1 Program Announcement: Clinician Small Grants The WTMTP is a project of the American Music Therapy Association
2 Wilson Trust Music Therapy Project Program Announcement: Clinician Small Grants Background: The Wilson Trust Music Therapy Project is based on a $400,000 legacy gift given to the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) by the Eleanor and Raymond Wilson Charitable Trust to expand music therapy services in the Puget Sound region of Washington State. Mrs. Eleanor Wilson was a passionate advocate for music and the environment. The Wilsons resided in the Puget Sound region and supported numerous music and arts programs in the greater Seattle area. Purpose: The purpose of the Wilson Trust Music Therapy Project (WTMTP) Program Announcement (PA) on Clinician Small Grants (CSG) is to provide small grant funding in support of professional activities of qualified music therapists (a credentialed MT-BC or recognized designations listed with NMTR, CMT, RMT, ACMT) residing in the Puget Sound region. This is a small grant program to increase music therapy services in the community. The program is in keeping with AMTA s mission to advance music therapy services. The grants are intended to help music therapists further their ability to provide services, increase services to clients, improve access to music therapy services, and/or contribute to the development of the profession of music therapy in the Puget Sound region of the State of Washington. Eligibility: Individuals who meet the following three criteria are invited to complete and submit an application: 1) Are current members of AMTA, 2) Are established residents of the Puget Sound region, and 3) Hold MT-BC or are listed on the National Music Therapy Registry. Funding: The maximum amount per application is not to exceed $1,500. The funding amount is intended to provide a boost for practicing therapists so they may contribute to the growth and development of music therapy services in the Puget Sound region. The possibilities are limitless with respect to the types of professional activities that qualify for consideration. These grants may be used for ongoing and/or future projects. Projects may be new or represent a new element of an existing program as of the date of this announcement (August, 2014) to be eligible. Projects must provide music therapy services to individuals residing in the Puget Sound region. Applicants are encouraged to consider projects or activities that reach underserved populations who may benefit from music therapy services. Why a Small Grant Application Process? The small grant application process allows qualified individuals to organize and present their funding proposals for music therapy services. Applications are blind reviewed by a small team consisting of individuals who are members of AMTA and who reside outside of the Puget Sound region. Use of Funds: Applicants must use the funds for direct professional music therapy services. Applicants may also choose to use a portion of the funds for professional activities that help grow music therapy services in the community. This could include (but may not be limited to) activities such as providing practicum supervision in cooperation with faculty at Seattle Pacific University (SPU); making public relations or music therapy awareness presentations to facilities interested in starting music therapy programs; conducting special projects and community work for MTAW; or providing pro bono continuing education opportunities for local therapists. Applicants may also choose to use a portion of the funds for supplies and equipment such as instruments or technology; creation of public relations/marketing materials to promote and advocate for services; funding for expenses to reach (e.g. commuting/transportation) underserved areas; funding to support music therapy presentations at conferences for related 2
3 organizations such as various state allied health conferences, music teacher associations, and other seminars for which there is no compensation provided; as well as other ideas submitted by you to help you reach more people in need of services. The Project Director is willing to field ideas in advance of application submission to ensure they meet the general intent of the program announcement, on request; however, her input may have no bearing on the blind review process and final funding decisions. Method of Application: AMTA members in good standing should submit an application to Barb Else, Project Director for the Wilson Trust Music Therapy Project no later than September 15, 2014 by 5:00 PM Pacific Standard Time. The application addresses two components: 1) The project/activity itself and 2) Importance and Impact Statement A.) For the Project component, the application must include: 1. A description of the professional activity/project (including where the activity/project will occur) 2. The intended outcomes of the activity/project 3. Who will be impacted by this activity/project 4. A basic projected budget stating the total amount of money requested and how it will be spent 5. Which methods will be used to evaluate the activity/project 6. A projected simple timeline of the activity/project (time for planning, implementation, and evaluation should be included) 7. A commitment to report the results of the activity to the Wilson Trust Music Therapy Project Regional Manager within one year of receiving the CSG 8. The resumes or vitae of the applicant(s) participating must be attached to the application. The final report will be shared with the national membership of AMTA through Wilson Trust Updates and possible inclusion in Music Therapy Matters. B) For the Importance and Impact component, the application must include a statement describing the importance and impact of the project with respect to how the project contributes to advancing music therapy services in the Puget Sound region. Applicants may only submit one small grant application. Additionally, as organizations, MTAW and Seattle Pacific University may each submit one small grant application, completed by official representatives of MTAW and SPU faculty, respectively. Previous microloan awardees are eligible to apply again, assuming they meet the other eligibility criteria. Review and Notification: A small review team consisting of individuals outside of the program area and ineligible for this Program Announcement will review, score and rank all applications through a blind review process. The Regional Project Manager will recuse herself from the review process, as necessary, to avoid any conflict of interest. The Review Team may approve the full amount requested, or may approve a lesser amount. If an application is denied, the WTMTP Project Director will send the applicant a letter of denial, stating the reasons for denial. If the application is approved, the WTMTP Project Director will send the applicant a letter of acceptance stating the monetary amount approved, and requirements for reporting the results of the activity. Applicants should consider any impact the money received will have on their taxes. Clinician Small Grant recipients will be notified by October 31, Recipients will be notified via . Checks will be released to successful applicants on or about December 5, Questions?
