2 RFQ Call Summary Jeffersonville, Indiana recently organized the Jeffersonville Public Art Committee (JPAC) and is seeking qualified artist for several projects that will initiate the city s public art program. A budget will be established in the near future based on the response received from this RFQ. There are currently 3 types of projects Jeffersonville s Public Art Committee are considering: 1. Functional/integrated works The Jeffersonville Public Art Committee is interested in hearing from artists who have created artistic bike racks, benches, shelters, and other related art pieces that provide a practical function to public spaces. These works are primarily needed in the historic downtown, but they could be considered in other parts of the city. 2. Murals Jeffersonville has a large flood wall that runs parallel with the river downtown. The floodwall already has several existing murals on it. Both the public and city officials have expressed interest in having additional murals created on this wall. 3. Gateways JPAC would like to see art integrated into areas outside the downtown such as one or more gateways. Project Description The pieces developed from this project can come from any artist or group of artists. There is a desire to work with local artists whenever possible. However, all qualified artists will be considered. The JPAC is a five person board which formed in It is comprised of a City Council representative, a local art teacher, Director of Planning and Zoning, Director of Jeffersonville Main Street, and a local resident. This body is currently seeking a Public Art Administrator to oversee future projects. In the meantime, JPAC would like to get several highly visible projects started. It s anticipated that funding will become available for several of these projects during the summer of Art goals or criteria Several goals are desired through this project: 1. Pieces should create a sense of place within the community; 2. Pieces should be highly visible; 3. Pieces should integrate the city s history where possible; and 4. Streetscape elements should be at a practical scale. Art Location Description Functional art is primarily needed in the downtown commercial district to accommodate bicyclist and pedestrians. It will be considered for other key activity centers. Murals are currently only being considered for the floodwall downtown.

3 Multiple gateways into the city should be considered for a stand-alone piece. This includes gateways into suburban neighborhoods around the gateway areas including but not limited to Veterans Parkway, Stansifer, Utica Pike, and 265/10 th Street. Site or Art Location Plans Detailed site plans are not being requested. At this time JPAC wants only to evaluate the pool of qualified artists and their past works for potential future projects. Specific site details will be provided to artists chosen to participate. A general map is attached that shows the city s downtown area and gateways. Budget Funding for projects will be requested after JPAC has evaluated qualified artists. Artist Eligibility All artists and groups of artists are eligible. Local artists and artists who have experience interacting with community are encouraged to apply. Application Requirements Please include the following with your application: Visual support materials of works relevant to this project (no more than 10 slides, videos no longer than 10 mins.) Annotated lists of previous relevant works Statement of interest, often restricted to a number of words (e.g. 200 words) Resume or short biography Any media coverage of previously completed work Self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) for the return of hardcopy materials Deadline June 1, 2013 Submission Address scorbin@cityofjeff.net

4 Selection Process The JPAC will review all applications, inviting outside experts in related fields (engineering, architectural, etc.) as needed for specific technical input, to formally select the preferred application. The JPAC will make the final selection. Selection Criteria Finalists will be selected on the following criteria: Strength of past artwork Experience working in a public setting Experience fabricating and installing permanent artwork The Jeffersonville Public Arts Committee is committed to reflecting the diversity and cultural richness of our town in the selection of artists and artwork. References provided as a part of this application will be contacted prior to artist interviews.
