1 healthcare Providing technology to enhance the patient experience
2 Dakota s mission within the healthcare sector is simple to be a leading provider of technology to help clinicians boost the patient experience. Since 2008, we have supported healthcare professionals in over 100 Trusts to understand and adopt barcode technology to improve patient safety. We specialise in fit-for-purpose solutions designed to improve efficient communication between medical professionals. These solutions typically include: Hardware recommendations Software integration with existing hospital systems Post sales training and support Technology focused company with the patient safety at the core of our solution offering, we deliver mobile point of care computing and printing solutions into both primary and secondary NHS environments. Aimed at reducing clinician administration time, improving care and providing the patient with a better experience, our expertise spans across a broad range of healthcare applications including: Printing solutions Wristbands and positive patient identification Mobile printing at the bedside Blood specimen labelling Pathology sample labelling Asset labelling Prescription labelling Mobile Point of Care RFID Asset Management Barcode Scanning As a real differentiator over many of our competitors is our ability to integrate with a multitude of hospital systems such as PAS, A&E, Maternity, theatre areas and blood tracking systems, via our fully GS1 certified PASidMED platform. Our in house expertise extends to the provision of best-of-breed products for healthcare applications. These products have been specifically manufactured with the NHS in mind and using special healthcare composites to help clinicians control the spread of harmful bacteria and aid infection control regimes. These products include: Wristband printing solutions 1D/2D barcode scanners Thermal transfer barcode printers and matching consumables Mobile wireless printers PDAs and mobile computers Tablet PCs Dakota has worked with the barcode standard authority GS1 UK to drive the adoption of barcoding technologies within the NHS, pioneering the way for the 2D DataMatrix barcode to be the symbology of choice for its flexibility and performance. We have invested significant time and development in having 2 fully certified solutions under the GS1 umbrella: I personally, as Head of the Equipment Project, would recommend Dakota for their expertise to help any solve the issues they are likely to face in delivering wristband printing and mobility solutions. SCANidMED for the barcode marking and reading of instruments used in a surgical environment or theatre PASidMED to provide seamless integration with numerous hospital systems and applications. 3 The power of PASidMED - Positive Patient ID Integration Software Following considerable demand from numerous s, Dakota has developed its integration engine software called PASidMED. PASidMED helps Trusts integrate with their PAS system to produce printed wristbands or Case Note labels without physically altering the PAS software itself. This saves time, resource and money. Rolling out a credible working solution within days is key when your regular provider can t deliver quickly. PASidMED integration software can be deployed at a fraction of the cost charged by some healthcare software vendors and PAS providers, our technical team has the ability to respond quickly. SoloMED - Where Patient Safety Matters The NPSA Safer Practice Notice No.24 aims to standardise wristbands to improve patient safety. The NHS has a duty to provide a first class service to all. A number of questions do spring to mind: What happens if PAS is unavailable? Where will we extract patient demographic information from? Will we have to revert back to handwritten wristbands? What happens in Major Incident situations? How will Maternity units cope with this? All of the above scenarios potentially introduce risk back in to the Patient Additionally, PASidMED can be used to produce thermal printed labels to ensure high quality output and ease of barcode scanning. We re keen to demonstrate how technology is helping clinicians to boost the patient experience wherever we can. The PASidMED solution from Dakota will help provide the following: Seamless integration with your PAS system or OCS Formatted printed wristbands in accordance with NPSA guidance 2D DataMatrix barcodes containing hospital no., PAS no., hospital identifiers Neo-natal/maternity conformance Identification process that the NPSA SPN is trying to avoid. As a solution to this, Dakota Integrated Solutions has introduced SoloMED. SoloMED is a standalone, contingency wristband printing solution for instances where PAS is unavailable. The easy to use interface allows you to enter the information required on the wristband via the user PC as normal while PAS is unavailable. The software will thereafter carry out checks to ensure the information entered conforms to NPSA recommended standard (e.g. will only allow 10 digit NHS number, converts last name into capital letters etc). Contingency software for when PAS is unavailable or in stances of Major Incidents where you need to produce wristbands quickly On-site commissioning to ensure a live, working solution Case note labels produced with higher quality print (including barcodes) to alleviate risk management issues. Key Features of SoloMED : Loaded directly on to PC not client server Ability to print when network is down Scalable with different field headings and wristband sizes automatically handled No modifications to PAS or hospital systems required Automatically re-formats demographic input data to NPSA guidelines Validation checks key input data Ability to generate a 2D DataMatrix barcode Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Deployment of e-ordering using the trust s Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system Consolidation of the trust s hospital systems by replacing A&E, Radiology and Theatre systems in to QuadraMed CPR Removal of paper ordering in all inpatient areas Provide the ability to order and print specimen labels at the bedside Improve Patient Safety by providing printed wristbands at the point of entry via QuadraMed CPR PAS across 2 hospitals Provision of a fully integrated middleware wristband solution with automatic PAS look up, formatting and production of printed wristbands Full compliance with NPSA Safer Practice notice Provision of a fully compliant 2D DataMatrix barcode solution Configuration of all hardware with trusts Cisco wireless LAN Fully compliant solution for paediatric and neo-natal patients. What the trust said I personally, as head of the equipment project, would recommend Dakota for their expertise to help any trust solve the issues they are likely to face in delivering wristband printing and mobility solutions. Dakota worked closely with the hardware vendors and infrastructure providers to propose solutions to the issues we faced and implement new, more effective ways of deploying this technology. Dakota s knowledge of the technology involved including barcoding symbology was invaluable in rolling out the Electronic Systems across the trust. Dakota have certainly helped solve the technological challenges we faced at the trust. Peter Aspinall, Head of IMandT Lancashire Teaching Hospitals
4 Aintree University Hospitals Deployment of e-ordering using the trust s Medway Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system Removal of paper ordering in all inpatient areas Provide the ability to dynamically order and print specimen labels at the bedside Integrate the scanned barcode via the patient wristband to correctly verify the patient s identification at the point of care Remove problematic, unreliable laser printing to print specimen labels Mobilise the clinician to drive greater efficiency and improved patient care Provision of a fully integrated middleware solution with automatic PAS look up and printing of specimen labels at the patient s bedside Seamless link with Medway PAS system Provision of a fully compliant 2D DataMatrix barcode solution incorporated on specimen labels Provision of 60 x Zebra HC100 WLAN wristband printers Provision of 90 x Zebra G Series WLAN GX430T thermal printers Provision of 45 x Honeywell Xenon 1900SFH cordless Bluetooth barcode scanners Fully maintained and supported solution via Managed Service contract What the trust said It took the trust a while to engage with Dakota but since we have, their expertise on mobility solutions, barcode symbology and integration with hospital systems has proved invaluable. Their responsive approach, industry knowledge and provision of credible solutions mean I would have no hesitation in recommending Dakota to other trusts looking to deploy similar applications. Senior IMandT Project Manager Aintree University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children Deployment of a fully compliant Positive Patient Identification system incorporating patient wristbands Integration with the trusts isoft ipm Patient Administration System (PAS) via Dakota PASidMED solution Provision of Zebra HC100 wristband printers On-going support and maintenance of all deployed hardware/middleware. Case Study What the trust said CRS Project Manager at Great Ormond St Meredith Mora also commented; The trust undertook a comprehensive evaluation process as we do with all projects and it was quickly evident Dakota understood the challenges we faced as an organisation. Dakota impressed with their knowledge, integration expertise and flexible approach proposing a credible printing solution which meant Great Ormond St rolled out a system that was NPSA compliant, yet easy for staff to operate. I would have no hesitation in recommending Dakota to other trusts looking to deploy print solutions integrating with their hospital systems. Meredith Mora, CRS Project Manager Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children Mobile Technology gives nurses more time to care The project Working together, Tactix4, MioCARE and Dakota are offering a cost effective way to ensure healthcare professionals are able to deliver high quality care. The solution means nurses are able to make decisions at the bedside without the worry of filling out paper work and then in-putting the information on hospital IT Systems at a later time in the day. It brings flexibility previously unattainable through desktop or paper administration. The software Open source nursing electronic observation solution Allows nurses to record patient observations at the bedside Replicates patient charts in electronic format and calculates the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) Compliant with national standards for nursing observations and easily configured to fit healthcare organisations needs King s College Hospital The tablets (MioCARE A105) Fully wipe-able with commonly used disinfectants Security enabled, ensuring accountability, accuracy and data protection Integrated 2D barcode reader Ergonomic, portable and lightweight Long battery life, practical for long shifts Specialism of device reduces risk of theft associated with consumer tablets We are delighted that nurses at King s are able to get the full benefits of this new healthcare focused mobile technology. The solution really makes a difference, giving nurses the time to do what they love doing, caring for patient, while also saving the NHS money. We would urge nurses to get in touch with us if they want support in applying for the Nurse Technology Fund Matthew Wallis, UK Manager, MioCARE Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Brighton rolls out tablet PC based electronic patient record solution The project The EPR solution has begun with the Trust A& Departments, the mobile solution being first used in an Outpatient setting then to follow with Inpatients Mobile technology is being deployed in the ward and clinic areas primarily to bring recording of the medical records to the bedside and improve the working lives of clinicians. The lack of any bedside space in Outpatients and Inpatients departments demanded a flexible mobile solution The tablets will also be used for prescription rounds and the technology will be integrated with medication carts. The project is built around the Motion C5t tablet PC, running Alert Life Sciences EPR Software. Clinicians will have a set of applications immediately on hand via the Motion tablet, based on comprehensive, up to date record on each of their patients. Clinicians do not waste time looking for the notes and patient information is easily shared, reviewed and used for joint decision making rather than being used in isolation. The mobility of the tablet PC will enable fast and timely responses at the bedside, improving productivity and quality of care.
