2 Neighbourhood Spirit Small Grant Funds Program The Neighborhood Spirit Small Grant Funds (NSSGF) program is an initiative to encourage residents and community groups of Abbotsford to engage in neighborhood projects and activities that beautify streets and ignite positive social activity in public spaces. It is a partnership between the City, Vancouver Foundation, and the Abbotsford Community Foundation. The funds are distributed in amounts from $500 to $1,000 per project, through a matching funds process. There are four types of grants: community connections, neighbourhood beautification, child and youth engagement, and neighbourhood safety. Successful applicants match their requested amount with contributions of volunteer labor and services, donated materials and/or cash. NSSGF is a partnership in which the applicant and the City contribute equally to a proposed project. Funds are provided to a maximum of $1,000 per project, and are offered to support the planning, organizing, and implementing of neighborhood initiatives. For example, if an applicant applies for a $1,000 grant, they need to contribute an equal amount through volunteer labour, supplies, or cash. Community Connections This category is for projects that enhance the connections in a community. These projects could include neighborhood barbeques, activities, workshops, and other community building activities. Activities where residents share their knowledge and skills with other community members are encouraged. 2. Neighborhood Beautification This category is for projects that have the goal of reinvigorating or making a public area more beautiful. Some examples include park or neighborhood clean-ups, fence painting, gardening, trail and sign refurbishing. 1

3 3. Child and Youth Engagement This category is for projects that encourage the participation of children and youth in meaningful activities that promote civic engagement and pride. Examples include activity days, neighborhood youth projects, local sport tournaments. 4. Neighbourhood Safety This grant category is for neighborhoods that want to improve the safety and eyes on the street factor for their neighborhood, to help make the environment safer. Examples of eligible projects could include landscaping for visibility and surveillance, street lighting, graffiti clean-ups, and the re-design of public space to deter crime. Block watch activities and emergency planning can also be included in this category. Funding Criteria and Eligibility Who can apply? Abbotsford residents in groups of three can apply, students, community groups, registered non- profits, and non-registered groups of Abbotsford. Groups are not required to be a registered association or organization to apply. Grants will not be awarded: For the purpose of private gain. To religious organizations, government agencies, political or partisan groups, universities, or non-abbotsford based organizations (based or originating). Grants must not be used to: Duplicate an existing public or private program in the same area. Support ongoing programs or services. Replace funding lost from other sources or provide gap funding. Pay for out of the city travel expenses. Pay for expenditures or financial commitments made before the organization s grants application was submitted. 2
