4 Ronald A. Paulus, MD President and CEO of Mission Health Prior to joining Mission in September 2010, Dr. Paulus served as executive vice president, clinical operations at Geisinger Health System, responsible for the operations of its $1.3 billion clinical enterprise, including two hospitals, an 800+ multispecialty group practice and more than 40 ambulatory care facilities. Dr. Paulus also served as Geisinger s chief innovation officer, where he was responsible for ensuring system-wide innovation. Prior to joining Geisinger, Dr. Paulus was co-founder, president and CEO of CareScience, Inc., now part of Premier Healthcare Informatics, a clinical solutions and data analytics provider which aims to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare. Before that, he served as vice president-operations at Salick Health Care, Inc., a national provider of oncology and dialysis services subsequently acquired by Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Paulus received his MD degree from The School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania and his MBA, concentration in healthcare management, and BS in economics from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He has published numerous peer-reviewed Leadership Asheville Presentation articles and I October speaks 1, regularly 2013 I on 4 the topics of healthcare quality and efficiency, innovation, physician leadership and new models of care. 7 Quality Improvement In 2013, Mission Health was ranked as one of the Top 15 Health Systems in the nation by Truven Health Analytics for the second year in a row. Mission Health is one of only two health systems to receive this recognition in 2012 and The only health system in North Carolina to achieve this distinction. Mission Hospital was ranked this year as one of the nation s Top 100 Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics for a record fifth consecutive year. Received the highest safety rating among North Carolina hospitals by Consumer Reports. 8 Quality Improvement Since 2010, Mission Health has gone from approximately the 75 th percentile in patient satisfaction to nearly the 90 th percentile. Actual vs. Expected mortality at Mission Hospital has improved from a ratio of 0.96 to a ratio of 0.60 (lower is better) Meaning that today a person has 40 percent less chance of dying when admitted to Mission Hospital compared to the average hospital. in 2012 alone, Mission Hospital avoided more than 500 deaths that would otherwise have occurred had those same patients been admitted to the average hospital rather than to Mission Hospital.
