1 CENTRAL PLAINS EXPO XXXV Facing the Challenges An educational conference/vendor exhibit at the HYATT REGENCY WICHITA, KANSAS October 4 and October 5, Four healthcare associations have formed an organization called the Central Plains Expo (CPE). CPE is made up of representatives from the Association for Professionals in Infection Control & Epidemiology (APIC) Wichita Chapter; Kansas Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management (KAHRMM); Kansas Healthcare Environmental Services and Laundry Association (KHELSA) and Kansas Society for Healthcare Central Service Professionals (KSHCSP). The CPE Board presents an annual educational conference and vendor fair that provides a forum for learning and networking through sessions, exhibits and meetings. The conference is geared towards staff and management in infection control, environmental services, sterile processing and material management. This year s theme highlights the challenges we face in our professions.

Session D: APIC Clinical Evidence and Project Performance Ruth Carrico, PhD, MSN, APRN, FNP C, FSHEA, CIC Define guiding principles for product use and selection as viewed from the perspective of industry, users and evaluators. Building upon the perspectives, describe the alignment between existing practice, operability, and clinical evidence as part of purchase decision making. Introduce a blueprint that can be used in evaluating product use and selection based upon available science, need, and safety. Session H: APIC Antibiotic Stewardship in Veterinary Medicine and Production Animal Agriculture Mike Apley, DVM, PhD, DACVCP Understand major categories of Antimicrobial use, in all facets of veterinary medicine (including production and animal agriculture). Review the latest recommendations from Industry Standards and Professional Societies for verification testing. Understand the role of cleaning monitors to verify complete manual cleaning of endoscopes in the prevention of hospital required infections Storage and Surveillance Endoscopes Chervon Rajo Discuss why there are concerns about bacterial growth inside endoscopes and what the implications are of those bacteria being present. Outline the current guidelines on microbial culturing and surveillance of flexible endoscopes. Review storage National Standards, Guidelines and best practices. Discuss how to perform a risk assessment to establish a length of storage for reprocessed endoscopes. Discuss common situations that create interpretation/communication challenges between the SPD and surgery departments. Identify various interpretations of specific ANSI/AAMI 5779 and AORN standards and recommended practices related to instrument reprocessing as well as their intended meaning. Design a collaborative approach to implementing industry standards and recommended practices between the SPD and OR.

Session S: KAHRMM Preanalytical variables: Don t Forget Urine & The Patient Experience Curtis Rice The presentation covers the significance of urine testing, review of current practices, guidelines/regulations, need for preservatives, trends in antimicrobial resistance and CAUTI reduction, impact of contamination, impact of using a closed system, and best practices. Session T: KHELSA Great Leadership with Effective Management Cole Gilliland Explain the difference between a Good Leader and being a Good Manager. Provide tools to use for both leading and managing your staff, your schedule, your budget and change. Session U: APIC Bending IP rules without breaking our principles and A day in the life of an IP Prioritizing our resources. Jim Gauthier, MLT, CIC List the difference between legisted regulations, guidelines, and best practices. List 2 criteria to differentiate prioritizing actions on busy days. Utilize the Chain of Transmission to answer questions. Give examples of vertical vs. horizon infection prevention.
