We operate an effi cient Medical Centre featuring an atmosphere of well-being, respect and mutual trust. We guarantee that our patients will receive professional and individual medical care. We organize our internal procedures both for and together with our patients. As physicians, nurses, engineers and administrative staff of the hospital, we strive to be among the best. 3 3 Klinikum Chemnitz Modern - Open - Efficient The Klinikum Chemnitz ggmbh, the regional health centre, is an Academic Teaching Hospital and one of the largest hospitals in Germany. The medical and scientific expertise exceeds by far the role of a main regional hospital. In recent past, efficiency and specialization have also been further increased. This has been achieved by the merging of clinics and specialist departments into Treatment Centres and Centres of Excellence. We have combined the expert knowledge of our physicians with the latest methods and techniques into a complex and comprehensive expertise in diagnostics, treatment and patient care. The in-stay and treatment conditions are modern and comfortable. Various institutes (e.g. genetics, microbiology, pathology, etc.), outpatient departments and special consultations provide services for other hospitals in the region and for patients, which go even beyond their actual stay in hospital. Alternative methods of treatment, such as traditional Chinese medicine, etc., rehabilitation programs and occupational rehabilitation schemes complement our wide range of services. The Klinikum Chemnitz ggmbh is a member of the German Network of Health Promoting Hospitals and is involved in a large number of other quality assurance projects. The Klinikum Chemnitz ggmbh is a centre for telemedicine. This refers to both supraregional networking and cooperation in telematics and the assessment of results, and development and initial use of telemedical products, such as cardiac event recorders or cardiotocography. We are proud of being the first hospital in Germany, that, in the year 2000, was accredited in accordance with the standards of the Joint Commission International based in Chicago, USA. 4 The Organization Hospital Sites The nonprofi t organization (ggmbh) Klinikum Chemnitz ggmbh was established as a clinical centre in 1994 from the former Chemnitz municipal hospitals Staedtische Kliniken Chemnitz. With 1,720 beds it is one of the largest hospitals in Germany, and with approximately 3,500 employees, including those of our subsidiaries, is also one of the largest employers in the region. Our medical treatment is carried out at three hospital sites within the city of Chemnitz. The former hospital buildings have all been completely modernized and spaciously extended by the addition of new buildings. A modern hospital building in the Flemmingstrasse is now under construction and will become the new landmark in the northwest of Chemnitz. 4 Clinics and Medical Services Almost all medical specialties are to be found within the hospitals and clinics belonging to the Klinikum Chemnitz ggmbh. Central facilities provide services to the individual hospital sites. Independent outpatient departments are associated with the Klinikum Chemnitz ggmbh. Training The Klinikum Chemnitz is an academic teaching hospital of the Universities of Leipzig and Dresden. Specialists are trained in the hospital s Medical College. Ongoing in-service training and other education and training are provided by the in-house Training Centre. Partners Many tasks can only be performed with the help of reliable external partners. Our partners are involved in medical research, training, and in rendering social and economic services. There is also a close working relationship with patients organizations and self-help groups. All hospitals belonging to the Klinikum Chemnitz ggmbh have their own independent Patient Advocates who look after the interests of our patients. Health Care The Klinikum Chemnitz ggmbh has taken part in a European WHO project. It was selected as a pilot hospital, and today it belongs to the Network of Health Promoting Hospitals. The Klinikum Chemnitz is also involved in numerous other activities in the fi eld of health care.

The sole shareholder of the organization is the City of Chemnitz. Mr. Detlef Nonnen, in his function as City Treasurer, is the Chairman of the Supervisory Board. The Supervisory Board and the Representatives Assembly function as hospital control bodies. 8 We Pursue a Common Goal 8 The day-to-day work of our employees characterizes our hospitals and clinics. Almost 400 physicians, 1,200 nurses, about 750 therapists and technicians, and a further employees in the economic and administrative departments daily re-define the high level of quality of the treatment. Therefore our organization promotes personal commitment and a responsible way of thinking and decision-making. Subject-related work groups have been established to exchange experiences and transfer knowledge between the various clinics and departments. Every member of staff has the opportunity to attend advanced training schemes and to enhance their strong points. Our Medical Training Centre offers in-service training courses on medical or interdisciplinary subjects to the members of all occupational groups. The social benefits for current and former employees of the Klinikum Chemnitz are also worth noting. To mention just a few, we provide various types of old age and survivors social security schemes, partial retirement under the German Partial Retirement Act (ATG), and exemplary care for our retired employees. Working mothers know that their children are well looked after in the hospital s own kindergarten Sonnenkinder. The Klinikum Chemnitz arranges project-based visits and carries out information activities for school classes, to promote the pupils health consciousness, reduce their fears when they come into contact with a hospital, and to build the public s confidence in the regional health facility. Opening days, a wellequipped specialist and patient library and the Internet meeting point provide a cultural complement to the rationality of the hospital. Our patients are our guests and, at the same time, our customers, on whose requirements we orientate our technical competence, efficiency and teamwork skills. In addition to the relief and cure of their complaints, every guest in our clinics also looks for confidence, safety and security. 9 9 Complex Treatment of Malignant Brain Tumours Using navigation-based radical microsurgery, obligatory postoperative radiation therapy with a linear accelerator, chemotherapy with ACNU and Temodal. The treatment of malignant brain tumours is a big challenge to all clinics or departments involved in the therapy. It is therefore an important precondition to ensure that the life of the patient and his family is dominated as little as possible by the illness, the stays in hospital are kept as short as possible, and as many therapy steps as possible are carried out as outpatient therapy. There was an improvement in the quality of life alone, because the patients lived with their families and could take an active part in the course of treatment by attending a tight programme of aftercare. The quality of survival of selected patients with glioblastomas has been improved and appears to be more favourable for the population. This is especially applicable to patients with cerebral metastases, some of whom with melanomas, and it is thankfully accepted by all patients and relatives alike. For more than 20 years, in Chemnitz, operations on old malignant tumours of the brain have been carried out as radical as possible, using microscope and ultrasound, and since 1994 such operations have been controlled by computerized neuronavigation. In 500 patients with glioblastomas, malignant gliomas and brain metastases, who were operated on with navigation and obligatory use of a microscope, all of them also underwent postoperative radiation, if their clinical condition permitted it and if they showed no postoperative complications. Special importance has been attached to the early start of the outpatient radiation therapy, which is carried out whilst the patients remain in their domestic environment. All appropriate patients, from the various partners, underwent chemotherapy with ACNU or with Temodal, which was started in the Radiation Oncology Clinic and continued in the branch departments. At the end of the radiation therapy the chemotherapy for all patients was either carried out or continued in the outpatients department.

In 2006, we purchased a high-end computed tomography (CT) system with 40-slice technology from Siemens. With this high performance CT scanner it is not only possible to perform the well known computed tomographic scanning of organs and body regions in the advanced high resolution technology, but, because of the very short examination time, all organs and their motion, including the heart, can be very precisely displayed. Special fi lters and processing modalities allow us, for example, to display the periphery of the vascular system, which often saves angiography and thus the patient s exposure to potentially harmful radiation. Surfaces of organs, bones and also the skin contours can be reconstructed true in every detail and that is what is of very great interest for partial resections in organ operations or plastic surgery. Even the beating heart itself can be precisely displayed, down to the display of the coronary vessels, whereby not only the calcium deposits, but also stenoses caused by non-calcifi ed plaques, can be recognized. The around the clock availability of this diagnostic equipment makes it possible, especially in polytraumatized and most severely ill patients, to carry out a differentiated diagnostic clarifi cation in the shortest possible examination time.

With a total of more than hectares of parks and woodland we are amongst the frontrunners of all the cities in Saxony. Chemnitz is one of Germany s foremost locations for industry and technology and proudly looks back on a history of innovation in mechanical engineering and the machine tool, textile and automotive industries. After restructuring, old-established companies in the technology industry are able to further develop and export their products and services all over the world. Siemens and Volkswagen are just a couple of the well known names amongst the major investors who have returned to Chemnitz. Its location in the middle of Central Europe makes Chemnitz a signifi cant junction between the established market economies of the European Union and the developing economies in Eastern Europe. Prague is less than two hours away by car... The city offers a modern infrastructure with regard to the technical sector (telecommunications, IT services, etc.) and has excellent interconnecting facilities. The international airports of Leipzig and Dresden are about an hour s travelling time away from Chemnitz. The motorways A4 and A72 connect Chemnitz via the A13 to Berlin, the A5 to Frankfurt, the A9 to Nuremberg, or the A93 to Regensburg and Munich. Excellent inner-city road and rail networks and inter-city train connections make the location easily accessible from near and far alike.
