With nearly 700 members from the eight counties located within Southeast Michigan and the City of Detroit, Automation Alley continued to forge ahead in today s ever-changing economy. 5 The Results Are In Automation Alley polled its members with an online membership survey this summer to determine what concerns the business community has and what Automation Alley benefits members are taking advantage of. The feedback will be used as Automation Alley plans for future events, initiatives, and programming in According to the respondents, the top three business concerns are: the state of Southeast Michigan s economy; the impact of the automotive industry on the region; and their company s viability. Also, nearly 50 percent believe that Automation Alley has had a good-to-strong impact on changing the perception of Southeast Michigan from a rust belt to a high-tech region, rich with talent and opportunity. In addition, 93 percent of Automation Alley members have attended a networking event, and almost 75 percent of members have participated in an educational seminar or workshop. Overall, 71 percent of respondents rated their Automation Alley membership experience as good to excellent. Nearly 80 percent of members would recommend Automation Alley to other business associates, with many indicating that they have already referred others and value their membership greatly. Securitization Funding Automation Alley was awarded a $6 million contract by the Michigan Strategic Fund Board to continue operating its Automotive Technology Business Accelerator. Automation Alley will use this funding to encourage the development of competitive-edge technologies through the creation of early-stage seed funds, support the outreach and growth of technology-based businesses and professionals, and support international business development. In supporting the development of competitive-edge technologies, Automation Alley will use $1.4 million per year to create early-stage seed funds, which will result in approximately seven to ten investments annually for three years. The Automation Alley Technology Center will manage the seed investment portion of this plan while continuing to deliver essential programs and mentoring to support the creation and commercialization of innovative technologies. In addition, the Automation Alley International Business Center will support international business development through trade missions and business attraction meetings aimed at attracting technology firms to Michigan and exporting products and services rather than jobs. Automation Alley will also use the funds to support the outreach and growth of technology-based businesses and professionals throughout the state and will continue to brand Southeast Michigan as a global center for technology. 3

6 Second Annual Technology Industry Report In October, Automation Alley released its Second Annual Technology Industry Report: Driving Southeast Michigan Forward, which documents the size and scope of Southeast Michigan s technology industry, using data on employment, payroll, and establishments in the technology industry. The report shows that Southeast Michigan, with 332,531 technology jobs and 8,150 technology establishments, has tremendous strength, and technology vitality. The Second Annual Technology Industry Report provides hard facts regarding Automation Alley s strong employee and establishment technology base with above average wages, high-skilled and high-knowledge jobs, groundbreaking discoveries, and investment by firms from around the world. The technology definition included in the report identifies six specific technology sectors within Southeast Michigan: Advanced Automotive, Advanced Manufacturing, Chemical and Material, Information Technology, Life Sciences, and Other Technologies. Although these six clusters play a vital role in Automation Alley, there are additional activities taking place in the region that promise future growth of the technology industry. These include quantitative measures such as patent awards and university research and development, plus qualitative assessments of items such as workforce development programs and industry promotion activity. Compiled by Anderson Economic Group, LLC, the report states that the region has experienced job growth in three of six key technology segments: Advanced Manufacturing, Chemical and Material, and Life Sciences. It also cites rising research and development expenditures as key to the growth of Southeast Michigan s economy and concludes that despite recent declines in the automotive sector, the Automation Alley region is economically diverse enough to stand on its own. Employment by Technology Clusters in Automation Alley,

7 The Importance of Regionalism Collaboration is the foundation on which the region s successes are being built. Resolutions Automation Alley, with assistance from the Government Affairs Committee, went on record as supporting the proposed increase in Michigan high school graduation requirements for mathematics and science. A letter expressing this sentiment was delivered to Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and to the Superintendent of Public Instruction in support of their efforts; the new education requirements were approved by the Legislature and signed by the Governor. Automation Alley is now seeking ways to assist educators with implementing these new requirements. Building Recognition for Automation Alley Automation Alley once again sponsored the Michigan Society of Association Executives (MSAE) Legislative Conference. (Troy) Prezign (Livonia) Saphran (Ann Arbor) SpaceForm (Detroit) Alternative Energy at Its Finest The Automation Alley Technology Center, in conjunction with Auburn Hills-based United Solar Ovonic, completed a 30 kilowatt (kw) photovoltaic solar panel demonstration system, installed on the roof of Automation Alley Headquarters in Troy. The system demonstrates recent technology advancements in solar and battery power, and was paid for with a $550,000 grant from the Michigan Public Service Commission. The system utilizes United Solar Ovonic s UNI-SOLAR laminates installed on both the flat rooftop and a fixed tilted array, covering nearly 11,000 square feet. Of the 30 kw generated by the system, 26 kw are tied directly to the power grid (the network of power lines, transformers, and power plants that deliver electricity to individual buildings); two kw are utilized as direct current (DC) for the building s lighting (with a battery backup); and two kw are dedicated to battery backup for the building s servers, telecommunications and audio-visual controls. In all, the system is predicted to generate approximately 42,500 kwh over the course of one year, representing more than 25 percent of the building s average annual energy usage. Additional technology companies that assisted with the project included Cobasys, Nextek Power Systems, and SUR Energy Systems. 12

15 Technology Center Digital Manufacturing Grant Automation Alley has partnered with the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS), DELMIA Corporation, Oakland Schools and the Oakland County Workforce Investment Board (WIB) to offer digital manufacturing technology solutions, brokering services, and training to at-risk students and displaced and incumbent workers. With a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, Automation Alley will provide program oversight outreach and placement access to its member companies, which include start-up technology organizations and large advanced automotive corporations. The Digital Manufacturing Network curriculum will focus on two major academic areas: calculus-based mathematics and science as well as applied mathematics and science. The WIB will offer employment placement services to the trainees through its One Stop Shop operators. NCMS will provide a variety of services, including education, training, assistance in project management, and support staff. DELMIA will offer discounted software and training. The program will seek to train and place incumbent and displaced workers in high-tech, higher paying positions, build foundations in math and science, and enhance technical skills through a career ladder approach. Small- and medium-sized companies will benefit from the training for workers specifically designed for their needs, and large manufacturers will benefit from an improved supplier base. Our ability to strengthen our economy in Southeast Michigan lies in working together and linking capabilities across all eight counties. Automation Alley provides the conduit to forge those capabilities into much more than any community or organization can accomplish alone.
