3 Seed Grant Purpose & Scope Build stronger community-academic partnerships and improve community health Seed projects and partnerships that will build towards the development of further research proposals Not predetermined # of funded projects (based on submission quality)

Examples of who will join/be invited? Why did partners choose to use CBPR approach? List of potential partners/roles How will partners work together to complete project? How will you fulfill ARCC CBPR principles? Infrastructure that will be developed? (MOU, policies)

13 Collaborative Plans (1-2 pgs) CBPR Implementation Proposals Plans for capacity building Partnership infrastructure How & when partners meet (virtually or in person) Partner agreements (existing or plans to develop) Required to create Memorandum of Understanding by project mid-point How will you assess the health of the partnership?

14 Institutional Review Board (IRB) Reviews proposals to ensure safety and privacy of participants. Looks at: study quality (is it good science?) disclosure of risks and benefits (letting participants know about possibility of any benefit or discomfort or risk) consent forms (are they clear?) Allow enough time (3-4 months) Community partner research team members may need to be IRB certified. ARCC provides this training upon request.

15 Project Leadership (1 pg max) for both partnership building and implementation proposals Document credentials and experience co-pis and other partners bring to partnership or project- show that the team has the necessary expertise to complete the project- e.g. members with methodological/content expertise? Biostatistician for analysis? Describe prior CBPR experience (if any) If none, describe how this capacity will be built? If fellow or student is involved, discuss sustainability of partnership?

16 Budget for both partnership building and implementation proposals Use provided Excel form- will make automatic calculations Required budget review: Submit draft form/justification by Feb 17: Will receive response w/in 48 hrs Grants use institutional (nonsponsored/internal) funds- don t need to go through NU s Office of Sponsored Research (OSR)

Personnel Training/Educational materials Translation/Interpretation Consultant fees (biostatician) Meeting support (space fee, food, child care) Operating Expenses/Communications Travel costs (mileage, parking, conferences) Dissemination costs (e.g. events, PSAs, publicity) Justification: why each type of expense is needed. E.g. staff roles, % time allocated

21 Lessons from Rounds 1-5 Biggest concern: Wanted more specifics Detailed info re: design, methods, recruitment/tools, basis in literature Specific roles of partners- how/when will partners meet/communicate? Strong discussion of next steps: plan for/build structure to support: Esp for partnership building apps: clear plan for next research steps Further research- funding applications dissemination to comm & acad audiences

Don t have overly ambitious expectations (especially for partnership proposals) Does the team have the necessary expertise to complete proposed product? How will community be engaged throughout (not just CBOs but comm. members/residents)? Is this issue a community issue/priority? Build on prior work/other project funding (if prior ARCC grant, describe outcomes, how it went, how it led to this proposal)
