3 Introduction This Council is one of the mechanisms to bring Royal Mogale, the Traditional Council and Bapo ba Mogale Investments vision to reality The Bapo Business Council will be a business-led organisation set up to grow the Bapo ba Mogale private sector and to promote the region The Council will encourage dialogue between business and social entrepreneurs, policy makers, experts and academics The Council will collaborate with the Bapo Employment Recruitment Office to assist with employment opportunities 3
4 Alignment of strategies The vision and mission of all Bapo ba Mogale initiatives must be aligned internally but in addition to address: The President s 17 June 2014 State of the Nation Address - the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment continue to affect the lives of many people North West Provincial Economy and Enterprise Development Department: Vision: A growing, diversified and prosperous economy in the North West Province Mission: To achieve the development and growth of a well coordinated, vibrant, diversified and sustainable economy that will create jobs and eradicate unemployment in the North West Province 4
5 Bapo ba Mogale Investments - Vision 5 Bapo ba Mogale is an iconic Morafe that is a culturally and economically strong community united by shared values and tradition, with a collective strength for the greater good of all
6 Bapo ba Mogale Investments - Mission 6 To develop the economy through the identification, development and collaboration of business ventures that will create job opportunities, develop skills and create wealth in the area Guide the Morafe to be committed to the preservation, protection and promotion of our history, culture, traditions and environment Provide social, health and educational resources, opportunities and services which will contribute to the greater good of the Morafe

8 Bapo ba Mogale Investments Strategic focus area: Rural development Manufacturing: The identification of key strategic projects that create large employment opportunities in the area Investments should be targeted in workforce training, infrastructure, research, and other key assets that will ensure sustainable growth for the area Agriculture: Introduction of cooperative agricultural industries Processing: Introduction of cooperative process plants Leverage existing financial and technical assistance resources from government agencies and bureaus to spur economic growth in the area: Combination of investment tools such as grants, loans and incentives, thereby reducing financial risk 8

10 Proposed Bapo Business Council Strategy (1/2) 10 Vision: The Bapo ba Mogale region is a worldclass destination for business investment Mission: Promote development of entrepreneurship thereby creating wealth and social justice in the region
11 Proposed Bapo Business Council Strategy (2/2) 11 Objectives: Proactively improve infrastructure, enhancing workforce development and promote robust economic development in the region to make the Bapo ba Mogale region a better place to invest, live, work and raise a family Act as the primary link between local government including the Madibeng Municipality and local business community (inward investors or indigenous businesses) Leverage resources in the region, nationally and internationally Facilitate opportunities for local economic development Assist members to grow their businesses and fulfil a leading role in the community Facilitate access to funding for the creation of business ventures and projects via grants and loans Support young people to flourish, socially and academically by providing them the opportunity to fulfil their potential by training and employment Serve as monitoring mechanism of the region on the implementation of economic development projects
12 12 Council tools (1/2) A local business registry will be maintained by the Council to create sustainable procurement and opportunities for joint ventures Networking Website, Facebook etc. Coordinated interaction with media
13 Council tools (2/2) Provide training addressing relevant topics, for example: Setting up a business Good business administration Financial management Tax compliance Good labour practices Business ethics Tender processes Legal and regulatory compliance Marketing & advertising 13
14 14 Funding Investments will be received from: Local Economic Development Trust Bapo ba Mogale Investments External stakeholders Voluntary members contributions
15 15 Affiliations The Council will aim to affiliate with associations and institutions to access resources to the benefit of the Council s members, amongst others: Department of Trade & Industry South Africa South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) Business Unity South Africa National Economic Development & Labour Council (NEDLAC) National African Chamber of Commerce & Industry (NAFCOC)
16 16 Membership (1/2) Council members should consist of: Business individuals Mining companies Other private organisations Madibeng Municipality North West Provincial Economy and Enterprise Development Department National Government
17 17 Membership (2/2) Council members would consist of (continues): Non-Government Organisations (NGO s) Community Based Organisations (CBO s) Other Traditional Authorities in the region Accounting/auditing firms Business Schools Universities
18 Membership criteria Full and associated memberships Application for memberships to be made whereby the applicant will be evaluated to ensure that: Any person is of sound mind and good standing Owns and runs a business within the region With an interest in local economic development With good knowledge and understanding of the economic situation in the region Will voluntary contribute to the success of the Council and the region by means of apprenticeships, internships, mentoring and shadowing 18
19 19 Council Board From the members, a Board will be elected to direct the Bapo Business Council The Board should consist of a vast array of skills and experience to provide effective direction of the Council and its members
20 20 Council Working Groups Working groups to be establish to deal with specific issues and provide feedback The terms of reference of Working Groups will be determined by the Board
21 21 Council interactions Council Forum to normally meet once in a quarter except if there is an urgent need to meet between quarters Business breakfasts with a keynote speaker who addressed the Forum on a topic relevant to members or to share success stories Annual dinner to bring together business and community leaders to celebrate successes by awarding prizes
22 Proudly Bapo campaign To build the Bapo brand we would like to commence a Proudly Bapo campaign similar to the hugely successful Proudly South African campaign The Proudly South African is a mark of local content and quality to promote buying local thereby creating jobs The Proudly Bapo will be a mark of Bapo related content and of a consistent high quality 22
23 Proudly Bapo campaign The users of the phrase "Proudly Bapo" and logo will have to be members of the Bapo Business Council Tool to build the brand which will be synonymous with: Quality Good labour practices Sustainable development Locally produced product or by means of transforming imported materials Proudly Bapo logo to be displayed on all products from the region 23
24 Proudly Bapo campaign 24 Compliance monitoring is required to ensure that consumers have confidence that the logo and phrase are used in accordance with the rules and conditions to be defined Compliance monitoring will be performed by the Council to ensure that: The phase and logo are only used by eligible members Follow-up with members to obtain outstanding or updated documentation if lacking Part of Councils commitment to good governance Necessary as misuse will dilute the brand value
25 Qualifying criteria to participate in Proudly Bapo campaign 1. Local Bapo region content: At least 50% of production cost must be incurred; or Imported materials are substantially transformed 2. Quality product: The product or service must be of a consistent high quality 3. Fair labour practices: The member company must comply with labour legislation and fair labour practices 4. Environmental standards: The member must environmentally responsible and production processes must be environmentally friendly and acceptable 25
26 26 Way forward Engage with potential members who can actively contribute to the Council Identify resources and affiliations Obtain membership applications Obtain director nominations Hold inauguration meeting end February 2015 where the Council s Terms of Reference will be lodged and the founding Board will be elected
