2016 Fall Nursing Student SLO Assessment Survey Q3 - What did you like about this program? Everything! The instructors are down to earth, understanding, caring, and all around wonderful individuals. I like how cheap and affordable the program is. I like that the students can take classes during the summer even if they are not full time and only want to take one or two classes. I like the ambassador program I really think it brings students together. I like that during skills class that we are offered to take home some of the materials to practice our skills. I like that Western has a Student Nurses association and that students have the opportunity to experience nursing through the leadership role. I love all the resource each instructor offered in addition to the content presented in lecture as well as in our books. I Love the Nursing Program here at Western and would recommend it to everyone (those willing to put in long hours and hard work). What I like about this program is the opportunities that were available for me such as; working in different health care facilities along with different departments. The nursing program at WTC has given me a chance to prove myself how strong of a individual person I am and how I establish some strengths during my journey. The availability of classes in different campus I thought that this program offered a lot of hands on experience. As I am preparing to graduate and practice as a nurse, I feel prepared to use the skills I have learned throughout the program. I thought that most of the instructors were outstanding and did a great job of helping the students succeed and really grasp the information. I enjoyed the clinical experience the most. Hands on experience was a highlight of the program. I liked all of the clinical experiences we are offered. I think the community clinical is very beneficial to our learning. Seeing all of the different roles nurses can have other than working on a medical surgical unit is nice. I also liked how welcoming and caring the faculty is here. They take the time to get to know each student. I think the smaller class sizes help with this. From day 1 I could tell that the faculty cared about what they were teaching and truly wanted us to succeed. I liked how this program is focused on building our nursing skills. Looking back, I liked how we started right into the nursing process worksheets and DAT sheets. At first, I thought these were so time consuming and difficult, but by third semester, the nursing care plans came to me almost like second nature. I was able to recall three part NANDA's, interventions, assessments and rationals without looking at anything and directly apply them to my patients. I liked the option of having in-class or online classes. I also liked how the instructors were available when I needed them. I don't think there was a time that I felt that they were not there for me. I appreciated the instructors that made powerpoints for us as this helped to narrow down the readings. I liked that we were able to take some classes online and that there was an opportunity to take classes over the summer. I liked that the class sizes were smaller and we had a lot of hands on experiences starting in the first semester. I liked that everything that was expected of you was completely laid out. The staff are very experienced and knowledgeable about the content that they lecture on. I like that classes are offered in trimesters. I liked the pace of this program.

What I liked about this program would have to be the instructors. So many wonderful instructors who push to make you a better student which will make you a better nurse. Also, the instructors are understanding of things that pop up. If it is within the policy of WTC they definitely work with you. I like that the instructors were very knowledgeable and there for you to help learn and grow. I also liked the hands on experiences I have gotten in clinical. I also liked that classes were offered face to face instead of just online. Overall the program for me was great. I liked that we got a lot of hands on experience throughout the program. I like how we have a lot my clinical experience than a 4 year does. I liked that we had an average of 4 exams per class and that we took the average grade from those 4 exams. I like that the teachers were all very available and open to answering questions and discussing course material. I always felt that there was someone I could turn to when I needed it. Each teacher was enthusiastic about the material she/he was teaching, and I felt that it really contributed to our learning in the courses. Clinicals and simulation labs really helped me connect the classroom material to "real life" nursing, and I felt they were a crucial part of my learning experience. I really appreciated the opportunity to complete tasks independently (whether in clinical or sim lab) and then the follow-up by either an instructor or a nurse preceptor to go over what I did well and what I could improve upon. I really liked the way the program is laid out for you initially, so that you know what to expect and you know what you can work on while you're on the wait list. I also liked the option to take classes in the summer, it was a great help to be able to take one of the challenging theory classes before hand to help lighten my overall semester load. I like the way the clinical experience is laid out for us, working up to acute care and the paperwork. I liked the fact that the instructors are always available for feedback and help whenever we need it. If there is something that we are having trouble understanding, the instructors would make time to meet either after class or during office hours to help us understand it better. The program is also very up to date on the most current evidence based practice and that is very helpful as some of us have been LPNs for a while and some things have changed since we were in school the last time. I liked the flexibility of being able to have classes online or in person as well as having summer courses available. The flexibility, cost of the overall program. The instructors are always willing to help you at anytime because they want you to advance and be successful That you guys did offer a variety of clinical site experiences ex. Community rotation and in the hospital setting being able to be on different floor. I liked the majority of the clinicals and a lot of hands on experience. A majority of the instructors were very knowledgeable and helpful. A few did not know much about the program and were not of help when asking questions. I thought that this program put me in a good position to pass my NCLEX. Affordable I enjoyed the instructors. They were all very helpful and encouraging and they always were willing to go above and beyond to make sure questions got answered. I liked all the hands-on experiences we got in clinical settings. I liked how the teachers were willing to help you succeed in whatever way you needed. I liked the way the content was given, some teachers better than others. I liked the places we were able to go for clinicals. I liked that the instructors were very helpful in helping me succeed. They would give me feedback on what I needed to improve on or how they could help me overcome my test anxiety. The Instructors- everyone was very helpful and engaged in our learning. They all seemed like they wanted us to learn. I liked the amount of clinical time we had. I also liked the number of classes we had at one time because it wasn't too many credits. The instructors were all really helpful and supportive (minus one or two that caused more stress than anything else). Patti is also awesome!

I really liked the advanced clinical experience. I feel like i got the most from that experience. It was great to be able to float all over the hospital and see so many different things. It is also very doable having class time one day a week. I work full time so it was very beneficial for me the way this program is set up. It allows me to test for my RN The organization I liked the convenience of having online and face to face classes. It was much easier to manage life outside of school with taking an online class each semester. I also liked the variety of clinical rotations and the different learning opportunities available to us. All the hands on experiences

Q4 - What would you change about this program? The skills inventory that we are to fill out prior to the start of our first day of transition has skills that I was never offered the opportunity to perform in clinical or the skills lab. Night classes for a small group of students(if possible). I have met with some individuals outside of school encouraging them to go back to school for nursing, one main reason they haven't gone back is because they are unable to attend morning classes and do not want to apply for financial aid. (This was a very small group of individuals I believe 2-3 people). More meetings for Student Faculty Liaison Group. One change that needs to be done for this program is ATI exams needs to be spread out more. Another change that can help the students out in this program is providing students with housing such as students who lives out of town. The amount of money that a student is using does not help out with the knowledge that is needed. The third change would be having some classes be available in other areas such as Black River Fall campus, to help reduce the amount of driving and money spending to get to a class. Nothing I liked the skills labs we had offered in first and third semester, however I wish that they were more structured to ensure that we were practicing the skills correctly and more than once. We were usually sent off to follow a handbook and do them with a partner. I think it would have been more beneficial to do a serious run through with the instructor to ensure that we were performing the skills correctly. I would change up the scheduling. There was a lot of potential for class over lap. It added additional stress to the student body. There was a bit of communication issues with clinical sites as well. I would want our teachers to use the ATI books more. They are great resources, but not really acknowledged or explained. It would be nice if they were incorporated into the classroom more because we spent so much money on them and they are nice resources to reinforce what has been taught to us. I also wish when we were on our Med Surg clinical rotations if we could stay on one unit longer than just the 1 or 2 days. Just when I was getting the feel for the unit and the staff and beginning to feel comfortable there, we were switched to a different unit. I wish I could have had XXXXX XXXXX for more classes! I honestly do not know what I would change about this program. Even though, powerpoints were made available to us, I still felt that we needed to complete the readings. There was far too much to read, especially when I came upon fourth semester. There was no time to fit all of the work in. It would be nice to narrow down the reading or highlight what really is needed for the program. I didn't expect the instructors to "teach to the test" but a little bit more of a focus of what to read would have helped. r There have been times when things seem very unorganized. Dates and times seem to change at the last minute and instructors do not understand that we have other obligations. The professional and management class had the exams originally scheduled on days that Gundersen had clinical and the instructor changed both test dates to Tuesday. Then a few days before the second exam she wanted to change the date and time to Monday so everyone could test. I had to work that Monday because I put it on my calendar that we tested on Tuesday. It is not fair to change dates at the last minute to make it more convenient for the instructors. The ATI for transition is very confusing. A meeting before hand to explain the system and also to explain when and what to do to register for the NCLEX, the teachers say everything is on blackboard to explain it but hearing how to do it from an instructor would be way more beneficial. The only thing I would change is how transition is done. There was a lot of miscommunication. I didn't get my schedule until a week before it started which caused a lot of problems with my job. I feel that when preceptors are chosen they should be selected based on what their schedule is first. There should be more diversity of staff - men/women/other ethnic. There's too much journaling regarding the SLOs. This should be kept to a minimal so that students can really focus on content learned in class or clinical rather than try to draw up experiences from clinical because they are worried about finding an experience that relates to that topic. I wish there were more tutor's available to help with the more complex classes, like Pharmacology, Complex Health Alt 1 & 2

One thing I would change about the program is to possibly if in budget offer student who are at clinical and transition for long hours gas cards to help. This would help. Being in nursing school doesn't allow much time to work. So between driving and being in class or at clinical a gas card or even a meal card would help out so much. The food pantry is also helpful! The only thing I would want changed would be to have more instructors for clinical. I know in first semester for clinical rotation it was difficult learning to complete tasks such as passing medications with a group of 8 and only one instructor. Even if another instructor could be present during that clinical for half the day would make things run smoother. There isn't much that I would change about the program. If I were to suggest one thing, it would be that we have different uniform colors from the rest of Western's clinical groups, such as respiratory therapy. Many times during clinical employees would ask if we were nursing students or something else from Western. I also think that somehow we should incorporate the ATI books that we bought first semester. I honestly didn't use them as much as I should have for the price we paid for them. Maybe have some assignments due from the book and online and not just online. I feel that overall the program is very well organized. Of course, nothing is perfect and there were small miscommunications or things that were unclear to the students. Organization is always something that could be improved upon, but overall I would not change the program. There isn't a lot I would change. I would say the ability to go part time once in the program, but from my understanding that is offered now. It would be nice if there was a way to take tests online. I drive an hour and there are no locations closer to me. Or being able to take the tests at a campus other than a western campus. DEU paper work. Only have one DEU per week. It was a lot to fill out each shift back to back since we were there two days in a row. Simulation during the pregant mother. Have interaction with a newborn what assessments need to be completed following birth ect. Offer two days for a class instead of one long day of that class. Example of classes are CHA1 and CHA2 It is very difficult to figure out which classes to take and where to be etc. I always felt that if you could figure out where you needed to be and what needed to be taken you should pass nursing school. There are a lot of hoops to jump through. Not knowing your schedule with clinicals right away, or being told that it is subject to change is difficult. Most of us have lives that include family, work, and daycare schedules. Some of this can't be changed last minute. I would lighten the load on the busy work that really doesn't add to our learning. Such as all the different repeated care plans, assignments, double charting. Not having availability of Transition schedule until the last minute. Having assignments graded and feedback in an appropriate time frame-some assignments were not given feedback until a month after they were submitted/required to be submitted. Maybe just making it an option from the beginning that students can go year round to get done sooner. I went through the summer and I am glad it was offered to me. I would make sure that some of the teachers are still in it for the students and are willing to help them out rather than always criticizing. Nothing During third semester, we had CHA1 and then had to wait over an hour for Mental Health to begin- I realize that it is nice to have a break in between but in all honesty, it would be even nicer to get done sooner. I also think that Pharm is a very important class and I think that I learned more about medications in my third and fourth semesters... maybe change when students take Pharm so they get more out of it? We spent a ton of money on ATI and then after the first 2 semesters never looked at the books again. That is frustrating. We did use the assessments but I don't feel like that makes the cost worth it. I do like ATI but use the text a bit more. Provide a class (like 1 day worth) on how to write a paper/apa. I was lucky that I came in with a strong knowledge of APA and paper/research paper writing, but a lot of my classmates did not and had a hard time figuring it out on their own.

I am a LPN to RN student. I feel like a lot of times the instructors wouldn't explain things enough in detail. I feel like they just assumed we all knew what they were talking about. I think their is room for improvement in this area. I also felt some teachers were more willing to help than others. Lots of confusion for incoming transition students due to lack of proper orientation. With the one credit class faculty should focus on important things for success instead of just assigning homework tasks. Being able to navigate blackboard and having proper access and orientation to the ATI would be much more beneficial to students. Less busy work

Q5 - How many of your nursing classes did you choose to take in an online format? # Answer % Count 1 None 13.89% 5 2 Less than % or more 11.11% 4 Total 100% 36

Q7 - As a result of this program: I have learned effective communication skills. # Answer % Count 1 Strongly Disagree 0.00% 0 2 Disagree 0.00% 0 3 Neither Agree nor Disagree 8.33% 3 4 Agree 52.78% 19 5 Strongly Agree 38.89% 14 Total 100% 36 Q8 - Provide any comments you have on effective communication skills you learned. I have learned how to communicate as a professional to my peers, instructors, and other health care professionals in the clinical setting. This program has turned me into a speaker, leader, and a professional that enjoys speaking to large groups of students. One effective communication skills that I have learned is being concise with my skills and being confidence with what I am trying to communicate with whom. My communication skills has to be my strongest will that I displayed as a person. The use of therapeutic communication to engage with patient as well as to adapted base on the patient need. I think that the nursing classes helped educate me on different communication techniques and then with the help of the instructors, I was able to practice them in the clinical setting. I have learned that it works best to clarify and put ideas in simple terms. I have learned that the staff in this program is really helpful and to ask questions. I used to be afraid to ask questions, but I have learned it is better to ask than to not be sure of something. This program has taught me ways to handle delegating and working with others. I feel I have learned how to effectively use therapeutic communication skills. I also feel I have been able to strengthen my assessment questions, by asking open ended questions geared to what I want to know, without the patient really knowing that I am assessing them. I feel I have strengthened the way I communicate with staff and patients. There have been opportunities to send s to staff and use professional language. I have also had opportunities to communicate with the interdisciplinary team. I've learned to ask many questions when something is unclear. Communication is very important in nursing and without it the quality care for the patient isn't as effective. I am proud of how my communication skills have evolved. I now feel confident in communicating with all individuals of the health care team. I learned to watch not only my verbal but nonverbal skills. Effective communication involves active listening and eye contact. I believe I came into the program with strong communication skills. The nursing program helped enhance the skills I brought with me. I feel that I communicate better not only with verbal but, also with writing.

I have found that I have learned to communicate effective and in doing so the further in the program I found it unprofessional for some instructors to not reply to s when you have questions or concerns. I feel more comfortable with my communication skills at the end of 4th semester compared to the beginning of 1st semester. I felt that each opportunity where I was pushed beyond my comfort level to communicate with other students, nurses, CNAs, doctors, or other health care professionals gave me more confidence in my communication skills. I feel that a student learns best by doing, so these opportunities were of great value to me. I not only enhanced my communication skills but I feel I have a better understanding of the importance of effective communication. I learned the use of SBAR in the past, but this last semester has really engrained it in my head and I feel that I am much better at giving a thorough report to oncoming shifts now that I have this concept down pat. I have learned that you have to speak up if you think something has to be changed and no one is going to do it for you. I learned more about therapeutic communication from my Mental Health rotation. By being in a clinical setting from semester 1 I learned good communication skills with my fellow students and other facility. It also made me comfortable talking with nurses and doctors. This program has helped me go out of my comfort zone and helped me with talking to more people and learn how to talk to patients and doctors and teachers. It helped me be more expressive about concerns, problems, or other circumstances. I feel like my communication skills have improved greatly. I have learned how to approach situations and handle them better.

Q9 - As a result of this program: I am able to apply mathematical concepts. # Answer % Count 1 Strongly Disagree 0.00% 0 2 Disagree 0.00% 0 3 Neither Agree nor Disagree 8.33% 3 4 Agree 61.11% 22 5 Strongly Agree 30.56% 11 Total 100% 36 Q10 - Provide any comments you have on mathematical concepts you learned. The concepts I have learned were reviewed in almost every class through out every semester. I believe it was regularly practicing mathematical concepts in class that helped me retain the information. I believe that ALL instructor in ALL semester theory courses should continue to practice math problems during EVERY class period. I was able to relearned some mathematical concepts that was needed for this nursing program. This mathematical concepts will provide me with ways to help reduce the risk of medication error. How to calculate the drip rate of an IV I think it is very beneficial to have the mathematical questions on each exam. We only spent a small amount of time on the mathematical concepts but it has helped. The main focus was on the critical thinking and nurse logic side of science. I almost wish we had more complex math question reviews in class. The basic rate calculations I can do, but the only exposure we had to complex mathematical questions was that CLT math worksheet from the beginning of first semester. I feel that I am able to successfully figure out drip rates, insulin drips, heparin drips, kg/ml/hr and on. I feel that my math skills are strong. I am able to calculate dosages and convert units. This makes me much more confident when giving medications On every test there were math questions. I liked how Char in first semester reviewed one math question every day in class, I wish the other teachers would have done that too. Coming into 4th semester our first assignment was on complicated math questions before class even began. I wish we would of had a day for the instructor to refresh us and teach us how to do the more complicated problems. Math has always been a strong suit of mine. However, I struggled a little with the math that involved weights. I learned how to calculate medications based on weight and converting pounds to kilograms. I learned how to properly dispense the right dose based on what is ordered. The math was complex and presented a challenge for me. I appreciate that the math is something focused on throughout the program. I can definitely see my growth in math skills since first semester. From transitioning from third to fourth semester I think the math somewhat was harder than what we learned in the previous semesters. I feel that there should be more of a bridge in the advanced math and practice

I struggled with math 1st -3rd semesters and I think it was very helpful to start teaching us the math calculations in 1st semester. I took statistics over the summer before 4th semester and I believe that helped my math knowledge. I never got a math question wrong on the exams in 4th semester. I felt that since our first skills lab where we focused on math concepts often and really drilled the math, I have been able to complete math problems with ease. Learning it right away in skills lab definitely helped me get a handle on it and continue to perfect my math skills. Before the program, I really disliked math and it's still not my favorite, but the way it was taught helped me to have a better understanding. It's not so horrible now. I have improved since semester one with my math concepts. It helps that there are math questions on every test. I was able to do this before entering the program so I feel as though it did not help nor hinder my mathematics ability. I did not learn anything new as far as math goes- was required to take a "Dosage Calc" class at another school prior to coming here. I am still working on becoming proficient in math concepts but the instructors were great about having math questions on every test and working on math in clinical setting. Having refreshers and math problems on every test definitely help keep it fresh

Q11 - As a result of this program: I learned how to transfer social and natural science theories into practical applications. # Answer % Count 1 Strongly Disagree 0.00% 0 2 Disagree 0.00% 0 3 Neither Agree nor Disagree 8.33% 3 4 Agree 63.89% 23 5 Strongly Agree 27.78% 10 Total 100% 36 Q12 - Provide any comments you have on transferring social and natural science theories into practical applications. Social science how to be a good citizen and follow rules It has helped put a lot of theories in perspective. You look at the world around you differently due to the knowledge you have gained. After learning about disease processes and the body system in class and then seeing what we learned in clinical was interesting and it was neat to be able to make those connections. From taking what we have learned from the classes and applying it to actual practice has help further instill the information and understand the big concepts when actually applying it versus just learning it. I felt that social skills that we learned in class were transferred to my clinical work; at first, it felt akward, but after a while it just felt natural. We used many social science theories with communication skills. I feel I have come a long way since semester 1 in my knowledge of the human body.

Q13 - As a result of this program: I learned critical thinking skills. # Answer % Count 1 Strongly Disagree 0.00% 0 2 Disagree 0.00% 0 3 Neither Agree nor Disagree 8.57% 3 4 Agree 40.00% 14 5 Strongly Agree 51.43% 18 Total 100% 35 Q14 - Provide any comments you have on critical thinking skills you learned. Some critical thinking skills that I have learned are observant of my surrounding, being able to apply what I have learned, and evaluate it in the end. Always know the why of things when you are doing it. Throughout the course of the program, my critical thinking skills have definitely improved. Critical thinking is a huge part of nursing and now I feel more prepared to go into my future practice because I have obtained these skills throughout the past four semesters. I have improved my nursing related critical thinking skills by a large amount. Critical thinking in general has never been a issue. My critical thinking score got worse from the first time we took the critical thinking test in first semester to now. I think now I over analyze things. I feel that I still have a long way to go in developing my critical thinking skills, but considering where I started, I feel like my critical thinking skills have developed. I feel critical thinking skills will become more well developed with more time in the nursing career. I have learned that anytime I am passing a medication or performing a procedure I must look at all the information that I have and make sure that what I am doing is in the best interest of the patient. Since first semester the instructors stressed critical thinking and I do believe we have all grown in this department. The way we think near the end of 4th semester compared to first semester and our rationales for doing things have grown tremendously. Our instructors pushed us to do better. My critical thinking skills have improved immensely throughout this program. I feel confident that I can apply excellent critical thinking skills with all patient care. This is a direct result of all clinical experiences throughout the program. Critical thinking is especially important in clinical settings when I am collecting data or assessing a client and I have to draw a conclusion about what's going on with them or how to best provide intervention. Critical thinking is crucial as a nurse. This program definitely focused on building our critical thinking skills. From day one to now I can and have seen growth in thinking ad piecing things together and understanding why.

Being at clinical 4th semester, everything seemed to come together. whereas with the other semesters we hadn't learned everything so it always seemed like something was missing or was needing to look something up. Even though my grade in the ATI critical thinking exit was lower than the entrance, I believe that I have made huge progress in my critical thinking skills. I feel that the teachers really provided us with positive examples of how to critically think through a situation. I was able to transfer those to my classroom and clinical work, and I feel that I really get the big picture. It is not always an inside the box answer and sometimes you have to look outside of the box as every patient is different, even if they have similar or the same diagnosis. The past two semesters really enforced my critical thinking skills and how one thing effects another. I have improved in my critical thinking skills. I am not thinking about one area I am looking at the whole picture. I fell as though my critical thinking skills were enhanced by this program. Again, the ability to be in a clinical setting since semester 1 helped enforce this skill Absolutely. I came in 1st semester kind of struggling and wondering how I would ever be able to answer questions on the NCLEX. Today, I feel like I have the knowledge and a strong understanding and even if I don't know the answer right off the bat, I can sit there and critically think about how each answer applies to the question and this obviously helps during tests greatly. Some instructors were really good at getting you to help connect the dots and put all the pieces together. That was really helpful because if your just told you don't learn it as well. I feel like all the dots now connect. I can see the bigger picture and how things fit together. Don't get me wrong I have lots to learn yet, It is just a great feeling knowing things are finally making sense.

Q15 - As a result of this program: I have learned to use technology effectively. # Answer % Count 1 Strongly Disagree 0.00% 0 2 Disagree 0.00% 0 3 Neither Agree nor Disagree 13.89% 5 4 Agree 58.33% 21 5 Strongly Agree 27.78% 10 Total 100% 36 Q16 - Provide any comments you have on what you learned about using technology effectively. I wish we could have had additional time working with the equipment Western has in skills lab: chest tubes, IV pumps, suction, NG tubes, etc. technology is a good resource when books are not available. I wish we would have taken the electronic charting practice more seriously in skills lab. It was often checked for completion and not really analyzed for accuracy. I think it would have been good practice to practice writing a nursing note, etc. I have learned how to implement it into my daily life in order to save time and work efficiently. I think I had a pretty good grasp on technology before I started the program There was many different sites and technology we use in this program. I personally am not good at technology and don't like so much on line things to figure out on my own. For the most part I can manage my way in blackboard and chart at the facilities for clinicals. Again bringing up ATI, I feel like there is more on ATI that we can use but don't know how to access it. I have learned to navigate throughout the EPIC system at Gundersen. I have had all my clinicals at this hospital. This was a great help in being able to know where to go when documenting patient care. I hope to work at Gundersen so I can continue to grow my use of technology in a system I am already familiar with. I used technology to communicate to my instructors and peers. I learned to use technology in the clinical setting to document patient assessments and other pertinent information related to their care such as I/Os and Vitals. I learned to always remember to log off the computer when I am not using. I was familiar with using technology prior to starting this program. This was helpful as it is necessary to be able to maneuver around on Blackboard and computer charting at clinical. I am very comfortable using EPIC which I think is a good technology skill to have. Also experience with IV pumps has improved during my experience in 4th semester clinical. I became efficient with the use of blackboard and the EMR at each facility at which I had clinical.

There are many different computer systems out there and we have had to use several different kinds. Also, we have had to do our research and it broadened my knowledge of where to look and where not to look for valid information. I have learned about different computer programs that different facilities use from clinicals. However, having only used a program 1 time in second semester and then during 4th semester your instructors just expects you to know how to use the program is a bit frustrating. I was able to become proficient in using EMR's because of this program. I think the sim labs were a good tool to get our hands wet into what clinical would be like. Even though the scenarios were usually something that probably wouldn't see, it was nice to be able to critically think. It would be nice to have a couple more computers available in skills/simlab

Q17 - As a result of this program: I have learned to value myself and work ethically with others in a diverse population. # Answer % Count 1 Strongly Disagree 0.00% 0 2 Disagree 0.00% 0 3 Neither Agree nor Disagree 5.71% 2 4 Agree 57.14% 20 5 Strongly Agree 37.14% 13 Total 100% 35 Q18 - Provide any comments you have on what you learned about valuing yourself and working ethically with others in a diverse population. I learned to value myself and provide others with diversity. The ability to have my own beliefs but at the same time respect those who have a different belief from mine. Work together to achieve the best outcome of a situation. Be open mind. Because of the variety of clinical practice this program offers, I have been able to experience many different situations that have provided me with the opportunity to test my ethics. Also, with the help of my clinical instructors, I have gained much more confidence in my skills and abilities. My ability to work with a culturally diverse population has always been a asset of mine. I have now learned how to deal with people throughout the lifespan more effectively. This course has made me aware that others need to work on how they deal with a diverse population. I have learned a lot of the different beliefs and rituals other cultures have and how to respect these practices as a nurse. I have learned to always ask patients what their spiritual beliefs are and to do my best to acknowledge them. I feel this program helped me build upon my previous ethic and moral beliefs to where I feel comfortable and confident to be able to strongly advocate for my patients. I have learned to consider the patients own beliefs and culture when discussing health issues and care options. It is important to understand my own beliefs and how they play into the care I provide. I learned that I do have to value myself and my opinion does matter. It is good to work with people who have a different outlook on things. We worked with many people in a diverse population and that was never an issue. This program has not only given me the knowledge I need to work as an effective nurse, but has also helped me grow as a person. It has taught me to know what my own personal beliefs and values are and to be able to provide great care to all patients without being judgmental. I learned to be respectful of others that I interact with whether they are the patients, their families, or a member of the health care team. I learned that I should know what my ethics are so that I can stand firm when I see something that is alarming.

Within this program it subjects and educates you on different ethnicity. I feel more comfortable that I know how to uphold ethically with diverse populations because I understand their culture a bit more now. Clinical experiences have been great in seeing and experiencing this. From working with interdisciplinary team members and patients from using interpreter services. I have had the opportunity to work with a few different diverse populations which I think is always a good experience. I have learned to assert myself and not feel that I am "not good enough" to complete nursing tasks. I have also encountered situations where I had to use my ethical judgement and decide what to do, and I think nursing school has really helped me grow ethically and opened my eyes to the diversity of the population. I have always felt that I work ethically with others but I think that working with some of the patients that I did, it broadened that a little more. First and four semester hit the concept of ethics the most, though it was enforced throughout all four semesters, I now have a better understanding. This program brought many diverse experiences which helps broaden my outlook on things.

Q19 - As a result of this program: I am able to make decisions that incorporate the importance of sustainability. # Answer % Count 1 Strongly Disagree 0.00% 0 2 Disagree 0.00% 0 3 Neither Agree nor Disagree 2.78% 1 4 Agree 66.67% 24 5 Strongly Agree 30.56% 11 Total 100% 36 Q20 - Provide any comments you have on what you learned about incorporating the importance of sustainability in decisions you make. I learned that be able to maintain a certain level of decision making has given me a chance to speak up for what I want and for who I want to be. Be able to have the foundation (knowledge) to make the best decision in caring for someone. The course has made me aware of the long-term effects of certain decisions that I make. It is important to plan ahead when doing a procedure or even assisting with cares, not to be wasteful and know what you need to bring into the room and what is already there. This goes along with the critical thinking aspect. It's important to think critically when making decisions that incorporate the importance of sustainability. Throughout nursing school, I was shown how to be conservative in my use of materials while still accomplishing the task effectively. Whether in skills lab or on a clinical site, I feel that I have collected some valuable information on sustainability.

Q22 - As a result of this program, I learned to: implement my role as a nurse in ways that reflect integrity, responsibility, ethical practices, and an evolving professional identity as a nurse committed to evidence-based practice, caring, advocacy, and quality care. # Answer % Count 1 Strongly Disagree 0.00% 0 2 Disagree 0.00% 0 3 Neither Agree nor Disagree 2.78% 1 4 Agree 50.00% 18 5 Strongly Agree 47.22% 17 Total 100% 36 Q23 - Provide any comments you have about learning this program outcome. During the last stage of clinical, I was able to implement myself as a nurse role and use integrity, responsibility, ethical practices, and an evolving professional identity to be able to become a nurse. Provide quality care to everyone for the best outcome as well as to advocate for the patient for their best interest I truly think this program does a great job of preparing you to be a functioning nurse in the medical field. The instructors were great about using examples in class to relate the content to practice and the clinical instructors were great about noting when we applied knowledge from the classroom to our practice. This last semester clinical has benefited me the most by being able to put all of our past knowledge together. The instructor did a great job of pushing me out of my comfort zone to go function independently and use all of the things listed above to care for patients. This program has instilled a nurses way of thinking when it comes to many challenging situations. This course will not teach you integrity because you should already have that before considering the medical profession. I now understand that using research to improve your practice is very effective. All of these things were repeatedly reinforced to us through out the program. This last semester I learned a lot of advocacy through the community clinical. One thing I struggled with was learning about the different funding and insurances that are available. I wish these things would have been taught to us more. I feel very strongly about my future nursing career and advocating for patients and providing integrity, responsibility and using evidenced based practice. I have learned how to be a strong advocate for my patients and the importance of evidence-based practice. This program has taught me the roles of a nurse and what I should be doing and not doing. This is a big part of everything that I have learned. Like I said in my last comment, I learned to know my own beliefs and values while providing excellent patient care to all even if they do not share in my beliefs. I have also learned to incorporate this into my personal life. Throughout my clinical experiences I have been able to prove that I am professional and take responsibility for my actions.

Being a nurse is a noble and rewarding career. Patients and their families trust the nurse with their cares because they see that the nurse is confident, professional and knows what she/he is doing. As a nurse, it is important to always be respectful and make sure you provide quality care to patients to minimize safety and advocate for patients regardless of your stance on an issue. I have definitely seen a change in my outlook on responsibility and ethical practices. Western nursing program prepared me to be responsible at my job. They also helped me to understand to provide evidence based practice care. I actually have asked for a subscription to a nursing journal for Christmas. I feel that I understand the importance of my role as a nurse and have become much more professional and more able to provide quality care for the patients I take care of. I feel that our instructors here are really preparing us to be the best nurse possible, with a strong emphasis on all of the above. Sometimes there are things going on that you have no control over and you may not agree with personally, but you have to be the nurse that is able to take care of that patient, no matter what your own beliefs are. This last semester really engrained that into my head. This program really focused on the ethics and evidence based practice. You talk about these things more as a student than actually implementing. As a student, the preceptors we are assigned to and the instructors really help you find what you believe in and how to act appropriately. They help you find what kind of nurse you will be and how to bring that out in your practice.

Q24 - As a result of this program, I learned to: # Answer % Count 1 Strongly Disagree 0.00% 0 2 Disagree 0.00% 0 3 Neither Agree nor Disagree 11.11% 4 4 Agree 47.22% 17 5 Strongly Agree 41.67% 15 Total 100% 36 Q25 - Provide any comments you have about learning this program outcome. In some cases when patient are not able to communicate non-verbal communication can help us to determine many things that the patient is not able to verbalize. I am personally still not super confident in my communication, but I feel that the program did a great job of teaching us about different communication techniques and strategies. It is something that as I continue my practice I will feel more comfortable with. This program helps you grow in a short amount of time. Communication is very important in the nursing and medical profession. I wish this program would have taught us more how to communicate with providers and the correct way to write notes in patient's charts. Calling/paging a doctor intimidates me, and it would have been nice to get some education dealing with those types of situations and what the best things to say would be. I have learned how to appropriately chart, communicate with staff and patients using verbal and non verbal communication. It is important to be aware of not only what you are saying and how you are saying it, but also of body language and facial expressions. These can convey as much about your attitude as what you are saying. I have practiced many written contexts for homework and communicated with each instruuctor I believe that writing care plans immensely helped my written communication. This program helped build on my written and verbal communication skills. It also helped me recognize nonverbal communication better. As stated before I feel more confident in my abilities to professionally communicate with someone via and verbal. I feel that my communication skills have been enhanced during the program, and I feel able to communicate effectively with health care personnel in writing, verbally, and nonverbally. The Simulation labs and mapping was a great tool to help with this area. The use of SBAR has really helped with this for giving report or calling doctors so you come out more clearly as to what you need or are trying to say. Also, you can use this format when writing in the patients chart if needed so you don't leave any pertinent information out. Again, clear communication, whether it be verbal or nonverbal, is important when dealing with patients because they look up to you as the nurse to give them reassurance while in the hospital.

With the DEU program I was able to grow as a nurse in my communication skills. I had to use SBAR every shift when giving report. With that program I was able to communicate with the doctor or other members of the team about the well being of my patients. It varies. Some instructors will say that my written communication in regards to clinical paperwork is great. Then when I continue to do it for another instructor I am told it is all wrong. It gets frustrating. I know all instructors have different ways of teaching etc, but if they could all be on the same page with the way things need to be done would be beneficial. This program helped enhance all three communication styles. As stated previously students need a class period to teach how to research, use APA, and write an effective paper.

Q26 - As a result of this program, I learned to: integrate social, mathematical, and physical sciences, pharmacology, and pathophysiology in clinical decision making. # Answer % Count 1 Strongly Disagree 0.00% 0 2 Disagree 0.00% 0 3 Neither Agree nor Disagree 2.78% 1 4 Agree 52.78% 19 5 Strongly Agree 44.44% 16 Total 100% 36 Q27 - Provide any comments you have about learning this program outcome. I think the concept maps did a great job of helping connect everything. I have learn how all of the content that we were taught works together. I am better at pharmacology than I thought I would be, but still not sure of myself. I wish there would have been more questions on exams regarding medications in previous semesters. This program has strengthened my mathematical skills when it comes to pharmacology and drip rates. I feel I have a good overall knowledge of pharmacology and pathophysiology. Throughout all of my nursing classes, pharmacology was reiterated. This was extremely helpful as pharmacology was a class that I learned the information, tested on it, and then it went to the back of the brain. Having some pharmacology in each class helped to maintain my knowledge regarding medications. It is imperative to know the pathophysiology of the disease to know why you are giving a medication or doing a procedure and to know what to look for as a result of what you have done. All of these areas of content comes to mind when making decisions. Although I didn't like it at the time, writing out all the med cards really helped gain my knowledge of medications. The program taught us that all pieces of the puzzle are important in patient care, not just focusing on "fixing" the disease. I definitely feel that I have grown throughout this program with my understanding of how to apply pathophysiology concepts and pharmocological and add this now to my nursing practice. As each semester went on and we had experience with math and pharmacology, my knowledge has improved in those aspects. Instructors are always requiring us to verbalize rationale in order to enhance our skills in this area. During clinical my instructors would ask me questions about the medications I was passing. That helped me become more familiar with the medications. Pharmacology was an amazing class to help better myself as a nurse. It really helped in my critical thinking in the clinical setting.
