6 RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT GRANT SUBMISSIONS PENDING March 1- March 31, 2018 GRANT Name of Project: NSF SSTEM Valencia Engaging for Completion Through Opportunities in Research (VECTOR) Accountable Administrators: Stacey Johnson Project Directors: Rita Luther Campus Department: East Campus Funding Category: Federal Funding Source: National Science Foundation Date Application Submitted: 3/28/2018 DESCRIPTION Valencia Engaging for Completion Through Opportunities in Research (VECTOR) S-STEM Track 1 Institutional Capacity Building project focuses on the successful transfer of academically talented, low-income STEM students from Valencia College (VC) to upper division STEM programs at regional university partner, the University of Central Florida (UCF). The project will strengthen a unique partnership between VC and UCF developed through a guaranteed transfer program. The S- STEM project is a study of the five-year development and refinement of a STEM support model that will document the conditions under which initial postsecondary experiences including undergraduate research and scholarship support have a positive impact on student persistence in STEM transfer success. The project will serve 30 Associate of Arts degree seeking students over the five-year project period providing wrap-around support services, scholarships to support full-time enrollment, participation in high impact educational practices with opportunities to complete an internship with an industry partner or an undergraduate research experience at UCF. The project will: 1) increase the enrollment and diversity of low-income, academically talented students in STEM degree pathways; 2) adapt evidence based practices and leverage existing resources to create a sustainable student support model; 3) increase student success rates through integrated support services promoting full-time enrollment and degree attainment; and 4) assist student transfer to four-year degree programs and support them gain access to upper division undergraduate research. 7 RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT GRANT SUBMISSIONS PENDING March 1- March 31, 2018 GRANT Name of Project: NSF HSI IUSE LAUNCH INTO STEM Accountable Administrators: Kathleen Plinske Project Directors: Kathleen Plinske Campus Department: College Wide Funding Category: Federal Funding Source: National Science Foundation Date Application Submitted: 3/6/18 DESCRIPTION The project is a planned five-year commitment for the development of an integrated, sustainable interdisciplinary STEM support model to address barriers to underrepresented minority student persistence and engagement in STEM pathways. The model will integrate research findings regarding effective methods for strengthening STEM student success in higher education alongside nationally-recognized methods for innovative teaching in gateway math courses. A third component of the model includes the integration of externally-validated evaluation instruments that document changes in STEM advisement for undergraduate students. In the creation of this model, the project will adapt and integrate the three components to meet the needs of community college students, while specifically developing a model that is STEM-specific and designed to meet the challenges of two-year colleges. Therefore, Valencia seeks funding in the amount of $15,000 for scholarship support to offer the construction program in the lowincome Downtown Orlando neighborhood of Parramore. The construction program was specifically selected for Downtown Orlando. Lasting six weeks (200 hours) and costing $2,800 per person, the program results in attaining five industry-standard certifications: NCCER, OSHA10, MOT Intermediate, CPR, and First Aid. This particular program has seen high placement rates due to the multi-year Orlando 1-4 expansion project, part of $9 billion in construction projects already underway in Central Florida.
