4 Description The Clinical Practice Preceptorship first-year medical student requirement for FCM 1 where the student is placed in a local physician s office to experience clinical medicine firsthand. The student visits the preceptor for six half days in the academic year. Completes six online visit evaluations, and is in turn evaluated by the physician preceptor. Completes six history skills, one at each visit. Practice taking vital signs at each visit if possible. Completes an HPI and a personally-selected learning objective in the fall, and a complete HPI in the spring
5 Objectives 1 The student will: Be able demonstrate medical knowledge by describing relevance of selected basic sciences concepts to the practice of clinical medicine.
6 Objective 2 Be able to demonstrate and utilize interpersonal and communication skills by: Describing characteristics of an effective medical interview Describing how health care decisions are influenced by characteristics of the patient. Discussing techniques for establishing patient rapport.
7 Objective 3 Be able to discuss and embody professionalism by: Explaining how a patient s value system and financial resources impact a clinical decision. Explaining the importance of patient confidentiality. Describing resources available for office-based learning. Following dress code Being punctual and respectful to patient and families Demonstrating commitment to independent learning Respecting other health care providers and staff
8 Objective 4 Be able to understand patient care by: Describing role of at least one non-physician provider. Describing the importance of physician/patient negotiation. Explaining principles of informed consent. Example: PSA testing, laceration repair

10 Types of Practices Assignments made with focus on primary care and outpatient medicine, but experiences vary. Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Peds OB, GI, ENT, ER, Sports Medicine, etc Not available: Psych, Path, Rad, Plastics Outpatient (clinic), Inpatient (hospital), home visits, nursing homes, emergency rooms Mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays, academic breaks
11 Mandatory Events and Dates Orientation Turn in HIPAA Sheets by 5pm 8.17 in Academic Affairs Office HIPAA Training 12pm today Sign-up for CPP preferences TODAY the FCM1 homepage Intro to History and PE session will be on Surgery Scrub Video Session (all students) OR Training (Surgery students only)-tba 6 visits on 6 different days: a single visit should be completed prior to each of the following dates: 10.3, 11.14, 12.11, 1.23, 2.20, 3.27 (but they can be done earlier) Session 5: be prepared to discuss examples of professionalism you saw complete History, General Appearance and Vital signs to assigned faculty All on-line reports due by , 11:59 PM A visit is usually equal to one half-day clinic Report should be done right after the visit.

13 Fall Write-up and Presentation Write-up should include a Chief Complaint and an HPI from a patient with your preceptor. it to your group instructor prior to the date and bring two hard copies to the session- one for you and one for your faculty. Locate an example of professionalism that you have witnessed in your visits and be prepared to speak on the experience.
14 Optional Events More than 6 visits Recommendation: Try to work ahead and get in your visits early in case you can t meet with your preceptor during your tight time schedule. eg. Maybe meet with them over Thanksgiving week or over the break a few times to get to get your requirements out of the way.
15 Grades towards FCM Satisfactory Minimum of 6 visits reported by deadline and satisfactory grade from preceptor Skills card completed Written assignments and presentations turned in on time Unsatisfactory Less than six visits reported by deadline or unsatisfactory grade from preceptor Failure to complete skill card, written assignments, or presentations

17 Frequently asked questions Can I pick a doctor or specialty? You can indicate a preference during sign-up. However the selection of a specialty or physician is done based upon many factors and availability. Do to limited numbers, a student can only work with his or her assigned faculty.
18 Frequently asked questions Can I see a surgery/delivery with my doctor? Yes, if the physician agrees. There are special materials to prior to the event- See CPP page Surgery students will need to take an operating room orientation class **You do not see much during surgeries.

20 Frequently asked questions Can I drop the CPP? No. It is a component of FCM. You must drop the FCM course to be removed from CPP. Remediation This will be decided on an individual basis depending on what component was not successfully completed.
21 Frequently asked questions I am having trouble reaching my physician. What should I do? Phone!!!: Try calling the MD, or leave a message with the MD s nurse or office manager. Most MD s are too busy to respond to If you are getting nowhere after 2 weeks, Dr. Woodward ASAP!!!!
22 Everyone will be assigned a primary preceptor. This may be an MD or a resident. One may have a resident as a back-up preceptor if needed in special circumstances.
23 Frequently asked questions I am having trouble finding time to meet with my physician because of schedule conflicts. What should I do? Check to see if the MD has weekend, evening hours or does hospital/nursing home rounds, home visits, etc Schedule visits during your academic vacations: fall, winter, spring I do not encourage you to miss classes or labs.
24 Frequently asked questions I spent a lot of hours on a Saturday with my preceptor. How many hours counts towards a visit? A minimum of 3 hours is required for a visit. This example could be 2 visits if you worked 3 hours in the am and 3 hours in the pm and saw different patients. *** You must submit one report for each visit you wish to get credit for.
25 Special Notes Volunteer Faculty Professionalism KNOW THE WEBSITE MATERIAL Plan visits far ahead Doctors are people too and may be sick or on vacation. OBs and surgeons frequently have upperclassmen so don t wait until the last minute to schedule visits. They may not let you.
