2 Seniors Community Recreation Grant The Seniors Community Recreation Grant is a strategic initiative supported by both Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador: A Recreation and Sport Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador and the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework. It is designed to encourage seniors to maintain and enhance their well-being through a lifestyle that embraces physical activity and active living. According to the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology's (CSEP) physical activity guidelines, to achieve optimal health benefits older adults aged 65 and over should accumulate a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity each week and engage in muscle and bone strengthening activities twice a week. That's at least 30 minutes of activity, 5 days a week. Visit to view the guidelines. Through the Seniors Community Recreation Grant, funding up to $2000 is available to assist in providing opportunities for seniors to become physically active, especially in social environments. What is Physical Activity? Physical activities are activities that get your body moving such as gardening, walking the dog, raking leaves, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Additional examples of physical activity include: walking/hiking chair aerobics yoga snowshoeing water aerobics ballroom, line or international dancing cross-country skiing martial arts strength training activities zumba tai chi performing arts What types of expenditures are eligible? A wide range of activities are eligible for support including development and implementation of programs, small equipment costs, leadership training, transportation costs and certified instruction fee. What can I do if I need help developing and implementing my idea? Contact Local Partners and Networks Local health units and municipalities often have physical activity resources developed for their own communities. If there is a recreation department or committee in your town or community, contact them for support with the application and with programming ideas.

3 Become familiar with existing community-wide or national campaigns. Such campaigns often have sustained high visibility, which have the greatest potential to affect physical activity levels. These campaigns often include materials that can be used in your community or group. Use Current, Best Evidence-Based Practice to Inform Your Initiatives Look for resources that are based on quality research and/or resources that have been developed by consensus groups of recognized and certified organizations. Visit the Physical Activity Resource Centre at for resources such as Walk This Way that contains information needed to start and maintain a walking program in your community. Identify and Partner with Physical Activity Champions and Experts Enlist older adults who are active in their communities to serve as peer-to-peer champions of physical activity. Increase the visibility of older adult role models by engaging active older adults in presentations to organizations and participants. Visit for leadership training programs that are evidence-based, hands-on learning experiences offered by the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging. What activities/projects are ineligible? Programs with no physical activity component; One time activities or special events; Retroactive expenses for costs incurred prior to awarding of grant; Ongoing operational or administrative costs; Capital asset purchases (major equipment, office furniture, renovations, construction); Salaries of existing employees. Who can apply? Municipalities and Incorporated Recreation Committees/Commissions (in areas where no incorporated municipality exists) as well as community groups and organizations that provide recreation opportunities for seniors. Applications will not be accepted from: Individuals For-Profit Organizations Groups who have not submitted follow up reports for any funding received under the above programs in preceding years.

4 What is the application deadline? Application must be received no later than December 12 th, 2014 to be considered for funding. How do I apply? In order to serve you better, we encourage you to file your completed application electronically at communityrecreation@gov.nl.ca. How will my application be assessed? Applications will be reviewed on their individual merit based on financial resources available and the following: Enhanced opportunities for seniors to become physical activity; Appropriateness of the project in relation to the activities of the organization/group; Compliance with eligibility requirements; Satisfactory completion of previous grants requirements. How will payments be processed? Seniors Community Recreation Grants will be received in one payment following the approval of applications. Payment will be issued to the organization/group identified in the application. New organizations/groups, or previously funded organizations/groups with updated mailing address and/or contact information, are required to sign up for direct deposit / Electronic Funds Transfer. 9 Section 5: Conditions and Privacy Notice The Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development (SWSD) funding may be used only for the purposes specified in this application. Once the SWSD has agreed to provide financial assistance, no substantial change in these activities shall be made without the consent of the SWSD and it shall be at the discretion of SWSD to determine what constitutes substantial change in each case. SWSD reserves the right to determine the extent and type of information required to support payment of the grant. Further, SWSD may require that an audit be undertaken to verify the purposes for which Government funds have been utilized. Any funding not used for these purposes must be returned to SWSD or becomes a debt due the Crown. The organization/group is wholly responsible for its own debts. SWSD will not consider any application to pay debts. If any part of this funding is used to pay salaries or honoraria, federal and provincial laws concerning salaries and source deductions must be applied (i.e. deductions for income tax, unemployment insurance, etc.) Whenever appropriate, public acknowledgement of funding by SWSD is expected. Publications should clearly acknowledge SWSD s assistance. A standard statement of acknowledgement is available on request. The organization/group agrees to respect and apply the spirit and provisions of existing human rights legislation. Under the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, members of the public may request and obtain access to information held in Provincial Government records.
