1 University as Entrepreneur Kimberly Loui / Arizona State University Nebraska Entrepreneurship Summit 2009 Thank you for that introduction. I m very happy to be in Nebraska today. It s a nice break from the 85 degree weather I left in Phoenix. And it s a privilege to speak to all of you this afternoon. What a group. Clearly there is tremendous interest in and a strong base for entrepreneurship in Nebraska. And while we usually think about individuals as entrepreneurs, what I want to talk about today is an institution, and particularly the UNIVERSITY, as an entrepreneur.

3 The Challenges Before Us Wit the financial crisis, we re in a state, a process of necessary crea5ve destruc5on as Schumpeter would tell us. A lot of ins5tu5ons corporate, civic, educa5onal are facing major restructuring right now. Universi5es are thinking hard about their organiza5on, their effec5veness. This is a huge opportunity and a huge challenge. So, what are the challenges before us? What are they, how do we iden5fy them, and then how do we as universi5es, as organiza5ons, as communi5es and as individuals go about working on them effec5vely? To give you a sense of some of these challenges, we ve put a short video together.

6 How do we grow Arizona s economy? Two of the biggest challenges we have been talking about in Arizona are 1. How do we grow Arizona s economy?

7 How do we make education relevant and meaningful? and 2. How do we provide an educa5on to our students that is relevant for their lives and that will help them have a posi5ve impact on the state?

8 Entrepreneurship education. For us, the answer to both of these ques5ons is: educate students to be entrepreneurs. Provide an entrepreneurial educa5on that emphasizes IMPACT taking the work you do out into the world, crea5ng change; improving communi5es; innova5ng.

9 Part Two Case Study: ASU If you permit me, I d like to share with you a bit about how ASU has tried to do this.

10 Entrepreneurship at ASU entrepreneurship.asu.edu There are of course many different ways that entrepreneurship can be a part of universi5es. And there are different roles for universi5es to play in entrepreneurship.

11 Designing Entrepreneurship Education ASU 101 My Life Venture Nursing Journalism Innovation Space AME PAVE TVC EAP Edson Technopolis Courses Companies Here are some of the things ASU has tried to do. ASU 101 is taken by ASU s 10,000 freshmen their first semester, in classes of less than 19 other students. It s an opportunity to learn about the opportuni5es at ASU, and those include entrepreneurship. It s a way, in a sense, for us to prime the pump. My Life Venture a cer5ficate for undergraduates that MAPS ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS onto their area of interest. Open to anyone. Relevant to anyone. Achievable by anyone. Nursing built into the curriculum of the Master s in Healthcare Innova5on students are required to INNOVATE WITHIN AN EXISTING SYSTEM here, a hospital, but could also be a company, a clinic, an industry Journalism this is about SPACES to play, spaces where entrepreneurship is encouraged, supported, where students have room to innovate in a profession that is rapidly changing (Knight center for digital entrepreneurship AND the New Media Innova5on Lab) Innova5onSpace innova5ons for NEW MARKETS; courses with real impact; experien5al learning; transdisciplinary AME students in this doctoral program are challenged to be entrepreneurial in the way they bring different disciplines together and in the way they bring their work to the public PAVE experienjal learning at the next level; expanding the definijon of entrepreneurs seeing ar5sts as entrepreneurs TVC the Technology Venture Clinic operates out of the law school, engaging graduate and professional students in the commercializa5on of technology and providing legal services to entrepreneurs in the community. Edson empowering students to think of themselves as entrepreneurial; changing the MENTALITY of students; changing their life plans; altering the culture, both at ASU and in Arizona EAP the Entrepreneur Advantage Program engages students who want to test the waters with a pilot project but aren t ready to dive into the deep end with a venture Technopolis building bridges to the community; mentorship; building networks; business formajon When we started thinking about entrepreneurship across the university, we put together a video to help communicate this. One of the things you ll be able to see in this video is the interest, and really the embrace of entrepreneurship by disciplines such as theatre, design and crea5ve wri5ng. They see entrepreneurship at the core of the educa5on they want to provide their students. What I hope you see is that when we say university wide entrepreneurship, we mean it.

13 Innovating as an Institution Community SkySong TecBA Downtown Phoenix Campus VPEP UPSI Biodesign Students GIOS I think that video helps to give you a sense of what we are trying to do in entrepreneurship educa5on. Very quickly, I also want to make the point that pubng in place innova5ve programs requires innova5ng as an ins5tu5on, and we have worked on that a fair amount at ASU. One example of that is SkySong, ASU s Scocsdale Innova5on Center and it is all about networks. SkySong is ASU being an entrepreneur it is a new structure operated out of economic affairs, it is financed in part by the City of Scocsdale, it has academic units as well as private companies, it incubates student companies as well as offers training to community entrepreneurs. It is our physical headquarters for entrepreneurship. Technology Business Accelerators /TecBA: global partnerships to grow companies Technology transfer for all of Tec de Monterrey via SkySong in Scocsdale University Public Schools building new insjtujons in the community Office of the Vice President for Educa5on Partnerships new kinds of collaborajons all the Jme Global Ins5tute of Sustainability a new kind of academic structure that transcends departments and supports transdisciplinary collaborajon Biodesign Ins5tute a new kind of academic structure that works with industry to promote innovajon and posi5ve social impact Downtown Phoenix campus / City of Phoenix bond consciously contribujng to the development of a region, in this case the urban development of Phoenix. Working to promote density in prac5ce, not just in theory. And connecjng the physical campus to the places where real world needs and work exist.

14 Through these endeavors we meet social and economic needs. The University as an Entrepreneur is flexible, reac5ve and predic5ve: ac5vely, consciously responding to society s needs, and shaping society s response. Universi5es have changed a lot over the history of 5me and perhaps we need to keep changing to keep up with the 5mes.

18 Part Three Creating Networks for Entrepreneurial Success So, what do we do with all of this? Well, in part, we try to create networks for entrepreneurial success.

19 Innovation is Generative And the no5on of networks recognizes that: Innova5on is genera5ve. It is not an a ha moment carried forward by a single individual. It is interac5ons between people, with ins5tu5ons, in spaces, over 5me. Innova5on is social! It is interac5ons that generate innova5on.

20 Interactions Innovation When we interact with each other, we change each other. When we interact with ins5tu5ons (like universi5es), we change ins5tu5ons. When we interact with things (like the internet), we change those things. When we interact in places (like ci5es and towns), we change those places. These changes, these genera5ve rela5onships, they lead to innova5on. And innova5on leads to new products, new programs, new services, new en55es. These new en55es help create the condi5ons for future genera5ve rela5onships.

21 You can create networks for innovation. All of us can do this. All of us do do this. We create networks.

22 Actions to Consider Create new industries Engage new people, groups and tools Make sure everybody benefits Team up Connect ventures with universities Design projects, priorities, prizes Regional exchanges Collaborate and mentor And we can do this in small and big ways. Think in terms of new INDUSTRIES, not just new companies or new niches. You might have a vision to create a whole new high-growth industry in Nebraska, for example, like solar or wind. You might engage new people and groups and things - twitter about your new venture, start a facebook group for Nebraska entrepreneurship, collaborate w nonprofits, work with the media; And as you create your network, think about how everybody can benefit, how you might grow your venture and create jobs in your community, how you might offer a new venture space in your building and gain a new network; Find a partner. A recent study showed that partner-run businesses are far more likely to become high-growth ventures Connect your ventures with universities by recruiting new employees, doing joint research, or hiring faculty advisors or directors - these are the primary ways that companies work with MIT, for example Think out of the box. Economic development groups or private philanthropies could think about prizes to spur innovation: create a rural energy grid, give every Nebraskan access to learning technologies, significantly speed freight across the state. You could even increase your network by instituting regional exchanges. Study abroad is great but what about exchanges with other states, like Arizona? All of us can collaborate. And all of us can be mentors to the next generation of entrepreneurs...

Seeing universi5es as entrepreneurs is a new way of looking at educa5on, at businesses, at communi5es. Entrepreneurial educa5on is a way forward toward meaningful collabora5on, toward growth, and toward crea5ng a higher quality of life for the ci5zens of our states. At ASU, our efforts have been rewarding and invigora5ng so far, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share them with you.
