2 Creating healthier communities In 2006, St. Luke s celebrated 125 years of growth and service to our region. One part of our story that hasn t changed over the years is our commitment to reach out to the communities we serve. Providing health care to our growing region is a responsibility St. Luke s has always embraced in ways that go beyond the hospital and the clinics. And it is a responsibility that has evolved as our communities have evolved. We do that by answering the question, how can we improve the heath care experiences of those we serve? What can we do to improve their health, safety and wellness? St. Luke s shall provide quality health care. The patient comes first. Quality is our goal. Service is our reason for being here. People make it happen. Everyone is treated with respect. Our answers to these questions take our staff and their expertise out into the region through many programs, some of them highlighted in this annual report. We have safety programs, such as our child car seat safety clinics and the Don t Have a Life Wreck program that encourages teens to drive safely. We offer free community programs, such as school-based nutrition education classes and seminars to help seniors learn how to prevent often-devastating falls. We are also committed to providing our patients with safety-based, comprehensive and compassionate care. To that end, in 2006 we extended internal programs to continue to ensure medication safety, infection control and employee safety training. Creating healthier communities is a part of our ever-expanding commitment to be more than a hospital. A commitment we consistently provide in ways that follow our deeply held mission The Patient. Above All Else. Debra Messer Board Chair John Strange President and CEO

3 Community Safety Keeping our community safe is a responsibility St. Luke s believes reaches beyond the walls of our hospital and clinics. And, we believe it s a responsibility that begins with our youngest citizens. St. Luke s child car seat safety program, run in partnership with the Duluth Fire Department and television station WDIO, is intended to keep the most vulnerable people in any vehicle safe. Parents are bombarded with information regarding car seats, says Teresa Delp, RN, injury prevention coordinator at St. Luke s. But how to use them can be very confusing. That s why we want to give parents a convenient way to learn how to keep their children as safe as possible while riding in a vehicle. The idea behind the program began with the Duluth Fire Department and emergency first responders. More often than not, these professionals were seeing children injured or killed in motor vehicle crashes either because they were not properly restrained in their car seat or the seat itself was not properly installed. Realizing the need for better education, St. Luke s became a co-developer of car seat clinics. Car seats can be so confusing. I m glad there s someone who can tell me how to install it in my car and help keep my baby safe. Suzanne Sutherland The monthly clinics are held at different fire stations in the Duluth area. The free car seat inspection lasts about 20 minutes. The inspection provides hands-on information to help parents understand how to install and properly use child restraint systems and seat belts. The professionals who evaluate the restraints have gone through an intensive four-day program developed by the We ve seen significant vehicle crashes where the child is so well protected by a properly used and installed seat that he or she has only minor injuries. Marnie Grondahl Deputy Fire Marshal Duluth Fire Department National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and become certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians when they successfully complete the program. We find that 9 out of 10 car seats are misused either by being improperly installed or having a child improperly restrained in it, Delp says. If we discover that a car seat is defective or that there is a recall on it, we immediately provide the parent with a new car seat. We don t allow them to leave without a new one. We ask for a monetary donation if they are able, but our main goal is to make sure that all children ride safely. She estimates that in 2006 alone, over 330 car seats were inspected at car seat clinics. Don t Have a Life Wreck Program This car safety program, also sponsored by St. Luke s, is aimed at teenagers. Don t Have a Life Wreck is intended to help teens understand the importance of developing safe driving habits before they even get behind the wheel. The number one cause of death in teenagers is motor vehicle crashes, Delp says. New teen drivers often have more confidence driving than they should given their lack of experience. In addition, they may be unable to weigh the consequences of high-risk behaviors due to their stage of brain development. The program is often presented in health class and consists of videos, presentations and discussions to help these new and soon-to-be drivers understand the impact that speeding, fatigue, distracted driving and underage drinking can have on their driving. One video that stimulates a lot of class discussion, according to Delp, demonstrates what happens during a crash to a human body that is not wearing a seat belt. They are fascinated with the slow-motion action on the video and shocked when they see how the person is injured, she says. We hope Don t Have a Life Wreck will help teens make good decisions when they are behind the wheel. We find that 9 out of 10 car seats are misused either by being improperly installed or having a child improperly restrained in it. Teresa Delp, RN Injury Prevention Coordinator St. Luke s

4 Community Heart Caring for people takes on many forms at St. Luke s. Expert medical care, provided in a compassionate and caring manner, is a hallmark of St. Luke s and our eight family medicine clinics and 23 specialty clinics. And each of our 2,000+ employees takes to heart the impact they have on people every day. It is with this shared, heartfelt commitment that employees reach out beyond St. Luke s to bring their particular expertise to the region. Our staff routinely shares their knowledge through community education programs and classes and speaking engagements designed to improve the health and safety of the region. We held or participated in over 200 events in 2006, says Linda Basara, St. Luke s director of education. Our involvement includes sponsoring school-based health information opportunities, providing speakers to community groups, and offering advanced training to medical professionals. Organella One such school-based offering is Organella, a program developed to help children understand and appreciate how their bodies work and how to take care of them. Organella is a giant rag doll that can be opened up to reveal where the heart, lungs and other body organs reside. A pediatric registered nurse visits child care centers, preschools and early development centers with Organella. The children love the program and it gives them an early understanding of how important it is to develop healthy habits, Basara says. Fall Prevention for Older Adults: A Step in the Right Direction As a designated Level II Regional Trauma Center, St. Luke s is committed to educating people on ways to protect themselves and their families from injury. One of the major reasons for emergency department visits is people falling and injuring themselves. Fall Prevention for Older Adults, aimed specifically at seniors, is one way St. Luke s is addressing the cause of sometimes life-altering injuries. The program was developed by the Community Coalition for Fall Prevention, a joint effort of many organizations including St. Luke s, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), St. Mary s Hospital of Superior, St. Mary s Duluth Clinic, the Aging Resource Center of Douglas County, University of Wisconsin- Superior Center for Continuing Education/Extension, the YMCA and the Community Options Program. St. Luke s physical therapists provide this 30-minute program to senior citizen centers, church groups and other organizations serving the elderly population. The intent is to educate seniors and their families on ways to prevent falls in the home. Some people think that falls are an automatic part of aging. They are not, says Lora Lockett, physical therapist at St. Luke s. There are steps you can take to prevent them from happening. Participants of the fall prevention program learn how to adjust their daily lives to reduce their risk for falls. And if they do fall, they learn how to safely get up. But prevention is key, so in addition to a home safety checklist, participants are given four simple exercises they can do to help prevent falls. There is even a riskscreening test. The screening involves 10 questions and a brief walking test. It takes about five minutes and can determine if the participant is at risk for falling. The person is then given recommendations based on the test results. I have probably done about 30 presentations over the past four years, Lockett says. Most are in Duluth, but I have gone to Silver Bay, Beaver Bay, Lake Nebagamon and the Senior Expo. Group size varies from a handful to as many as 100 participants. Falls are not an automatic part of aging. They are often preventable. We teach people how to avoid falls so they can avoid being injured. Lora Lockett Physical Therapist, St. Luke s My mother is 92 years old, but I learned how to take precautions for her that also make sense for me. You re never too young to think about being safe. 5 Community Food Three square meals a day is common for many of us. But for some in our communities, the prospect of even one meal a day is never a given. St. Luke s is proud to contribute to the health and well-being of all people in our community through food donation programs. There is really only one reason St. Luke s believes in donating food because it is the right thing to do, says Mark Branovan, director of hospitality services at St. Luke s. Branovan sits on the board of directors of the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, a member of America s Second Harvest The Nation s Food Bank Network, which coordinates a national food-rescue program. St. Luke s was the first in our area to sign up for the program, Branovan says. The food-rescue program connects organizations, such as St. Luke s, that produce mass quantities of food with meal programs for the poor and disadvantaged. At St. Luke s we have a pretty good idea of the number of patients we will serve every day and how many people will eat in the cafeteria, Branovan says. He estimates that on average St. Luke s prepares 400 patient meals a day and serves about 1,800 daily in the hospital cafeteria. Still, to estimate how much food we need is somewhat challenging, he says. If we have a margin of error of even 10 percent, that could mean we are over or under what could feed 180 people in the cafeteria. That s a lot of food to throw away if we can t use it. Kitchen staff at St. Luke s are ServSafe Certified Safe Food Handlers, which means they are trained to recognize what food is appropriate for donation and how to package it We re here to help people. Being able to share our food with people in the community who need it is just part of who we are at St. Luke s. Scott Franzen Food Service Attendant St. Luke s to ensure safety. Before the food-rescue program, over-produced perishable food would be sent to the compost pile. Now it goes to those in our community who need it. The food-rescue truck visits sites in the Twin Ports such as hospitals, universities, schools, caterers and restaurants to pick up prepared and perishable food. The truck visits St. Luke s three mornings a week. The driver of the truck is also ServSafe certified. Once the pickups are complete, the driver visits meal distribution sites. The agency representative then shops the truck to see what is available that day. There are about 11 agencies on board to receive rescued food, says Shaye Moris, Executive Director of the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank. Food rescue serves about 213,000 meals a year throughout the region. One of the receiving agencies is Duluth s largest soup kitchen. The Damiano Center Soup Kitchen serves free meals to anyone in need, with no questions asked. The program serves about 250 to 350 people at every meal. Other recipient agencies include Union Gospel Mission, Duluth Salvation Army, Superior Salvation Army, Bethany Crisis Shelter, CHUM Drop-In Center and Food Shelf, Safe Haven, Life House, and the Boys and Girls Club of Duluth. St. Luke s food donation commitment goes beyond food rescue. The hospital sponsors regular employee food drives for area food shelves as well as participating in the community fund-raiser Empty Bowl. It is a firm belief around here that we have a responsibility to care for people, Branovan says. Even those who may not even enter our doors. The food-rescue program helps us serve our clients more food choices and better nutritional options. And often it s food selections we might otherwise not be able to afford. 6 2006 social accountability Community outreach In 2006, St. Luke s employees shared their extensive knowledge with our region in many ways and through a variety of opportunities. Our employees assumed leadership positions in many local, regional and national organizations that impact the health of our region and the future of health care. St. Luke s continued to offer support groups for patients, families and friends struggling with cancer, heart disease and other medical conditions. In 2006, St. Luke s was the medical sponsor of the Duluth Air Show and provided on-site medical services to participants and visitors. St. Luke s proudly provided its financial support of the Lake Superior Community Health Center, whose work helps ensure that all community members have access particularly financial access to primary health care. Health care professionals at St. Luke s continued to play key roles in statewide preparedness planning for major health events, such as a flu pandemic. Employees continued to volunteer their time to the Meals on Wheels program, which delivers nutritionally sound meals to people who are unable to prepare their own. St. Luke s regularly sponsors and participates in health fairs that bring health education and information to local communities. For example, in 2006, staff presented breast cancer education and used a model of a breast to help women understand what a breast lump can feel like. At other health fairs, staff offered demonstrations and provided health screenings, including blood pressure checks, cholesterol tests and detection of osteoporosis. For the last eight years, St. Luke s has co-sponsored monthly child car seat clinics, offered at no charge. Clinics are held in partnership with the Duluth Fire Department and WDIO-TV. Professional training Developing and providing health education is integral to the mission of St. Luke s. In 2006, a variety of opportunities provided community access to our expert staff. St. Luke s has many employees who are trained and certified to provide continuing education on many topics to physicians, health care professionals and EMS providers. In 2006, Luke s One Air Medical Transport provided training to local emergency medical personnel and first responders on helicopter landing protocols and other safety issues. To extend the leadership role St. Luke s takes in providing advanced cardiac care to the community, our staff provided local cardiac care professionals with basic life support and advanced cardiac life support training. In celebration of St. Luke s 125th anniversary, several local EMS professionals were provided with vouchers to be used at their discretion toward professional development opportunities or the purchase of new equipment. A very active Speakers Bureau continued to provide speakers to local civic, social and community groups. Topics in 2006 included heart health, diabetes, nutrition, depression and cancer, to name only a few. In 2006, St. Luke s held monthly and quarterly community education classes and seminars, often at no charge. Topics included health care directives, childbirth classes, diabetes care, preparing siblings for a new baby, first aid and CPR, and babysitter preparedness classes. St. Luke s continued to offer scholarships to individuals actively pursuing or interested in pursuing health-related careers. Scholarships provided support for people in family practice medicine, nursing and other health professions at local universities, colleges and vocational schools. School-based initiatives Community education St. Luke s sponsors or participates in many activities through local schools. In 2006, St. Luke s provided financial donations toward chemical-free high school-based graduation parties across the region. During each school term in 2006, St. Luke s presented school-based safety initiatives such as the TraumaRoo safety program for children and the Think First safety awareness program for teens. St. Luke s continued to be a source for in-class speakers such as registered dietitians, physicians and other health professionals, who presented information on a variety of health, wellness and fitness topics.
