3 Community-engaged research (CEnR) Approach for conducting research in a collaborative way Bidirectional exchange of expertise between academics (scientific experts) and communities/stakeholders (local, cultural, practice experts) that results in informed decision-making about design/conduct/use of research. Broad spectrum: minimal collaboration to equal partners in all aspects of the research 3

5 ARCC 2017 Seed Grant Goals Support community-engaged research partnership and project development Lay foundation for development of communityengaged research projects/proposals for external funding 5
6 2017 Seed Grants- 2 types of awards Research Partnership Development Awards Similar to Partnership Development grants awarded in earlier rounds Up to $5K, Up to 12 months Engaged Research Project Development Awards Up to $20 (max request, not per year), Up to 24 months 6
7 Both types of Awards support the spectrum of engagement May be partnerships or projects to explore community-based participatory research (CBPR) patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) or other types of engaged research collaborations Can be focused on any type of research- e.g. public health/population health research, clinical research, etc. CCH Principles of Engagement: Collaboration, Respect, Equity, Transparency, Impact 7
8 Partnership Development Grants Intended to support newly developing partnerships Possible activities: Relationship building, Exploring areas of shared interest/compatible skills, Engaging addtl. partners Defining roles/responsibilities of partners Developing partnership/engagement infrastructure/processes Building capacity of community and academic partners Planning future collaboration and proposals 8
9 Engaged Research Project Development Grants Intended to support existing partnerships Required activities: Must include some form of data collection or analysis Should also include a focus on strengthening & extending partnership sustainability & capacity 9
10 Engaged Research Project Development Grants- Data collection/analysis Required activities: collaboratively identify, collect, and/or analyze new needs/assets assessment/pilot data or review and interpret existing data or collaboratively develop/pilot test new interventions to inform further study or demonstrate potential impact/capacity for application for external funding 10
11 Engaged Research Project Development Grants Other possible activities (in addition to data collection/analysis) collaboratively design components of engaged research project research questions methodologies recruitment & retention approaches interventions data collection/analysis instruments & protocols dissemination & implementation plans prepare proposals for external research funding partnership building activities to deepen relationships capacity development related to future research 11
12 Eligibility Submit jointly by community-academic partnership Community co-pi (community/faith/public organization) Academic co-pi (Northwestern faculty member- regular or adjunct) Applications involving partners not previously involved in engaged research are prioritized Applicants needing assistance to connect with possible partners should contact ARCC ASAP 12
13 Priorities Academic and/or community Co-PI(s) who haven t had ARCC grant before and/or new to engaged research Address Chicagoland communities experiencing health inequities. (Healthy Chicago 2.0 data) Address 2016 Northwestern Memorial Hospital Priority Health Needs Access to Healthcare Services Chronic Disease (including Obesity & Heart Disease) Injury and Violence Mental Health 13
14 Awards Budget- don t ask for the max if not necessary Not a predetermined number of funded projects (based on submission quality) No matching required 14

18 Budget Must use budget form provided on ARCC website No specific form for budget justification Split budget (proportions determined by team): $ for academic partner/related expenses to academic co-pi $ for community partner/related expenses to community co-pi Possible expenses support partnership meetings support participation of community/academic partners and/or community residents/patients/stakeholders Support staff/time on grant activities (manage meetings/ logistics, collect/analyze data) consult with methodological experts for research design (e.g. biostatistician, qualitative researcher) 18

20 Review Process Review by experienced faculty and partners Criteria: Strong science and strong collaboration Quality and feasibility of community and academic partner engagement Quality and feasibility of proposed activities Potential for future research collaboration and funding Potential for positive community impact. Different review guidance for the two award types Written reviews and In-person NIH-style review meeting with full group of reviewers Applicants will receive feedback on their applications 20
21 Guidance from past grants Must have research focus- planning for it, preparing for it, seeking funding for it Clearly show community interest/involvement Don t have overly ambitious expectations Build on other support, if you have it Connect to future research and opportunities Incorporate active participation in ARCC/CCH activities/training or use of ARCC/CCH resources 21
