Tomorrow is the last day at Common Good for signups. We are exctending the final day to November 29th for putting in applications at Rogue Credit Union, Umpqua Bank, and Coast Community Health Center just north of Driftwood School. Mark your calendar for the Port Orford Holiday Bazaar, Saturday, December 2 from 9am- 3pm at the Community Center. The Friends of the Port Orford Library will be there featuring the same high-quality items that you find in the Friends Store. There will be something for everyone on your holiday list: books, cards, baked goods, unusual gifts for the hard to please and an impressive assortment of See s Candies. COAST COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER NEWS Bandon The number of caring, experienced health professionals at Coast Community Health Center is growing. That s good news for patients looking for quality primary health care closer to home in South Coos and North Curry counties. Team-based care has always been a priority at Coast Community Health Center. This summer and fall, the health center announced several firsts in their service area, including recruitment of pediatric specialists and a physician assistant. New and established patients experience even more efficient routine and acute care thanks to additional providers with multiple areas of expertise. Our additional providers are opening up capacity, making the clinic nimble and responsive to patient needs, said Executive Director Linda Maxon. Maxon was pleased to welcome two pediatric providers to the health center this summer. For many years, families seeking pediatric specialists traveled outside Bandon and North Curry County for medical care, adding travel time and cost for pediatric services. Dr. Carla McKelvey and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Patricia Savage now serve children Rain 2017 YTD: ** November 2017: 7.72 *** 17/18 Water Year: ** begins 10/1-ends 9/30 Gauge Broke missed rain and young adults at the health center in Bandon. NP Savage also meets with patients in the Port Orford/Langlois school district in the Pirate Wellness Center at Pacific High School. Savage has worked in private and public health clinics, as well as school-based health centers and healthy start programs. She appreciates the health center s commitment to affordable health care. Outreach health services in the Port Orford school district include wellness visits, sports physicals, immunizations and acute care. The school setting is more accessible and timely for kids, said Savage. And, care is available without worrying about whether you can afford it. Family Nurse Practitioner Whitney Lynn and Physician Assistant Andrew Fraser joined the health care team this fall. Similar to physician or nurse practitioner training, Fraser s PA education includes a range of health coursework and hands-on experience, including two rural campus rotations in Coos County. Fraser serves patients with supervising physician Dr. Hank Homes. In primary care settings, PAs frequently improve patient access through follow-up visits and sameday care, noted Dr. McKelvey. McKelvey is the regional associate dean for the Oregon Health and Science University Campus for Rural Health - South Coast. She met Fraser during his Coos County training. She appreciates his energy and his particular interest in working with geriatric patients. Fraser said his introduction to Coast Community Health Center, during his rural health rotation, was so welcoming he spoke with

3 Maxon about a position with the health center. It instantly felt like home. There s an excitement in the community about how to rethink health and access to care, said Fraser. Fraser considers patients lifestyles and overall health experiences, especially when serving older patients who may deal with stress as a result of health issues. Clinical goals fall by the wayside if you aren t able to have trusting conversations about anxiety and fears about your health. I really like building relationships and having conversations and honest discussion around wellness goals, said Fraser. Construction plans for a second health clinic are underway in Port Orford. SEATTLE COAST GUARD CREW RETURNS FROM ARCTIC IN TIME FOR THANKSGIVING SEATTLE, WA Coast Guard Cutter Healy and its 87 crew are expected to return home to Seattle Tuesday at 11 a.m. in time for Thanksgiving following a 147-day deployment conducting science operations during four diverse missions in the Arctic Ocean. Healy s first mission with the Coast Guard Research and Development Center tested new technologies in the harsh Arctic environment. Healy tested two unmanned vehicles and a new oil skimmer to operate while in the ice. Healy also conducted joint operations with the U.S. Navy to reintroduce Arctic shipboard diving capabilities to the Coast Guard for the first time since Healy s crew also helped locate the wreckage of F/V Destination, which sank February. 11. The second mission this summer was in partnership with NOAA and in support of the Distributed Biological Survey and the Northern Chukchi Integrated Study. The study focused on biological hotspots along Alaska s Northeast continental shelf over a several year period. Over the course of the mission, Healy completed 476 casting operations during a period of 24-hour science. During Healy s final two missions of the summer, the crew worked with teams from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Wood s Hole Oceanographic Institute, the University of Delaware, and the University of Texas in support of the Canada Basin Acoustic Propagation Experiment. The first of the two missions focused on the deeper waters of the Canada Basin, while the last mission focused in shallower waters. Healy recovered seven deep-water moorings and 22 shallow-water moorings, conducted several bathymetric surveys, and completed 80 continuous hours of oceanography analysis along the Chukchi slope. Currently under the command of Capt. Greg Tlapa, Healy is the nation s premiere high-latitude research vessel and is the only U.S. military surface asset that deploys to and is capable of operating in the ice-covered waters of the Arctic. In addition to science operations, Healy is capable of conducting a range of Coast Guard operations such as search and rescue, ship escort, environmental protection and the enforcement of laws and treaties in the Polar Regions. Healy provides access and presence throughout the Arctic region to protect U.S. maritime borders and safeguard the maritime economy. Based out of Seattle, Healy is the largest ship in the Coast Guard with a displacement of 16,000 tons.
