2 International Project Grants PURPOSE Through funding provided by the Vice Provost (International), the University International Grants (UIG) promotes the internationalization goals of the University through the distribution of project grants to be used for international purposes. UIG is not a research fund. It is intended to support the establishment of international activities or projects. Projects should contribute to the internationalization goals of the University as outlined in the 2013 International Strategy Becoming a Global Intellectual Hub ucalgary.ca/uci/ files/uci/ucalgary-international-strategy.pdf Projects should address one or more of the four key goals: 1. Increase the diversity of our campus community. 2. Improve global and cross cultural competencies within the campus community. 3. Enhance the opportunities for international collaboration and partnerships in research and education. 4. Leverage our unique areas of expertise to engage in international development. The University International Grants Committee has a multidisciplinary membership appointed by the Vice Provost (International) and is responsible for reviewing applications. The reviewers will focus on the quality and clarity of the proposal and the rationale for the funds requested. AWARDS Up to $12,500 per project is available to support activities that further the University s goals for internationalization. Awards are open to all regular full time faculty, staff and post-doctoral fellows as well as undergraduate and graduate students. All applicants must obtain the signature of their Associate Dean (International) or director international activities (see page 13). Students must have the project sponsored (funds administered) by the Students Union or Graduate Students Association or a department (academic or administrative) at the University of Calgary. The period of the award is normally April 1 to March 31. Extensions may be requested by contacting the secretary of UIGC (Glynn Hunter) at uci@ucalgary.ca PROJECT GRANT INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANTS Applicants: Are strongly encouraged to address how their project will further internationalization goals Are encouraged to seek supporting or additional funds where these are available and record this on the budget plan May not be awarded more than one grant in each fiscal year. 3 CRITERIA FOR THE AWARD Applications will be ranked against the following criteria: Extent to which the project clearly furthers the University s goals in internationalization. The extent to which the project: o Is a new and innovative international initiative o Is a short term project where the funds are considered start up or seed funds o Where funds are used to initiate or support projects which will add to the student experience o Is a project which can show sustainability and continue to promote internationalization at the University; i.e. they should have the potential to foster distinct, identifiable long term international outcomes which benefit the University Projects which have a significant impact on the University of Calgary community, not just within a specific discipline (Interdisciplinary). Benefit to an external partner should be noted but may be considered of secondary importance. Desired outcomes must be clearly enunciated and all participants clearly identified A well thought out concise communication strategy and publicity plan New projects will be given preference over projects seeking to continue/extend an existing activity or enterprise or one which plans to re-establish contacts. This includes secondary preference being given to a project which seeks to establish an existing project into a new location. This fund will not cover: Activities requiring continuing support or for which other support is more appropriately funded from other grants or committees. Expenses considered part of the normal capital or operating budget of a unit; ex: computers, hardware, etc. Expenses to cover international, aid or development projects where funding would be seen as a contribution to aid organizations or NGO s. Research projects Conference attendance, organization support or travel; or sabbatical travel Student travel for: a. courses or research for which they will receive credit (ex: exchanges, field schools, practicums, thesis, research, etc.) b. noncredit experiential programs (ex: service learning) Language training Revised November 2017 University of Calgary International (uci@ucalgary.ca) 3 of 12
