3 About the Hills Innovation Centre The Hills Innovation Centre, comprising the Lance Hill Design Centre and the D-Shop was opened in May 2014 by the Premier of South Australia, Hon Jay Weatherill MP, together with members of the Hill-Ling family. Hills and the South Australian Government each contributed $2.5 million over three years to support the creation and operations of the Lance Hill Design Centre and the D-Shop (the Hills Innovation Centre) in Adelaide. The objective of the Innovation Centre is to retain local design expertise, and to collaborate with key educational campuses and the rich pool of independent designers in Australia. 3

4 Lance Hill Design Centre (LHDC) & D-Shop Lance Hill Design Centre (LHDC) The LHDC focuses on a user centred design approach to develop innovative solutions that meet the core needs and wants of the end user. Through the methodology of design thinking, the centre promotes project teams to immerse themselves with the core end user so they develop an empathy which allows for the designing of targeted product solutions not previously explored. This process is crucial and therefore promoted across all solutions areas within the centre from health care through to personal security as mentioned in the Innovation Centre Criteria. D-Shop The D-Shop has an emphasis on discovering and commercialising innovation, and where appropriate funds development projects and pilots as well as supporting early stage start-ups in the areas of health and well-being, safety and security. 4

7 Hills Innovation Centre Pitch Days The Hills Pitch Day takes place twice a year May & November. The Hills Pitch Day opportunity is open for everyone to apply. There are two types of applications one for collaborating partners from UniSA, Flinders University, the University of Adelaide and DSTO, and the other application type is for all Australians who have an idea, project or a start-up. The teams that are shortlisted through the application process will have the opportunity to pitch their idea, project or start-up in front of the Hills Innovation Centre Panel (Sponsor Forum) for minutes. The Panel will ask questions and provide constructive feedback for up to 10 minutes. 7

8 Hills Innovation Centre Principles For a product to be successful it must be commercially and operationally viable. The following are the guiding principles of the Hills Innovation Centres. The discovery journey Keep it simple during the discovery stage focus on pain points to solve, user centred design and interactive design innovation. Failure is an option It s OK to fail. Failure comes with the beginnings of a greater outcome. Do not be afraid to back out If the business case does not stack up, don t be afraid to back out. Deliver in days, not months Chunk it down break the idea into smaller elements which have an immediate benefit and deliver faster, deliver the balance through the roadmap lifecycle of the product innovation. Be smart don t create everything Where it makes sense, use what is available today in terms of software, technology and hardware, but make it smarter. This is faster and dependable. 8

12 First Pitch Day 8 May applications were received 8 applicants/pitch teams were invited to Pitch Day 4 applicants were shortlisted from Pitch Day 2 projects have commenced (Arthritis Pendant project and Edisse project) The Hills Innovation Centre team are currently negotiating commercial arrangements with the third team The fourth project did not proceed as the scope of the project and the funding amount requested differed significantly to the original application and approved pitch

13 Hills Health Solutions - Arthritis Handset About the Project Aged care residents who suffer from arthritis can find it difficult to hold and activate the nurse call request button on the handset. Most nurse call handset solutions require the user to use their thumb to push the buttons. Currently most nurse handsets are not targeted at specific user groups in the aged care sector. Project Lead & Current Status The project commenced in the Hills Innovation Centre in July, and is being led and delivered by the University of South Australia. The team is currently working on the final stage of the project doing the final prototype testing, final development and product documentation. The project is due for completion in November

15 Edisse About the Project Edisse s first product is to bring wearable technology into aged care to give the elderly back their independence. Edisse s vision is to become the largest global pioneer of lifestyle based technologies. Edisse s main competitive advantage lies in 3 things - smart alerts, tracking and smart rules. Smart alerts notify the elderly if they leave their phone or watch behind - a massive pain point for families. Tracking outdoors means the elderly aren't limited to their home. Smart rules allow carers to set notification rules. Current Status The Edisse project commenced in the Innovation Centre in October and is currently in stage 2 running pilot programs and reporting. The Edisse project is due for completion in September

18 IP and Legal Agreements We recommend Pitch applicants obtain independent professional legal advice about protecting their idea/project or start up (including advice about the desirability of obtaining patent and other intellectual property rights registration) and the level of detail the pitch should or should not contain. If successful in being shortlisted, applicants will be required to negotiate a commercial agreement with the Hills team. There is a minimum of three potential outcomes that will be negotiated with successful applicants, on a project by project basis: IP Retention the applicant retains all IP IP Licence Agreement the ability for Hills to use the IP with or without remuneration IP Ownership Transfer Hills acquiring ownership of the product produced As part of the negotiations Hills will seek: exclusive distribution rights within Australian and/or global markets; and/or share interest in the company through the form of a convertible note agreement

19 Hills Innovation Centre Supporting South Australia It is a core requirement that all project teams that receive funding from the Hills Pitch Day process spend a minimum of 20% of their project time (across all phases of the project) working from the Hills Innovation Centre in Adelaide. It is also recommended that project teams support South Australian businesses by using local contractors and undertaking manufacturing and any other tasks associated with the project in South Australia wherever possible. Hills have compiled a database of local South Australian businesses that may be able to assist project teams with all aspects of their projects
