It should provide a credible statement that describes your product and its significance Brief overview and summary of the applicant's project idea 1.1 PROBLEM STATEMENT This section articulates very well the context and social need that will be addressed; It is evidence informed - based on personal observations, surveys, desk reviews Why this innovation needs to be developed further and the problem that it will address including the anticipated changes to the target community. 1.2 INNOVATION/PRODUCT OBJECTIVES This section should highlight what the innovation aims to achieve specifying the anticipated results. This will include an indication of what the innovation will change, the time frame during which the problem will be addressed and how the objectives will contribute to the achievement of the overall goals. Aims, outcome and impact of the innovation/product (highlight how the project involves the partners, the community and encourages community ownership as well as the overall impact the innovation has on the broader community) 2

3 1.3 SOCIAL IMPACT /PEOPLE FOCUS The product has Kenyan people as the key focus. It articulates exactly what the changes/efficiencies will be in their lives and in the long term; the product must demonstrate a community gain The potential social impact of the innovation 1.4 INNOVATION/PRODUCT BENEFICIARIES The potential number of beneficiaries (people to benefit from the innovation) to be reached by the innovation should be indicated. This should clearly provide a breakdown by gender/target group. Number of beneficiaries by gender (Male and female) 1.5 INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY The product clearly demonstrates unique innovation; how different to do things. There is evidence use of mobile technology. There is evidence of the required technical capacity and competences within the team to deliver and sustain the product or willingness to be incubated while developing the product/innovation in case where capacity is lacking. 4 1.6 PROJECT SUSTAINABILITY The innovation must demonstrate how the product continues to operate and benefit Kenyans after the rollout/completion of its development. The evidence of a clear business use/sustainability model with clarity on the usage of the product, payment and sustainability model How the innovation will continue its operations after termination of Safaricom Foundation s funding/beyond Safaricom Foundation funding? 1.7 MONITORING This should contain a clear description of how the innovation will be monitored in the course of development and implementation. Monitoring will ensure that any issues arising are identified in good time which improves efficiency as the development of the innovation moves along. The organization/individual will be required to submit monthly progress reports on the achievements based of the pre-agreed milestones. 5 The project budget will depend on the specific innovation; and payments will be based on preagreed milestones. Innovators will be incubated at the Safaricom Academy at Strathmore University for a maximum of three months. These costs will be paid directly by the Foundation IMPLEMENTATION, MANAGEMENT PLAN AND WORKPLAN This section should contain information on how the project will be delivered. It should describe the project activities indicating how the objectives will be accomplished; what will be done, who will do it and when will it be done. This information should be presented in the form of a workplan. 5
