This session will highlight the dangers, as well as, the consequences of distracted and drug-impaired driving and offers strategies to help address these concerns in your workplace. Workshop Leader: Constable Ron Kennedy Cst. Ron Kennedy has been a member of Charlottetown Police Services for approximately 18 years. Cst. Kennedy is currently in the position of Traffic Coordinator and is the Senior Collision Reconstructionist. During his career, Cst. Kennedy has been involved in numerous types of investigations including impaired driving investigations. Cst. Kennedy is a senior breathalyzer technician and frequently instructs at the Atlantic Police Academy. Cst. 2 WCB 2016 Workplace Health & Safety Conference Return to Work An Employer s Guide Return to Work (RTW) programs benefit the injured or ill worker and the employer. A well-defined RTW program provides the framework to create successful, individual RTW plans to assist injured or ill workers to safely return to work as they are recovering from their injury or illness. This will be an introductory look at How to Develop a RTW program, Implementation of your RTW program and Evaluation of your RTW program. Workshop Leader: Kelly Heydens Kelly is the Return to Work Coordinator for the Workers Compensation Board of Prince Edward Island, and has been in this role for five years. Kelly has been involved in the compensation system for over 17 years, having worked in a variety of roles at the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario. Kelly has a strong commitment to assisting both workers and employers during the return to work process. Electrical Hazards in the Workplace We all use electricity in the workplace. Electrical hazards, however, can be the cause of significant injuries. This presentation will discuss the identification of these often unnoticed hazards. Compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Electrical Regulations, as they pertain to workplaces, will also be discussed. What can you do during your workplace inspections to ensure that workers are safe from electrical hazards? Workshop Leader: Jared MacKinnon Jared has been with Maritime Electric for about 5 years working in their Health, Safety and Environment Department. Jared manages the company s HSE Management System which is based on the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001:2007 Occupational Health & Safety Management System and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2004 Environmental Management System Standards. Mental Health in the Workplace: Detecting Problems and Providing Support This workshop will teach participants how to sensitively and effectively support someone experiencing a mental health problem in the workplace. Symptoms of common mental health issues, intervention strategies, preventative measures and self care will be discussed. By taking steps to diminish stigma, recognizing and responding appropriately to early warning signs, and offering accessible sources for professional help, we can work together to ensure a more psychologically healthy work environment for all. Workshop Leader: Elizabeth Eldridge Elizabeth is an Accredited Music Therapist and proprietor of Arpeggio Music Therapy, which provides music therapy services throughout New Brunswick. In addition to clinical work in psychiatric rehabilitation and long-term care settings, Elizabeth facilitates Mental Health First Aid training sessions. She is provincial representative for the Atlantic Association for Music Therapy, clinical internship supervisor and Chair of Operations for the Canadian Association for Music Therapy, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick. Workshop Leaders: Jim McInnis and Sandy Clarke Jim is a graduate of the Ryerson Polytechnic University Occupational Health and Safety program. He holds the professional designation of Canadian Registered Safety professional. Jim has been an Occupational Health and Safety officer with the Workers Compensation Board of PEI for 18 years. Sandy is a graduate of DalTech, Technical University of Nova Scotia, Occupational Health and Safety program and holds the professional designation of Canadian Registered Safety professional. Sandy has been an Occupational Health and Safety Officer with the Workers Compensation Board of PEI for 15 years working in the Western district of PEI. It Starts From the Top... Workshop Leader: David Powers David is presently employed as the Director of Health, Safety & Environment for Oxford Frozen Foods Limited, charged with developing, implementing and maintaining a formal HSE program for an organization which has agricultural and processing operations in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and the state of Maine. Prior to joining Oxford, David was a HSE manager for three facilities with the Powertrain Division of Magna International in Toronto. Before that, he spent a year with Caterpillar in Toronto and began his HSE career with a small, private recycling company near Oshawa, Ontario. Building a Culture of Helpfulness in the Workplace Encouraging helping behaviours in the work place can have a significant effect on a business s success not just from a financial standpoint but also in terms of innovation, employee satisfaction, and the ability to solve complex problems. This session will cover the what, why, and how of the culture of helpfulness and provide practical strategies to bring back to the workplace. Workshop Leader: Chris Johnston Chris Johnston is an Occupational Therapist and the Regional Manager for the CBI Health Centres in Prince Edward Island. WHMIS WCB Workplace Health & Safety Conference Supervising Young Workers: Is it really that important? You'll know how important supervision is once you've listened to David's story. David was a happy, healthy 16-year old when he started a great summer job. He had no idea that a late night task taking out the trash would change his life. Nobody discussed the hazards, and nobody was supervising when David went out the door that night. Come hear David's compelling story. Be prepared for a little group work, developing and sharing young worker tips for use in your own workplace. Workshop Leaders: David Collins David has been a long-time advocate for young worker safety since being seriously injured at work as a high school student. His determination and positive attitude have served him well while learning to cope with paralysis. Now 29, David lives in Charlottetown and is a Marketing Coordinator with Invesco Canada Ltd. For five years he co-chaired Invesco's employee charity committee, helping to raise money for local charities. David is a part-time student at UPEI, finishing up the final courses of a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. WHMIS is changing and workplaces need to plan for WHMIS 2015 changes based on the GHS (The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals). Learn how WHMIS will change based on the new regulations. Workshop Leader: Canadian Centre for Occupational Health & Safety (CCOHS) Representative CCOHS is Canada's National Resource for the Advancement of Workplace Health and Safety. They promote workplace health and safety, and encourage attitudes and methods that will lead to improved worker physical and mental health, through a wide range of products and services. Medical and Occupational Disease Surveillance This session will provide medical insight into approaches to identify and prevent occupational disease and injury. Workshop Leader: Dr. Steve O Brien Dr. O Brien received his M.D at Dalhousie University and practiced Family Medicine for 28 years. In 2005, he was a member of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and in 2006 he became a Certified Independent Medical Examiner. 5 Global Workforce on PEI: Improving cross-cultural communication and inclusion The PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada (PEIANC), the Island s largest immigrant settlement agency, assists new immigrants and refugees with settling and integrating into Canadian society by providing programs, services, resources, and community connections. This presentation will focus on immigration on PEI, the change in PEI s population, who is coming here and the importance of the retention of immigrants to our Island. The session will also focus on the challenges newcomers face in coming to Canada and in the workplace, employers rights and responsibilities, and how understanding cultural differences and communication styles can greatly improve interactions. Workshop Leaders: Amy MacLean and Suna Houghton Amy MacLean is an Employment Counsellor for the Employment Assistance Service (EAS) at the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada (PEIANC). Amy has her B.A. in Psychology as well as the Resume and Job Search Coach Certificate from the Winnipeg Transitions Center. She has worked in counseling roles for over ten years and has been working as an employment counselor with the PEIANC since Amy is passionate about assisting newcomers to reach their professional goals in Canada. Suna Houghton works as a multicultural educator at the PEIANC. After completing her B.Ed. at McGill University, she taught international and Canadian students in Lennoxville, Quebec for several years. Upon returning to PEI, she held a number of contracts at the University of PEI while working on her M.Ed. Her work at the Newcomers Association brings her into contact with people from all over the world which she enjoys immensely. Nutrition Break and Draw for the ipad mini! 2:45 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Key Note Speaker - Heather Moyse 3:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Three-time Olympian Three-time Olympian Heather Moyse is a multi-sport athlete and highly respected motivational speaker. She s competed internationally in track cycling, rugby and boblsleigh, in which she and her teammate Kaillie Humphries won gold medals at the 2010 Vancouver and 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games. Having overcome multiple, career-threatening injuries, Heather uses her personal experience and professional training as an occupational therapist to encourage and inspire others to embrace challenges and face adversity head-on, believe in the possibilities of achieving their dreams, and to step outside of their comfort zones in order to discover and maximize their potential, whether in sport, business, or life. A lifelong humanitarian, Heather donates her time and talent to many community events and national charities, earning her the Order of PEI, the Queen s Jubilee Medal, and the Randy Starkman Olympian Humanitarian Award.
