2 August 2017 The Central Line Howdy! On behalf of Texas Nursing Students Association, Inc., I wish to thank you for your dedication to your nursing education and professional development. To tell you a little bit about myself, I am currently a student at Covenant Health School of Nursing in Lubbock, TX and plan to graduate this September. I am also enrolled to start the RN-BSN program at Lubbock Christian University in October. I am part of the nurse residency program for critical care at University Medical Center in Lubbock, TX. After completion of my BSN in December 2018, I expect to commission as a U.S. Naval Officer through the U.S. Navy Nurse Candidate Program. I haven t decided whether to make a career out of the military or not. As of right now, I have a great path laid out before me, so I am grateful for anything I come across. Eventually, I would like to pursue my DNP or Ph.D. in nursing and instruct critical care. This year is going to be very exciting! The Board of Directors has a great year planned for you, and I am thankful to be a part of it. Our state project will include providing education, awareness, and prevention of human trafficking in Texas. Unfortunately, human trafficking is growing rampant in this state and, although other agencies and organizations are working diligently to put a stop to this crime, the business is still growing. It is our duty as nurses and student nurses to educate ourselves on this so that these children and adults are taken out of modern day slavery and back to a life worth living. Stay tuned for more details regarding our state project. Council of Schools is approaching quickly, so be ready to pack your bags for Austin. The theme this year is TNSA: Fill Your Professional Nursing Toolbox-What You Will Need. We will introduce the state project and plan for Annual Convention in San Antonio and the upcoming year. We like to hear everyone s plans for their local chapters, so please come prepared to share and have a great time! For a few quick reminders: We are currently searching for a Western Regional Director to serve on the TNSA Board of Directors. If you or someone you know has a dedicated heart and loves to grow professionally in their nursing career, please contact us before Council of Schools to get you set. Also, if you are a chapter president and will be through to Annual Convention, I need a willing volunteer who does not mind leading to serve as Chair of Council of State Presidents at Annual Convention in San Antonio. Please see or contact me or any of the TNSA Board of Directors at, or before, Council of Schools for more information. Lastly, the deadline for resolutions to be submitted is January 18, 2018 (six weeks prior to convention) so get those brains working to create the change in nursing and nursing education. If you have questions on submitting resolutions or do not know where to start, please contact myself or Paige Etheridge, our resolutions chair. I wish to leave you with some advice while you battle the struggle of nursing school: Remember that this degree, or diploma, is not for you, it is for those who are hurting, those who are sick, their families, and their friends. Work hard for the patients you are going to fight for and never, ever give up. Thank you for all that you do, Jared O Neal, President 2
3 Texas Nursing Students Association against Human Trafficking Your TNSA Board of Directors met on June 3 rd, 2017 for our first official board meeting in Austin, Texas and great topics were brought to the table for our state-wide project for this academic year. After much research, deliberation, and debate on the topics presented we are pleased to announce that our state-wide project for the academic year is: TNSA against Human Trafficking. Human trafficking is defined as organized criminal activity in which human beings are treated as possessions to be controlled and exploited. This includes domestic servitude, sex trafficking, forced labor, bonded labor, child labor and forced marriage. The oppression initiates as a person exerts control over another through threats of manipulation and violence causing the victim to fear for their well-being and unable to remove themselves from the situation. Research has identified Texas as one of the largest breeding grounds for human trafficking in the United States. Approximately 313,000 people in Texas are victims of human trafficking. Of the 313, ,000 are victims of labor trafficking, and 79,000 are children who have been subject to sex trafficking. It is estimated that 600 million dollars is being generated through labor trafficking and another 6.6 billion from child sex trafficking in Texas alone. As student nurses and future health care professionals it is imperative to be knowledgeable of the warning signs and risk associated with human trafficking. Throughout this we will provide presentations and resources presented at the Council of Schools and State Convention with the intention of expanding the awareness and knowledge of these atrocities. We will be inviting professionals to educate and inform. Our goal is this information be shared with the local chapters to facilitate a deeper understanding of the problem, and provide the toolset to recognize the signs of human trafficking. We deeply encourage collaboration within the local chapters, and to reach out to local organizations to ascertain ways we can be involved. The gesture does not have to be grand and can be something as simple as donating gently used scrubs to the battered women s shelter, or volunteering our time in some manner. These serve as a small example of what can be done, be creative in your ventures and contact your local entities and ask how you may be of assistance. You may have taken notice: We are now live with the Texas Nursing Student Association (TNSA) FB page. We encourage you to like and stay up to date with TNSA happenings. As you plan and host events related to our state-wide project we encourage you to post and update us on what you are doing. These updates are a way to share with everyone the efforts that are being undertaken to improve lives. Your pictures and ideas may be the factor that sparks ideas and ignites action from colleagues across this great state. We will also be doing a competition amongst our regions entitled Save your Change. This is where each region (north, south, east and west) will compete against one another to see who can raise the most money for the cause. Donation centers will be established at the Council of Schools and State Conventions where you will be able to drop off the donations. Your TNSA board of directors will take the final amount raised and present it to a worthy organization that deals with human trafficking efforts. Be creative in the methods for donation collections. For example, you could put on a Cream of the Crop. Students vote by placing change in the jug for the professor they want to take a pie to the face. A fundraiser with the idea that money is placed in a jar to vote for a specific professor. The professor with the most votes will take a pie to the face. Keep your eyes and ears open, more information will be coming soon as we continue to expand and roll out new ideas. If you have any questions I encourage you all to reach out to me at rramos9@patriots.uttyler.edu. My committee and I will be glade to help in any way we can. We will be overseeing this project throughout the year as your program and projects committee. Thanks for all your time and effort and we look forward to seeing what we all will do locally, and as a state. 4 Stop, Drop, and Educate Childhood obesity is a major national concern. As of 2013, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics show that 13.7% of high school students in America and 15.7% of high school students in Texas are obese ( High School YRBS, 2013). Texas students are above the national average for obesity! According to the CDC, obesity is defined as having a body mass index at or above the 95th percentile for children and teens of the same age and sex ( Overweight & Obesity, 2016). Obesity is a health issue because it can lead to illnesses such as Type 2 Diabetes and heart conditions. Texas has made efforts to raise awareness and educate the youth by implementing health education programs in elementary, middle, and junior high schools ( Health Education, 2015). The responsibility to educate the youth about health should not fall exclusively on schools. Nurses play a major role in health promotion and education because of the close relations they have with patients and the time they get to spend with them. Patient education is a privilege in nursing and it is something we can jump right into while still in nursing school! Our one-on-one opportunities to educate patients are unique. The patient has privacy to inquire openly and the nurse has the understanding to convey reliable and accurate information. In addition, the patient-nurse relationship is one of integrity and trust. Educating the youth on living a healthy lifestyle should be a priority for nurses. Younger families, friends, and patients in clinical are a few examples of people we encounter and have a chance to educate about health. Education does not have to come in strict curriculum format- it is flexible and can easily be done in daily conversation. By using the skill and opportunity we have through nursing to educate our youth, we can make an impact now, while still in nursing school. The health choices children make today turn into tomorrow s habits- it only takes a few words and a few minutes to make a difference! Shania Dauglas Vice President 4
5 The Stigma of Mental Health As future nurses it is our responsibility to provide the greatest patient care possible to each and every individual that we treat. Unfortunately, in my most recent semester of nursing school, I have become aware of an issue in nursing that hinders this care and often times is overlooked: The Stigma of Mental Illness. I was first introduced to this topic at the 2017 TNSA 69 th Annual Convention when a delegate from The University of Texas at Austin presented to the House of Delegates his resolution entitled, In Support of Increased Education of Stigma Related to Severe Mental Illness. Through this Resolution I learned that we in healthcare must be more open with our thoughts and actions when treating patients with mental illness; when we approach a patient with preset ideas of what we are going to encounter we are negatively affecting the care we are intending to provide. By raising awareness to the stigma endured by mentally ill patients, we as nursing students can begin disseminating a new outlook on mental illness to other healthcare providers and professions. Fortunately, in my final month of the spring semester I had the opportunity to perform this very action in my clinical setting. During a clinical rotation I had the opportunity to provide care for a psychiatric patient and to put my thoughts about creating awareness for the stigma of mental illness into action. When receiving report for this patient I was shocked by the manner in which the nurses were discussing the patient using words such as rude, annoying and violent. At that moment I thought back to what I had heard at the TNSA Convention and decided to approach my patient with an open mind. I entered the room and introduced myself and before beginning any examinations began to talk with the patient and build a rapport with her; this allowed me to provide care to her throughout the day without any incidents or altercations. At the end of the day I was able to discuss with a few of the nurses how I kept an open mind after hearing about her diagnosis and how it enhanced the care I provided. What I want everyone to take from this is that the stigma surrounding mental illness has a negative impact on the care we provide. We as future nurses and members of the healthcare team need to do our part in putting an end to the negative mindset that so many are guilty of having. If we do not attempt to put an end to this major issue in healthcare, we are neglecting this vulnerable patient population. ALEXANDRIA OLIVARRI Southern Regional Director 5
