2 Autumn Semester Level 4 B74AN1 Advancing Nursing Practice 1 Target students Students enrolled on the MSc/Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Nursing Description This module will consolidate students understanding of the historical and contemporary context for advanced nursing, both nationally and internationally. Students will begin the process of extending their own scope of practice by selecting and researching a project for development in their own clinical area. This process will include critically reflecting on the nursing relevance and clinical effectiveness of the proposed project, an assessment of learning needs, and planning a realistic programme to meet these needs (to be implemented in ANP II). Frameworks for learning new practice skills will be evaluated and students will maintain a portfolio documenting learning from theory, research and practice Weekly attendance at the University will be supplemented by independent study in preparation for the assignment Coursework 1 (80%) An essay of up to 3000 words. Students will identify and justify a project through which to advance their nursing knowledge and practice. Coursework 2 (20%) Portfolio containing up to 2000 words. Through the portfolio students will assess their learning needs in relation to the project and devise an appropriate training programme. Description The content of this module will centre upon the eight areas of prescribing practice outlined by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and the Department of Health on behalf of Allied Health Professions and will include: Consultation and decision making. The psychology of prescribing and influencing factors Prescribing in a team context General principles and application of pharmacology and therapeutics. Principles and methods of patient monitoring Evidence-based practice and clinical governance in relation to extended (nurses) and supplementary prescribing Legal, policy professional and ethical aspects Prescribing in the public health context. The module incorporates the following professional awards: (The title of the professional award is dictated by the awarding professional body) Nurses: independent and supplementary prescribing V300 Allied Health Professionals: the Practice certificate in Supplementary Prescribing Pharmacists: Practice certificate in Supplementary Prescribing Further Activity Detail: 156 taught hours (see summary of content), plus 72 hours practice learning. Description In the context of the cardiovascular, respiratory and ear nose and throat (ENT), gastrointestinal, endocrine and renal systems, this module will equip students with the skills to: Take and present a systematic clinical history Carry out a comprehensive physical examination Apply the findings of the history and examination to clinical decision-making The module will also equip students with the knowledge and skills to critically appraise the professional, ethical and legal responsibilities associated with expanded roles and advanced clinical practice. It examines the nature of CBT and its development as a psychological therapy, incorporating its integration within contemporary mental health practice. Theoretical learning is supplemented by skills development, occurring in classroom-based exercises and during clinical practice. The module is facilitated by a combination of lead lectures, discussion & student-led seminars. 4 B74DCL Professional Development for Clinical Leadership Credits 10 Level 4 Target students Postgraduate students registered within the School of Nursing Description This module will enable students to critically reflect on their own leadership development in relation to developments in their role and working environment. Students will begin by reflecting on leadership and theories of leadership. They will subsequently consider leadership within organisations, teams and team-working and managing change. Students will be encouraged to formulate a personal development plan in the context of a reflective portfolio and to use this to plan, monitor and evaluate their development and learning over the course of the module. The module entails supported self directed learning. Equivalent hours of study 100 hours. The module will be facilitated by a series of initial workshop/seminars. Students will be provided with a handbook detailing relevant reading and key articles and details of how to complete the reflective portfolio Subsequent workshops will be provided to help support students to prepare their assignment. Coursework 1 (100%) A reflective portfolio of up to 3000 words to identify students personal and professional development needs relating to leadership in their practice area. Professor K Cox B74EHS Evidence for Health & Social Care Target students Postgraduate students within the School of Nursing Description This module will commence with a critical review of the forms of evidence that underpin professional practice in health and social care. The ideology of evidence-based practice will be analysed and its impact on practice evaluated, including an examination of the barriers to using evidence in practice. The module will then move on to examine the following areas: the principles of critical and systematic literature review; issues in the application of clinical guidelines and protocols; techniques for evaluating services and policies the process of generating evidence through empirical research; qualitative and quantitative research paradigms and methods. Weekly attendance at the University will be supplemented by independent study in preparation for the assignment. Coursework 1 (70%) Coursework 2 (30%) Dr A Arthur 3000 word essay. 5 B74EPP Policy, Ethical and Psychosocial Perspectives in Palliative and End of Life Care Target students Students enrolled on the MSc, Postgraduate Diploma or Post Graduate Certificate in Health and Social Care (Palliative and End of Life Care) Description This module will address the relationship between outcomes of palliative and end of life care for individual patients and how these are shaped by wider constraints. It will extend students understanding of the policy and political drivers shaping care delivery nationally and internationally. It will provide a critical and international perspective on contemporary ethical debates, particularly as they relate to issues of equity of access to quality care and end of life decision making in clinical practice. It will enable students to reflect on how these wider debates relate to matters of psychosocial well being for individual patients with palliative care needs and their companions. The module will take a public health perspective as an organising framework, offering students the opportunity to critically examine the implications of population ageing and increases in long term conditions in the developed world, and the AIDS pandemic in the developing world. Students will develop a portfolio documenting learning from theory, research and practice This module is facilitated by a combination of lead lectures, discussion and student-led seminars. Weekly attendance at the University will be supplemented by independent study in preparation for the assignment. The equivalent hours of study will be 200 hours. Professor JE Seymour Ms B Chady B74HN1 Principles of Management of the Highly Dependent or Critically Ill Neonate, Infant or Child 1 Target students Postgraduate students within the School of Nursing Description This module considers: Social policy focusing on generic and that pertinent to the specialities Physiology of respiratory, cardiac and renal systems to enable examination of pathophysiology of diseases such as respiratory distress, cardiac failure and congenital abnormalities, acute renal failure Supporting interventions linked to the above such as ventilation, oxygen administration, invasive monitoring, drug therapy, ECMO Nursing management issues of caring for neonates, infants and children requiring the above interventions Psycho-social issues and impact on family in this high technological environment The role of the nurse and multidisciplinary team within these specialities There are two assessment options offered in this module This module will be eight full days delivered as one day per week over a period of eight weeks. Description This module equips students with an understanding of the incidence, prevalence and presentation of common mental health problems, and evidence-based treatment choices. Skills teaching will develop students core common factors competences of active listening, engagement, alliance building, patient-centred information gathering, information giving and shared decision making. This module is facilitated by a combination of lead lectures, discussion, skills practice and student-led seminars. Description This module equips students with an understanding of the evidence-based low-intensity psychological treatments and regularly used pharmacological treatments of common mental health problems. Skills teaching will develop students general and disorder defined specific factors competencies in the delivery of CBT-based low-intensity treatment and in the support of medication concordance. This module is facilitated by a combination of lead lectures, discussion, skills practice and student-led seminars. Description This module will develop students understanding of the historical and contemporary context for palliative and end of life care practice. Students will begin the process of extending their own scope of practice by selecting and researching a subject relevant in their own practice area. The module will explore issues around principles and concepts of palliative and end of life care, including symptom management, communication issues, ethical debates and psychosocial needs in a range of life limiting and long term conditions. This module will be mostly Web CT based, and will be supplemented by independent study in preparation for the assignment. Students will attend the University to prepare for the use of Web CT, for group seminars and individual tutorials. Three group tutorials will be held focussing on the critical and analytical skills needed to complete the assignment. 9 B74PRP Professional Research Practice Target students Students registered on the Doctor of Health Science programme Description This module is the final taught module within the DHSci programme and aims to consolidate students learning from earlier modules. The research process will be revisited and revised, enabling students to take stock of their progress to date and to prepare for the data collection phase of their research projects. Module activities will be negotiated with the individual students taking the module. Students will be provided with a menu of research lectures. Assignment (50%) Research proposal of up to 2,500 words Presentation 1 (50%) 20 minute oral presentation in which the student presents the research proposal orally to staff and colleagues, followed by a 20 minute viva voce examination with two internal assessors Dr L A East B74RC1 Changing the Experience of Mental Health Problems Target students Postgraduate Students Description This module examines contemporary mental health policy (national and international) on recovery and the contested nature of the concept of recovery through definitions and interpretations provided in the accounts of people with experience of mental health problems. This develops into a study of the implications of this approach for people who themselves face the challenge of their own recovery, and for practitioners who work alongside them, and includes the following: Ways of taking/giving back control (of symptoms, of treatment and of life more generally); Ways of assessing risk or negotiating safety plans within a Recovery framework; Ways of inspiring hope, hopeful relationships and hopeful environments of care. This module is facilitated by a combination of lead lectures, discussion and student-led seminars. Fortnightly attendance will be supplemented by independent study in preparation for the following week s lectures and for the assignment. Target students Postgraduate Students Description This module traces the history of service user involvement from early attempts at empowerment to current partnership and user led initiatives and the personalisation agenda (including the organisation, delivery and use of direct payments). It examines critically the beliefs, assumptions and agendas underpinning partnership working at all levels (from commissioning and executive board level to personal care planning) and explore the development and role of user led services and peer support working (both within statutory services and in the third sector). This module is facilitated by a combination of lead lectures, discussion and student-led seminars. Description This module provides an overview of the issues involved in research design and practice. Research is considered within its social and political context, and questions of what research is for and how it can be assessed are considered. The formulation of a researchable question/hypothesis and translating it into an appropriate and practicable research design is explored. Various approaches to research are introduced and the process of conducting a project is examined. Series of 8 x 2 hrs lectures, seminars and tutorial discussion groups. 24 hrs of self-directed study, 25 hrs of assignment preparation. In the module we explore the concepts that underpin educational and social research including empiricism, rationalism, interpretivism and realism and their relation to objectivity, causation and validity. The module covers the role of values in social enquiry, and helps students to explore the relevance of these issues for their own research. 10 x 3 hr classes involving a lead lecture followed by a tutorial. Assignment (100%) B74SSD Mr A Morgan 3000 word essay Philosophy of Research Target students Description The module provides a general introduction to the philosophy of social science together with the application of these ideas through key debates. The debates include the structure/agency dichotomy, ideological influences, and feminist methodologies, finishing with a question and answer panel session at the last meeting. The module is also available as a 10 credit module under B7DSSC, with similar module content but reduced coursework. 10 x 3 hr classes involving a lead lecture followed by a tutorial. 11 B74WSM Leading and Managing at Work Credits 40 Level 4 Target students Individuals working in health and social care with leadership responsibilities. Description The approach adopted in this module will be one of workplace led and student-directed learning. The module content and activities will be determined by the specific learning needs of the individual student and shaped by their occupational situation and organisational context. The work will be guided by an action plan drawn up in agreement with the academic and clinical supervisor and in consideration of the student s employing body. The aim is to tackle an area of concern identified by the organisation and will take the form of a service improvement project, in which the student plays a lead role. This work will be carried out over a period of one academic year (nine months). The activities will be staged and reflect the sequence of planning, implementation and review and be agreed with the local supervisors. The material documenting progress will be presented to colleagues and peers, and an overview of the whole project collated in a structured portfolio. Description This module will encourage midwives to explore the contextual nature of midwifery management, supervision and leadership in maternity care environments. The management of change and innovation will be critically analysed to facilitate students' development as effective change agents. The social, political, epidemiological and economic factors will be debated in relation to their impact on the management of maternity services. Students will begin by considering the history of clinical research and current organisational issues. This will be followed by examining research designs associated with clinical research for example, randomised controlled trials as well as complex intervention designs. Issues of research governance, ethical and legal aspects of clinical research will be considered alongside the role and responsibilities of healthcare researchers. Students will also examine the evidence base underpinning clinical trial management relating to recruitment, retention, attrition and trial closure. Description This module will promote an understanding of the process of conducting a comprehensive systematic review of evidence in order to inform the conduct of health care practice. The module will enable students to: critically discuss the role of systematic review within the context of evidence translation, transfer, utilisation and generation and the evidence based health care movement; explore the use of systematic reviews to explore issues relating to the appropriateness, meaningfulness, feasibility, effectiveness and costs of health care interventions; frame an appropriate review question and develop a review protocol relevant to their own area of practice; develop approaches to design an appropriate search strategy critically explore the processes of assessment of methodological quality, data extraction and data synthesis for a range of health related research; critically discuss the available frameworks for the systematic review of quantitative and qualitative research and the process of meta analysis and meta synthesis; critically discuss the use of a range of evidence, including narrative opinion and text in the process of systematic review. Description This module will introduce students to the main approaches and methods available for the evaluation of health and social care policy and practice. The module will prepare students to assess the effectiveness of the interventions they implement, the programmes and services they deliver and the policies they plan or seek to enact using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Students will be taught frameworks to support their decision-making concerning the appropriate criteria by which to measure effectiveness in different situations. Students will be able to distinguish between interventions, services and policies that aim for the achievement of goals, and outcomes and interventions that are goal free. Students will therefore be equipped to evaluate structures, processes and outcomes and - more importantly - be able to identify where best to evaluate structures, processes or outcomes. The module will prepare students to identify and demonstrate the benefit of interventions to individual users, organisations or whole populations. This module will be delivered online using Web CT.
