5 mission: to build the next generation of conservation leaders and inspire lifelong stewardship of our environment and communities by engaging young people in hands-on service to the land. AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering.

6 Brief History of AmeriCorps President John F. Kennedy proposes establishment of the Peace Corps Lyndon B. Johnson creates VISTA Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) engages 38,000 people ages 14 to 18 in summer environmental programs. September President Bill Clinton signs the National and Community Service Trust Act September The first class of AmeriCorps members - 20,000 strong - begins serving in more than 1,000 communities. March 18, Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act Pledged to increase AmeriCorps ranks from 75,000 to 250,000 by Sept 12 th, 2014 AmeriCorps celebrates 20 years of service - Yay!

8 The Student Conservation Association Hudson Valley AmeriCorps The Hudson Valley Corps is comprised of approximately 50 members placed in internships around the valley. The corps meets regularly for trainings, service projects, and to celebrate successes together.

9 AmeriCorps Members: Are part of the national service community They are volunteers who commit to a term of service to the nation They commit to accurately report on their hours of service and their outputs and outcomes If they fulfill their responsibilities they are eligible to earn an AmeriCorps Education Award

10 Members in the Hudson Valley Corps serve either a HT or FT term: 900-hour term = $ weeks 1700 hours = $ weeks Members must serve their entire term and a minimum of 900 or 1700 hours

11 By choosing to be an AmeriCorps site, your site becomes a sub grantee and you commit to meeting their requirements as well.

13 Your most important role is to mentor your member

14 You also agree to: Attend annual Site Supervisor meeting Complete annual Site Application and AmeriCorps Host Site Agreement Approve time logs/output logs and assure completion of term dates Complete Mid-term and End of Term evaluations as well as bi-annual stewardship surveys

15 Monthly Reports Monthly reports will be electronic this year and do not require your signature. Members will be reporting on: Education - number of people and the number of pre/post surveys collected Stewardship - number of miles of trail/river or acres of land improved Volunteers - number of volunteers recruited/managed and number of volunteer hours served

16 Time Logs/ Activity Logs: Members can t count lunch breaks Members can t count travel to and from work Members can count travel to and from SCA Events If out for more than a few days, need to contact Libby or Nick

17 Position Descriptions Position descriptions are carefully reviewed to assure AmeriCorps compliance Please consult with SCA staff if changes need to be made to the PD

18 AmeriCorps Prohibited and Unallowable Activities The Most Common Offenders AmeriCorps is a governmentfunded program, created by Congressional legislation. There are activities that AmeriCorps members are not permitted to participate in during their service term. Signing the Serve America Act, April 2009

19 Displacing / duplicating volunteer or paid staff The member should be doing something that is a discrete project that would otherwise not get done. The regulations specify that we can t use this program to take someone s job or take the place of some other program that is already meeting the need. Examples of non-project related activities: janitorial, answering the phone, taking meeting minutes, clerical, data entry not connected to member s field projects, maintaining facilities. (except when incidental)

20 Fundraising Members can t raise funds for operating expenses or endowment Can raise project specific funds Members can t organize or facilitate donor events or write donor letters Can write thank you letters to donors Members can t develop solicitation materials Members can t write grants to federal agency Can assist with local grants that relate to their position
