Welcome to King Edward VII s Hospital Sister Agnes With a history reaching back more than a century, King EdwardVII s Hospital Sister Agnes is dedicated to delivering the highest standards of medical care supported by first class staff and hand picked consultants using state-of- the-art medical facilities. Together with an outstanding commitment to patient care this has allowed us to maintain our position as London s foremost private hospital. The Hospital is a registered charity governed by a Royal Charter. Patron: Her Majesty the Queen President: HRH The Duke of Kent 1
About Us With continual investments in medical and surgical equipment, we aim to remain at the forefront of technology so that our patients are cared for in the best surroundings. The Hospital employs the highest calibre of nursing staff who have years of experience in delivering frontline healthcare. Our nurse to patient ratios are outstanding to ensure excellent personalised care. The Hospital offers 57 en-suite air-conditioned rooms over three wards including short and long stay wards. A full range of surgical procedures is available supported by a four-bed Critical Care Unit. Our Heritage King Edward VII s Hospital for Offi cers was established in 1899 by two sisters, Agnes and Fanny Keyser, who turned their home at 17 Grosvenor Crescent into a hospital for sick and wounded Offi cers returning from the Boer War. H.M. King Edward VII became the Hospital s fi rst patron. We are proud of our zero rate of hospital acquired MRSA and C.diffi cile infections. We have also been awarded the highly prized Laing & Buisson Healthcare Award for Hotel Services and the FSA fi ve stars Scores On The Doors award for the highest food standard hygiene accreditation. We have retained our strong and long standing links with Her Majesty s Armed Forces and are proud to provide charitable benefi ts for the military community through our subsidy and grant programmes. Conveniently located in the heart of London s West End, we aim to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible. Queen Mary and Matron Saxby With the encouragement of His Majesty King Edward VII, and together with Agnes Keyser s enthusiasm, immense support was received from individuals who later became known as Friends. Over 3,000 Friends pledge their support to the Hospital to this day. Sister Agnes and her staff continued to care for Offi cers in peacetime. She was renowned for her devoted service to the Hospital, her kindness, tactful, fi rm, effective and inherently caring manner. The Hospital moved to its present site on Beaumont Street in 1948 when it was offi cially opened by Her Majesty Queen Mary. Private, En-suite room Hospital Library In 2000 the Hospital changed its title to King Edward VII s Hospital Sister Agnes and, in accordance with its charitable aim, the fi nancial benefi ts to which Offi cer patients had been entitled were unconditionally extended to all ranks of serving and ex- Service personnel and their spouses, ex-spouses, widows and widowers. Today this private independent, acute Hospital, registered with the Care Quality Commission and recognised by Investors in People, offers the highest standards of medical excellence. It combines the most modern facilities with impeccable standards of care from which so many patients and their families have benefi ted over the years. Our services are now available to all, with or without military connections. 2
Medical Services The Hospital offers a comprehensive range of surgical and medical care, ranging from day cases to complex procedures, including: Abdominal / Colorectal surgery Bariatric surgery Breast surgery Dental surgery ENT surgery General surgery Gynaecology Hand surgery Maxillofacial surgery Ophthalmology Orthopaedic surgery Pain Management Plastic / Cosmetic surgery Urology Vascular surgery Surgery at the Hospital is performed by consultants who are recognised leaders in their field of expertise, so you can be confi dent that you are receiving the highest level of surgical care. In addition, the Hospital has a recently refurbished 24-hour Critical Care Unit offering dedicated, continuous and specialist care. The Unit is staffed by the Hospital s fully qualified and experienced Intensive Care Nurses. Patients in the Unit are under the care of consultants in Intensive Care Medicine supported by Intensive Care Fellows. The unit was designed by our team of clinical and development experts to ensure optimum hygiene and effi cient space layout. This, coupled with the latest technology, means the Hospital can care for the most seriously ill medical and surgical patients. The Hospital offers three state-of-the-art operating theatres. Two of the theatres are equipped with laminar airflow technology which gives extra protection against the risk of airborne contamination and surgical site infections - required for particular types of surgery. The Consultant List represents a unique feature of this Hospital. Because consultants are individually selected for admission onto the Staff, the Hospital is able to maintain the highest standards in a wide range of acute and non-acute specialties. 3
Hospital Services The Hospital offers a full range of services including: Consulting Rooms Diagnostic Imaging X-Ray / MRI / CT scanning Endoscopy Occupational Therapy Pathology Pharmacy Physiotherapy & Hydrotherapy More details of some of the services offered can be found below: Physiotherapy The Hospital has an experienced team of Senior Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists who work in modern, safe, fully equipped facilities. Therapy is used extensively to relieve pain and optimise function and to ensure the safe return to home life, work, sport and leisure activities. Conditions and illnesses which therapy can help to treat include post operative rehabilitation, arthritis, fi bromyalgia, sports and soft tissue injuries and back & neck pain. Inpatients and outpatients undergo an initial consultation which involves a full assessment before a rehabilitation treatment programme is established. Endoscopy The Hospital has a dedicated Endoscopy Unit available to both inpatients and outpatients. With the latest technologically advanced range of endoscopes, ancillary equipment and video systems, we are able to obtain excellent, high quality images. The Unit incorporates a procedure room, recovery and changing areas. The Unit also has state-of-the-art decontamination facilities to ensure thorough and effective cleaning of all equipment. Our endoscopy team consists of accredited consultants working in conjunction with dedicated specialist nurses. We are fully equipped to perform both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as: Colonoscopy Bronchoscopy ERCP Flexible cystoscopy Flexible sigmoidoscopy Gastroscopy Hysteroscopy With the exception of ERCP, the majority of these procedures can be carried out on an outpatient basis. Hydrotherapy King Edward VII s Hospital is one of only three hospitals in London to have a dedicated hydrotherapy pool. The pool is heated to 35 degrees Celsius, providing a warm and buoyant environment in which to exercise. Flotation equipment is also used to enhance and progress a treatment programme. Oneto-one or group sessions in the pool are available with a fully qualified physiotherapist, who will provide individual feedback on exercise programmes. Imaging The Imaging Department at King Edward VII s Hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic services. We are continually investing in state-of-the-art medical equipment to provide the highest quality of operational and technical services to our patients and referrers. We use a range of equipment and advanced technology to produce high quality images and deliver precise outcomes for patients and doctors. Comprehensive modalities include: Cardiac Investigations Computer Tomography (128 Multi Slice CT) Fluoroscopy General X-ray Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Mammography (Digital Micro Dose) Ultrasound 4
Consulting Rooms King Edward VII s Hospital outpatients consulting facilities consist of five air-conditioned suites which occupy the ground and first floor at Emmanuel Kaye House, 37A Devonshire Street, adjacent to the main hospital. Consultants working at this site are supported by the Hospital s experienced registered Nurses and other clinical and administrative staff. The location of the Consulting Rooms allows immediate and direct access to services such as Diagnostic Imaging, Physiotherapy and Pharmacy at the time of consultation, which reduces the need for secondary visits. A dressing and suture removal service is also offered and blood samples may be taken on site. Emmanuel Kaye House 37A Devonshire Street London W1G 6QA Tel E3294 KE7-updated-2 2.indd 8 15/02/ :21
Infection Prevention & Control Minimising the risk of hospital acquired infections is of paramount importance to our Hospital. We have strict guidelines in place for patient screening and surveillance, ongoing staff training in hospital hygiene as well as the use of advanced cleaning techniques. The Hospital is supported by the Infection Control Team who ensure we maintain these high standards continuously. The Hospital fully complies with National Guidelines and Protocols issued by the Department of Health and the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence for the prevention and control of infection. Hand washing and sanitising facilities are widely available throughout the Hospital. It is standard policy at the Hospital to screen all patients for MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) on admission. ion. Patients found to be carrying MRSA have a personalised sed treatment plan devised and appropriate antimicrobial agents administered by the Infection Control Team consisting of a specially trained nurse and consultant microbiologists. The Hospital is committed to high quality and standards which assist in the maintenance of low infection rates. We are proud of our zero rate cross-contamination / infection of MRSA and C.diffi cile. Factors that contribute to our high quality record include:.... Individual rooms with private en-suite facilities for patients before and after any treatment or operation, unless the specialist resources of high dependency or intensive care are necessary. High nurse to patient ratios, increasing the time available for individual attention and ensuring the highest quality of care and hygiene. In-house cleaning staff who work to high specifi cations of hygiene and cleanliness, available 24 hours every day to respond to any need that may arise. A comprehensive room cleaning regime between the discharge of one patient and the admission of the next. 6
Admission & Payments Admissions Patients are admitted only under the care of one of the consultants or General Practitioners on the Hospital s Medical and Surgical Staff List. Not all patients are eligible for admission, including those under 18. Please contact the Hospital s Admissions Team on for more information. 7
Payments Additional Payments. There are a number of ways to come into the Hospital if you are an inpatient or day case; those with health insurance, those guaranteed by a third party, and those who are self paying. Each option is explained here: Insured If insured, it is essential to receive confi rmation prior to admission from your insurance company that your level of cover is adequate to meet the costs of your stay. The Hospital has direct settlement arrangements for inpatient treatment with most UK medical insurance companies for pre-authorised admissions. However, patients are reminded that they are responsible for their Hospital account, if the Insurer does not pay for all or part of their treatment. If your Insurance company provides a claim form, you must bring it with you. The form must be completed and signed by your consultant (or in some cases GP) who will give details of your treatment. Without the completed claim form your Insurance company will not make payment. The Hospital will invoice the medical insurance company directly on your behalf, but in the event that cover is not authorised, settlement of the account remains your ultimate responsibility. If you are not covered by a UK-based medical insurer you should check your policy prior to treatment, as you will be required initially to pay your account personally and then claim back from your insurer. Personal Account This will cover non-medical expenses incurred during your stay (for example newspapers) plus the cost of any take home medication. Professional Fees Consultants fees are a matter of personal arrangement between patient and the respective specialists who will forward their account to the patient or the insurance company directly. Payment Methods Payment can be made by cash, cheque, most debit and credit cards including: Switch, Maestro, Solo, Visa MasterCard and Amex.. Guaranteed by a Third Party A written letter of guarantee is required for the whole stay prior to arrival from, for example, an embassy or company.. Uninsured Patients Inpatients and Day Case patients paying for their own treatment are requested to pay for their stay on admission.. Outpatients Outpatient are requested to settle their account on the day of treatment and if insured, claim back from their medical insurance company. 8
Patient s Charter We have set out below the Patient s Rights and the standards of service the patient can expect to receive at King Edward VII s Hospital. Access to Services Patients have the right to receive health care on the basis of their clinical need, be referred to a consultant acceptable to the patient by their GP and to be referred for a second opinion if the patient and the GP agree this is desirable. The patient can expect the Hospital to make it as easy as possible for everyone to use its services, including the elderly and those with physical or mental disabilities. Personal Considerations and Respect Staff will address the patient by their full title unless the patient expresses another preference, which the staff will respect. Patients can expect all staff they meet face to face to wear name badges, which incorporate their full name and position. Patients can expect the Hospital to respect privacy, dignity and religious and cultural beliefs at all times and in all areas (e.g. meals to suit dietary and religious needs). Patients can expect to have a chaperone present during any examination, procedure or treatment irrespective of organisational constraints or settings in which this is carried out. Patients can, if they wish, discuss health related matters with a member of staff of the same sex. Providing information Patients have the right to: Have any proposed treatment, including any risks involved in that treatment and any alternative course of treatment clearly explained prior to consent. Have access to their health records in accordance with the Access to Health Records Act 1990 and the Hospital s Medical Records policy. This policy states that a patient or their representative can gain access to their Health Records by making a formal request in writing. The request must include the patient s consent and signature agreeing to the release of such information, should be addressed to the Medical Records Coordinator and will incur an administration charge. All personnel working at King Edward VII s Hospital are under both contractual and legal obligations to keep all patient information and records confi dential. Have any complaint about the Hospital s services, clinical or non-clinical, investigated and receive a prompt explanation following investigation. If appropriate, only participate in medical research if they have discussed this with their consultant and given valid consent. 9
Our Charitable Aims & Supporting our Hospital King Edward VII s Hospital is a Registered Charity governed by Royal Charter. We are committed to ensuring that as many Serving and ex-service men and women as possible can receive swift access to an exceptional standard of healthcare with little or no cost to themselves. We also provide healthcare for ex-service personnel who may otherwise endure long waiting lists. We ensure the same level of assistance for the spouses, ex-spouses, widows and widowers of all those who have served. For more information on our subsidies and grants, please contact the Hospital on Become a Friend The spirit of philanthropy forms a key part of our history. We keep our Friends updated on the Hospital s work through priority mailing of our newsletter and invitations to exclusive events, for example our Annual Champagne Reception attended by our President, HRH The Duke of Kent. As a small sign of our appreciation, Friends who are admitted to the Hospital receive a welcome gift and free newspaper for the duration of their stay. If you would like more information on becoming a Friend of the Hospital please contact our Fundraising Team on Friends Magazine 10
