5 OSHA Safety Tip of the Month! Work place safety is important no matter where you work. However, in the construction industry, workers are susceptible to injuries. Below are a few tips on electrical safety. Electrical Safety Work on new and existing energized (hot) electrical circuits is prohibited until all power is shut off and grounds are attached. An effective Lockout/Tagout system is in place. Frayed, damaged or worn electrical cords or cables are promptly replaced. All extension cords have grounding prongs. Protect flexible cords and cables from damage. Sharp corners and projections should be avoided. Use extension cord sets used with portable electric tools and appliances that are the three-wire type and designed for hard or extra-hard service. (Look for some of the following letters imprinted on the casing: S, ST, SO, STO.) All electrical tools and equipment are maintained in safe condition and checked regularly for defects and taken out of service if a defect is found. Do not bypass any protective system or device designed to protect employees from contact with electrical energy. Overhead electrical power lines are located and identified. Ensure that ladders, scaffolds, equipment or materials never come within 10 feet of electrical power lines. All electrical tools must be properly grounded unless they are of the double insulated type. Multiple plug adapters are prohibited. Floor and Wall Openings Floor openings (12 inches or more) are guarded by a secured cover, a guardrail or equivalent on all sides (except at entrances to stairways). Toeboards are installed around the edges of permanent floor openings (where persons may pass below the opening). For more information please visit

6 Planning and Scheduling TIPS ON ESTIMATING By Elliot Marsh ELCON GROUP INC. The success of your entire business depends on the correctness of your estimates. YOU CAN NOT BE TO CAREFUL! Today I d like to use an example of estimating rough carpentry. When taking off number quantities from the plans, always estimate as closely as possible the exact quantity of each type of lumber required. Some contractors are content to estimate their work in this haphazard manner. Estimating number of wood studs- When estimating the number of wood studs, take the length of all partitions. Take the total length of the wood petitions multiplied by three, the resulting number will be the number of lineal feet of plates required. The result will be the number of LF of plates required. Example: find the quantity of lumber required to build a stud petition 100 feet long, 10 foot high, withstood space 16 inches on center and having single top and bottom plates = =12 studs, plus 1 extra stud at the end equals 13 studs 8-0 long. Two top and bottom plates 16-0 long equal 32 LF. 13 pcs. 2x4@ 8-0 = pcs. 2x4@ 16-0 = 42 Total= 136 LF. 136LF. x 2/3= BF After the total number of lineal feet of lumber is obtained, reduced to board measure, as above. The current student enrollment is approximately, 2,500 student. MVSU is committed to reduce administrative costs, maximize efficiencies and move resources toward academics and student services. Mississippi Valley State University is soliciting proposals for Television Services for the campus located in Itta Bena, Mississippi. The intent is to award a contract for Television services including, but not limited to a 24/7 Call Center, system maintenance, an EAS Interface, and inserts for local on campus channels. We are looking for a bulk TV vendor to provide us with traditional programming suite which includes a turnkey Internet Protocol Television Solution. Drawer 350, Charleston MS Architect/Engineer: Tallahatchie County Engineer Scope Of Work: It appearing to be the intention of the Board of Supervisors that under Mississippi law, it is proper at this time to advertise for hauling and granular material (gravel) to be used by the County and its various subdivisions during the years Bidder must agree to let Tallahatchie County Engineer run test(s) on each pit(s) sample or sample(s) for the County at the cost of the bidder at the discretion of the County either before or after award of the contract. The pits must be readily accessible at the time of the bid opening by a road that must be at least ten (10) feet wide for one-way traffic, or at least twenty (20) feet wide for two-way traffic. Warning signs must be placed 500 feet in both directions from the pit entrance. Signs must meet requirements of the Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Hauling contractor must be capable of delivering 600 cubic yards of granular material per day. Granular material are hereby solicited as follows: The three (3) pages of specifications and the mandatory bid sheet can be obtained at the Office of the Chancery Clerk in Charleston, Mississippi or at her address of P.O. Drawer 350, Charleston, MS Bids will be rejected if they are not submitted on the Clay Gravel Bids -Tallahatchie County (bid sheet). The distance or proximity of location of granular material pit may be considered In determining the lowest and best bid. The Board reserves the right to reject any and all bids and to further consider said bids on an item by item basis. Alternate bids may be accepted for situations where the low bidder is unable or unwilling to supply the materials or supplies ordered. Contractor will perform in full under the contract, and the County reserves the right to go to either of the above geographic locations and go to the next lowest and best bidder, at any time during the bid period, without further notification to the contractor, based upon visual observation of clay gravel not meeting the specifications. This visual decision wili be supported by test(s) to be performed by County Engineer as soon as possible; but, not prior to securing of gravel from either of the above geographic locations. At this time, the vendor will be notified in writing of the decision that the clay gravel does not actually meet the specifications and advertisements.
