15 Change starts from the people at the grassroots level 15 We are responsible for our community Each individual is accountable for their own actions Some of our actions have either irreversible or long-term consequences on the balance of the ecosystem WHY COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IS IMPORTANT We have different interests and level of knowledge in managing limited resources

16 Challenges AND APPROACHES in Tackling the Lack of Community Involvement 16 CHALLENGES The scope of community involvement is too general and complicated. Finding the right leader, or in some cases, no one wants to be the leaders. Time constraint. Self-centeredness and passive attitude of people - how to persuade them? APPROACH Start small; start with us; start simple Plant the seeds; networking Practical schedule; creative community sessions Negotiate/compromise with them to get things done; positive approach in dealing with them

27 Phase II 27 Start community activities Initiating and collaborating with NGOs-NPOs-VAs Encouraging participation of the Singapore Alumni Association organize regular get-togethers: clean-up activity and barbecue party build/strengthen neighbor relationship and as a result maintain the social networks created creating a community association implement activities with educational institutions through the NGOs (i.e. schools around Pasir Ris; CICADA Tree Eco-Place) invite to participate in the activities Making use of available resources from the local government orient them about the goals, projects, activities to solicit support (propose to National Envrionmental Agency (NEA), People s Association (PA)

28 Phase 2 Challenges How to overcome these challenges Start community activities Difficult to organize and get commitment Invite ideas from members on what would they like to have during meetings or activities 28 Making use of available resources from the local government May not be able to attain support if not significant impact is seen. Need to keep track of progress of how it began at an individual level to a community level by the citizens

29 Phase III 29 Collaborating with other community organizations Strengthen collaboration with NGOs-NPOs-VAs Participating in IATSS Alumni Meeting and the International Alumni Meeting Initiating dialogue with government and private sector conducting bigger scale activities to reach a wider set of stakeholders propagate the initiated project to neighboring communities widen participation and network with international NGOs-NPOs-VA organize international activities study visits to other countries information on our projects collaboration on projects collaborate in producing 4R-friendly products request for CSR sponsorship

30 30 Phase 3 Challenges How do we over these challenges Collaborating with other community organizations Initiating dialogue with government representatives and private sector Funds Manpower (based on the scale of activity) May not attain collaboration and support with government Minimize items needed, manpower, event venue and reduce on cost by tapping on Networks without compromising safety of the community Illustrate how we can help government efforts on a community level
