EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS AND TRAINING: Required: Graduate of an accredited school or training program for Radiologic Technologists. Registered by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) including MRI certification (MR). Incumbent will be required to demonstrate competence in the performance of duties specific to the age groups of the patients for whom s/he will be assigned. At least 2 years of supervisory experience required. Preferred: BS Degree, Multi-modality experience preferred. Experience with operating a Mobile MRI service and stand-alone Imaging Centers preferred. EXPERIENCE: Requires a minimum of 5 years of MRI experience. Demonstrated supervisory and administrative ability. Given training and on-the-job experience, incumbent should be proficient in the basic aspects of the job within 3 months. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Supervises: MRI Technologists and MRI support staff Reports To: Administrative Director COMMUNICATIONS: Requires frequent communications with departmental personnel, physicians and patients. Routine communications with other hospital personnel providing services in support of the department. Purpose includes giving and receiving information, explaining services, rules or procedures, or
2 providing instructions or directives regarding policies or standards of care. Involves authority to make decisions and give advice. Requires extensive communication skills, tact and discretion in order to obtain cooperation and understanding, discuss and resolve problems, make recommendations and maintain goodwill. WORKING HOURS AND OVERTIME STATUS: Normally works 7:30am-4:00pm, Monday-Friday. May be required to work alternate schedules or additional hours as the workload demands. Classified as non-exempt for purposes of overtime. DRESS POLICY: Hospital approved scrubs. Sturdy closed-toe shoes with non-slip sole. Dosimetry badge. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Usually works in light and temperature controlled environment. Some exposure to somewhat unpleasant odors and fumes. Required to work around radiation producing equipment on a constant basis. Slight potential exposure to air and blood borne pathogens when assisting Technologists. Occasionally exposed to combative patient. WORK AIDS: Radiographic equipment and supplies. Patient records. Employee records. Administrative supplies, records and reports. X-rays. EXPOSURE DETERMINATION: OSHA requires an exposure determination concerning which employees may incur occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. The exposure determination is made without regard to the use of personal protective equipment (i.e. employees are considered to be exposed even if they wear personal protective equipment.) This exposure determination is required to list all job classifications in which all employees may be expected to incur such occupational exposure, regardless of frequency. It is the department s responsibility to perform exposure determination for all employees and to list job classifications in one of three categories. Category 1 includes employees who are routinely exposed to blood borne pathogens Category 2 includes employees who are not usually exposed, but for whom contact with infectious materials can be reasonably anticipated during the course of their duties. Category 3 is for employees who are not exposed to infectious materials during the normal operations of their job duties. This job is rated as a category 1 (1, 2, or 3). BIOHAZARDOUS DRUGS: As a health care facility which dispenses drugs, some of which have been identified as hazardous by NIOSH, our goal is to provide training and where necessary, personal protective equipment (PPE) to insure employee safety. *See list of hazardous drugs in Pharmacy Policy Manual, Chemotherapy Preparation section. Warning labels will be used to identify drugs requiring special handling or waste disposal procedures. It is the department s responsibility to train in safe handling and disposal. It is the employee s responsibility to follow policies and procedures, and to report situations and/or make recommendations to improve safety. It is also the department s responsibility to perform exposure determination for all employees and to list job classifications in one of three categories. Category 1 includes employees who are routinely exposed to hazardous drugs. Category 2 includes employees who are not usually exposed, but for whom contact with hazardous drugs can be reasonably anticipated during the course of their duties. Category 3 is for employees who are not exposed to hazardous drugs during the normal operations of their job duties. This job is rated as a category 3 (1, 2, or 3).
3 KEY ELEMENTS: MRI SUPERVISOR The overall average first time acceptance rate for the MRI section is 96-98% for those turned into Radiologist. Ensures that designated procedures, in preparation for and during exams/procedures are effectively applied for MRI examinations, with no more than 3-6 noted exceptions on average per assigned employee, and no exceptions resulting in the need for medical intervention. Stays within 5% of approved budget for areas of responsibility. Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory and policy requirements pertaining to assigned financial, operational and human resources responsibilities, with no more than 1-2 noted exceptions, and with no litigation or sanctions resulting in adverse outcomes for the hospital. Ensures section of oversight obtains / maintains ACR accreditation. JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES 1. Directs the administrative operations of the MRI section under the general direction of the Imaging Director. - Establishes and implements new/revised policies, procedures and methods for section - Responsible for compliance with TJC and other regulatory requirements for section - Oversees quality assurance activities for the section - Evaluates new products, services and equipment a. Provides timely input into budget planning process for equipment, supplies and staffing, ensuring that requests are properly substantiated, reflect thorough research and are cost effective. b. Routinely establishes or revises methods and procedures as needed to stay current with the state-of-the-art and with regulatory requirements, and so that activities can be accomplished in less time, with less effort, or with better quality, without prompting. c. Ensures that TJC and other regulatory requirements are met on an on-going basis. d. Ensures compliance with an approved quality assurance program, monitoring outcomes, and following through as warranted to correct deficiencies and improve quality of services rendered. e. Stays abreast of new developments in the field, and routinely evaluates new products, services and equipment, making budget recommendations for their incorporation where applicable and feasible. 2. Coordinates and manages the supply and equipment needs for the section. - Procures and controls the use of supplies - Oversees the maintenance and servicing of equipment a. Ensures that par levels of routinely used supplies are kept on hand, so that delays do not occur due to depletion.
4 b. Routinely monitors use and control of supplies to identify waste, misuse and/or theft. c. Ensures that established preventive maintenance schedules are accomplished on assigned equipment, and that terms of service agreements are met. d. Reports malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate service vendor with 30 minutes of notification, following through as needed to ensure equipment is serviced as quickly as possible. e. Accomplishes quality control procedures of equipment in accordance with procedure and time frames. 3. Directs assigned personnel with the knowledge and approval of the Director. - Interviews, hires, orients, and trains assigned employees - Implements and maintains continuing education program for staff - Prepares work schedules and approves time off - Assigns and checks work results for quality, accuracy and timeliness - Investigates complaints, errors and other operational problems, and takes corrective action - Develops employee performance capabilities, and conducts employee performance reviews - Counsel employees with performance or behavioral problems - Makes recommendations regarding disciplinary actions, transfers and promotions a. Follows hospital policies when hiring new employees, and ensures that employees meet minimum requirements for the position as outlined in the job description. b. Provides for the orientation and on-going training of assigned personnel, ensuring that documentation systems are established and maintained, so that status, progress and participation can be easily monitored. c. Routinely provides for "on-the-spot" in-services for assigned staff when minor deficiencies are observed, so that problems do not persist or grow worse. d. Maintains an in-service system to address new/revised policies, procedures, equipment, techniques and advances. e. Contributes to the professional development of assigned personnel, by observing work, tracking performance indicators, answering questions, explaining proper procedures, demonstrating techniques, and intervening as warranted to correct deficiencies or help resolve problems. f. Continuously assesses employee performance, documenting significant achievements and/or deficiencies, and coaching or counseling, as appropriate, to achieve maximum employee satisfaction and performance. g. Ensures that assigned staff complies with hospital and departmental policies, providing timely notification, interpretation and instruction, and as appropriate, recommending disciplinary action. h. Ensures the quality and timeliness of services provided by assigned personnel, intervening as appropriate to resolve problems or correct deficiencies. i. Prepares a timely and substantiated performance review for each assigned employee in accordance with procedure and guidelines, ensuring that action plans are made to improve performance weaknesses, that plans are made for future activities and for personal development, and that frequent on-going performance related discussions are evident in the supporting documentation. j. Effectively resolves staffing problems due to absences or fluctuations in workload, so that significant delays in service do not occur.

Communicates, coordinates and collaborates with other personnel and physicians. - Coordinates work activities with other departments, personnel, medical staff and outside resources - Liaison between patients, families and physicians - Keeps employees informed of departmental and hospital activities and announcements a. Appropriately coordinates, or collaborates on the provision of care with physicians, patient care providers and departmental staff, ensuring that communications are professional, clear and timely. b. Ensures that questions and concerns expressed by patients or families are relayed to appropriate physician or care providers, following through as warranted to ensure that patient rights are protected, and that they are satisfied with the action taken. c. Keeps employees well informed with regard to hospital or departmental activities, announcements or changes that affect them, as soon as possible after the information is available. 5. Produces routine exams/images on inpatients and outpatients. - Obtains history and/or examination data and evaluates for contraindicating conditions - Reviews radiologist's report - Administers contrasts by direct injection or IV line - Administers medications under direct supervision of physician - Performs venipuncture - Applies shielding, supportive and immobilization devices and equipment - Adjusts and controls equipment for successfully obtaining diagnostic MRI exams - Reviews images for clinically acceptable results and releases patients - Prepares room for all exams by gathering and setting up supplies and instruments a. Administers the correct procedure to the correct patient, without noted exception. b. Ensures that an appropriate history and/or examination data is taken, and that contraindicating conditions are identified and communicated to the radiologist prior to the initiation of the procedure. c. Selects and applies appropriate procedures, techniques and communications based on the age and developmental status of patients. d. Follows established procedures and techniques for the administration of contrasts media. e. Follows established procedures and techniques for the administration of medications, needle localizations, the drawing of blood and other invasive procedures. f. Ensures that patient positioning and shielding techniques are properly employed based on the procedure. g. Effectively adjusts and controls equipment to produce quality images. h. Observes patient condition and properly evaluates to determine situations when Physician intervention is necessary. i. Promptly and appropriately responds in accordance with procedure or established protocol in emergency or STAT situations. j. Procures and prepares required equipment and supplies quickly and without assistance to ensure all exams can be completed without interruption.
6 6. Provides emotional support, comfort, general assistance and information to patients. a. Patiently and clearly explains purpose and nature of exam/procedure to patient prior to administration, when possible, so as to minimize anxiety and facilitate cooperation. b. Ensures that patient questions and concerns are satisfactorily addressed, notifying physician when this cannot be accomplished, prior to the initiation of the procedure. c. Ensures patient's privacy, comfort and hygiene needs are accommodated. d. Ensures preparatory instructions are clearly communicated to outpatients on a timely basis, so procedures are not delayed due to inadequate or untimely preparation. 7. Coordinates or collaborates with physicians and nursing staff. a. Follows attending physician's instructions when assisting with procedures and exams. b. Ensures that any preparatory instructions are relayed to nursing staff for inpatients and outpatients on a timely basis, so that procedures are not delayed due to inadequate or untimely preparation. c. Keeps appropriate physician or radiologist advised on all aspects of care provided to their patients, ensuring prompt notification when problems or potential problems arise. d. Appropriately coordinates/collaborates on the provision of care with the physicians, patient care providers and fellow staff, ensuring communications are clear and continuous and that time factors are adequately addresses. 8. Maintains equipment. a. Ensures that equipment is fully operational prior to each day's use. b. Performs minor repairs and calibrations, so that outside service calls are avoided for adjustments that are within the scope of the Technologist's ability to handle. c. Maintains equipment in accordance with procedure and time frames, so that no damage or undue wear and tear occurs due to failure to comply. d. Reviews and immediately reports to appropriate person any problems detected with exam protocols. 9. Performs clerical, PACS and transportation duties. - Transports patients as needed - As needed, prepares and maintains patient files - As needed, prepares or maintains logs, records and requisitions - Prints exams to be mailed - Enters exams into the computer - Selects patient from work list - Sends images to PACS after image approval a. Transports patients without incident or accident due to failure to comply with established procedures and safety precautions.
7 b. Follows established procedures in the processing of images, so that procedures do not have to be redone due to incorrect settings. c. Accurately performs required clerical duties, as needed, to ensure timeliness and continuity of services. 10. Documents to the patient record. a. Required documentation regarding patient or procedures is accurate, complete, legible, properly edited and includes appropriate terminology. b. Required documentation is completed before the end of the shift for patients seen during the shift. 11. Keeps procedure rooms stocked and organized, and prepares various contrasts for procedures. a. Ensures that par levels of supplies and linens are maintained on hand so that procedures are not delayed due to depletion. b. Keeps procedure rooms clean and neatly organized on an on-going basis. c. Properly prepares and stores contrast media as needed to maintain par levels. 12. Coordinates and participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities. a. Effectively performs data collection, analysis and idea generation pertinent to the unit's quality assurance and quality improvement programs, on an on-going basis, without prompting. 13. Performs computer functions in accordance with procedures. - Ensures patient "check-in/check-out" - Responsible for entering information on requests - Ensures exams are properly ordered/charged/completed with EMR - Performs other computer functions when necessary. - Communicates exam specifics and patient history through PACS system a. Accurately accesses, enters/revises, prints and saves information using computer(s), without appreciable assistance. 14. Maintains skill competence. a. Remains capable of communicating and demonstrating all skills required for the position. b. Attend at least 90% of scheduled staff meetings, and attends continuing education programs to meet ARRT requirements. 15. Performs miscellaneous duties as needed. - Assists other technologists with difficult procedures - Telephones reports to physician's offices - Answers departmental telephone and schedules appointments - Other duties as assigned a. Willingly lends knowledge and assistance to other departmental employees as needed. b. Accomplishes routine and non-routine miscellaneous duties and assignments in accordance with procedure or instructions, and time frames.
