable. I never found out what that was! the hospital appointed an Afrikaans male who had hair like Jan van Riebeck. We referred to him 'Mr Sister'. on call when the gentleman fell asleep with a cigarette and caused a fire in the surgical ward. Everyone close, was called in. Luckily there was no loss of life but the fire and water damage cost millions. I applied for the deputy nursing position and was promoted. It was not long before I got the Mr Joey Pillay fell off of a ladder during April and spent a week in Kingsbury Hospital. He is position as manager. recovering quickly. We wish him strength and for Ursula patience and wisdom.

7 one of the doctors sent me a letter -'congratulations on being booted to the top'. walking into the ICU one day, I saw Pam lying in the bed. Greeted her and she asked what I was doing there. Replied that I was the manager - her reply is not printable. after 20 years I decided to make a change and applied to work in Saudi Arabia. Being accepted I gave my notice and left Constantiaberg with many memories and countless photos. Saudi Arabia was an experience. The work I was doing as Assistant Nursing Director, was similar to what I had done before. being collected at the Tabuk airport I was met by one of the nursing sisters. The first thing she said the me was that I was too thin but they would soon fatten me. I was quite concerned. uniform - a long black skirt and white long sleeved shirt with a double bodice so that the bra was not visible. One morning I tripped coming up the stairs. I fell forward and knocked my head causing a cut. The knees too were painful. The Pakistani technician saw me first and offered to fetch me a wheelchair to take to ER. No way - I walked there and required some stitches. the work force included 40 nationalities. Many spoke an English and we did have interpreters in the wards. One learnt the words required for the basics. I also landed up in hospital for a few days. Discovered that nurses all over are the same. As I was a manager, they tended to ignore me and left me to get on with it. Can you imagine how difficult it was to get to the bathroom with a painful leg and have to hop all the way and pray you don't fall. having little to do after hours I read about 24 books a month. I started a patchwork quilt and did not get far. Perhaps I will have time now. I went to the Souk in the bus at least twice a week - with no sales tax, the items were reasonably priced. Certainly did not go overboard like many South Africans who bought all sorts of furniture and sent it home. As per our House Rules - No pot plants are permitted to be placed in the passages or foyers. They are a falling hazard and cannot be placed where elderly persons walk. did not buy under clothes - no way I was going to be assisted by a male. There were no woman serving in the shops at this stage. people were polite and buying items was great fun. During the World Cup soccer, the locals would be quite excited when you said that was where you were from. I loved buying the flat bread straight off the hot stone. Would walk along eating it. Really was addictive and I had to ration myself as I was conscious of weight gain. as most the staff were weary of being friends due to my position, I was left alone a lot. Even the senior SA nurses did this. invited to the various national days and celebrations, I got to sample so many foods. Would have a taste of most things and if to my liking, I would eat a bit More. caring for the females was different - curtains drawn around the bed all the time so that they were not visible to men! Made observation difficult. with no general practitioners, the Family Medicine Dept was a GP service daily. The numbers that came through here! Staffed daily by 20 doctors and saw about 900 a day. the incidence of renal failure was high and approximately 60 were on dialysis daily in 2 shifts. This included a number of small children due to congenital abnormalities. as women did not drive, it was not unusual to see young boys driving the mother to the shops. They could hardly see over the dashboard! resigning after 3 years I had a international farewell party. What a send off. home again and bored to tears, I survived for 5 months - Feb 2012 I started work at Murambi House and got satisfaction caring for the elderly. I t was here that I worked with Chantal and Lenore. August 2013 started here at Plumstead Rusoord. Here again, I met up with Pam and a few residents that had been at Murambi. I have had a rewarding and challenging time here. As I prepare to leave, I know that I have been enriched and gained much by my experience. There are many special people here - residents, family and staff. From everyone I have learnt and I know that I can look back on a job I have done to ensure that everyone gained. I will leave with many memories and visiting Cape Town In the future, I will pop in to see what is going on. I move to Durban and have bought a house in Kloof together with my daughter and her husband. There is a separate 2 bedded cottage for me. I will keep busy supervising Xavier who is now almost 7 months.

8 New Dementia Support Group Launch Mr Wilbur Van Niekerk, a member on the PlumRus Board who had family living in our Dementia Zone has undertaken to start a Dementia Support Group at Rusoord in liaison with Dementia SA. The Support Group will launch at The Protea Coffee Shop on Saturday 12 May 14:30. The Support Group will meet every second Saturday. Dementia SA have agreed to supply speakers with knowledge and expertise in this area. The idea behind the group is to fill a void where families feel alone and do not know how to cope or what to expect. This is a judgement free group where you can raise concerns, share stories or just listen. All interested persons are most welcome to attend and will be welcomed with open arms. We look forward to seeing you there and hope that this will make a small difference to some.

9 From the Gardens of Rusoord We had another very interesting talk by Heather Howell on Tuesday 3 April This time it was all on penguins. What a lot of information she gave us on these little creatures. There was a very good turnout of Residents and I am sure everyone enjoyed it. Then on Monday 11 April 2018, 13 Residents went on an outing to Boulders to see the Penguins in their home environment. What a pleasure it was. A number of them were in their burrows sitting and there were eggs and even a few babies. Many others were basking in the sun or having a swim. It was a very successful outing on a perfect day weather wise. I was very sorry to read, the next day, that a number of the penguins at Boulders had contracted avian flu. It is brought by the wild birds and is impossible to prevent. Let us hope that not too many of these funny little characters contact this deadly disease. Biltong & Wine Festival held on Friday 20 April 2018 Time has flown and the Flagship event of Rusoord, the Biltong & Wine Festival has just taken place. This year took us by surprise. Our tickets sold out within days, we added 20 tickets and they sold out within minutes. We then decided to trust that the weather would cooperate and extended the function to outside. We added another 30 tickets on top of the 240, which also sold out within a day. As per usual, we fit a few extra people in here and there and had to stop when our ticket sales reached 290. The phone calls, and facebook enquiries for tickets did not end and we were still receiving call at 18:45 on the evening if the function but unfortunately, we could not add any more tickets. We had a record amount of ticket sales, wine sponsorships and our Champions came through for us with donations like the champions they are to Rusoord, its Residents and our elderly community. We would like to thank every single person who donated whether goods, funds, expertise or time. Every single one of our Champions made all of the difference in making this the most successful and profitable Biltong & Wine we have ever had. As many people know by now our goal for fundraising for this year is to raise enough funds to extend our Dementia Unit. This is a big need and we know that every drop of blood, sweat and tears going into these fundraisers will be worth it and more once we are able to extend the Dementia unit. This will allow our current Residents the space and freedom to have the best time of their lives and enable us to assist more families in the community with day care for their elderly family members and hopefully alleviate some pressure for them.

11 Outing to Ardene Gardens During April we decided that we should get our Residents out in nature while the weather still permits so we decided to arrange two outings to Ardene Gardens. The first trip unfortunately had to be cancelled but the second trip was a full house. Ardene Gardens is home to so much beauty, large lush trees and the most gorgeous greenery you can lay your eyes on in the drought stricken Western Cape. Johan, PlumRus s driver who is by far winning the race for most favoured staff member accompanied the Residents on the outing and took in the beautiful surrounding with them. Thank you to Johan for always walking the extra mile and making the outings, shopping trips or even just trips to doctors extra special and fun for our Residents. Rib & Beer Evening BIG AUCTION Save the date 25 August 2018 f or our BIG auction as well as a Rib & Beer Evening. Mense is welkom om enige ongebruikte items wat die huis volstaan en stof vergader vir ons te skenk om ons droom om ons Alzheimer afdeling te vergroot te bewerkstellig. Advice from Sister Schenell In following last months notes regarding the role Nature plays in peoples lives, the following to note. 1. Environment- Many natural environments are calming and restorative, providing an appropriate level of sensory stimulation for people with dementia. People with dementia can either be over or under stimulated indoors and being outside in gardens can provide opportunities to reminisce and appreciate the present, thus ensuring calmness. 2. Therapeutic Interventions-Nature touches one s soul and connecting with plants, animals and spending time in natural areas, can reduce the stress levels and fosters a sense of belonging. At a physical level, hormones associated with a sense of ease and connection help the body heal. 3. Conclusion-Understanding the many benefits of nature to our health and wellbeing, it is up to those who care for the people with dementia, to invite them outside and create opportunities to renew everyone s soul in the process, through connecting with the elements, with beaty and with live. 15 MEDIA Lunch During April, we invited some members of the media to come to Rusoord and see what we get up to on a daily basis but also what our plans are for The lovely Philna Pienaar from Primedia and Lauren Mushfieldt from Independent Newspapers joined us for lunch. It was great conversation and we really appreciate them making the time to join us and assist us with their expertise and advice regarding fundraising, marketing and advertising. Talks by Dietician Students from UCT During April, we were blessed to have four Dietician Students from UCT join Rusoord for a week. They gave a talk every day, regarding the different food groups, quantities you need and how to stay healthy. They even had an exercise day for the Residents. The Residents grew very fond of them very quickly and we hope to have them back at Rusoord again soon.

Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret. Life is too short to be small. It is for us to pray not for tasks equal to our powers, but for powers equal to our tasks.no winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn. Hope is the companion of power, and mother of success; for who so hopes strongly has within him the gift of miracles. The real glory is being knocked to your knees and then coming back. That`s real glory. That`s the essence of it. Faith is to believe what you do not yet see; the reward for this faith is to see what you believe. Careers like rockets, don`t always take off on schedule. The key is to keep working the engines. Success is never permanent, and failure is never final. Don`t worry about anything. Worrying never solved anything. All it does is distort your mind.
