CET PRAGUE FILM PRODUCTION PHOTOGRAPHY NEW MEDIA Spring, Fall 2017
Part of the charm of this program was that I was in Prague, at FAMU, one of the oldest film schools in Europe. Aside from FAMU s illustrious filmmaking history, there was also the rich history of Prague itself. And Prague is very good for filming on a budget! The city is not only affordable, but also ridiculously photogenic, as well as close to many other major European cities. Jennifer Fang, Wellesley College, CET Film, Spring 2016 cetacademicprograms.com
CHOOSE YOUR PROGRAM CET FILM PRODUCTION Produce your own film and participate in every aspect of filmmaking directing, cinematography, casting, screenwriting, producing, and editing. You ll create a narrative film in 16mm or 35mm, or a documentary in digital. CET PHOTOGRAPHY Study photography both its theory and its practice. You ll use professional equipment, attend a lighting seminar in a professional studio, and at the end of the semester, you ll exhibit your work at a gallery or café. CET NEW MEDIA If you re a new media artist with a clear vision for a project, this is the program for you. You ll create a transmedia project, and study one-on-one with select faculty. You ll have access to cutting-edge facilities, and you ll exhibit your work at the end of the semester. YOU BRING THE ARTISTRY. WE LL COVER THE REST. Project Funding? Mentors? Facilities? Check, check & check. In each program, you ll attend world renowned FAMU, the Film and Television School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. FAMU is one of Europe s finest art and film schools (and it has a jaw-dropping list of famous alumni to prove it). You ll use state-of-the-art facilities and work with inspiring faculty mentors. We ll even provide you with a generous project budget. You ll have everything you need to bring your artistic vision to life.
CET FILM PRODUCTION You ll produce a 7- to 10- minute narrative film. Working in 16mm, you ll gain a solid foundation in traditional filmmaking techniques that will only help you when you switch to digital later on. Faculty guide you, but you are in the driver s seat pitching ideas, creating storyboards, setting lighting, directing shots, editing takes. You ll work in a small team of students and collaborate with professional camera assistants, sound designers, and color graders. Got experience working in 16mm? You might produce a film in 35mm. Got experience in documentary filmmaking? You might create a digital documentary. Both of these options are available in the fall semester only. Find more information at ACADEMICS IN THE SPRING OR FALL FILM TECHNOLOGY & PRACTICE 195 hours. 9 credits. CZECH LANGUAGE 45 hours. 3 credits. FAMU ELECTIVES Hours vary. 1 to 3 credits each. Direct enroll at FAMU with other international students. Sample courses: acting, animation, cinematography, directing, screenwriting, producing, script analysis. cetacademicprograms.com
Dates, Fees, Credits SPRING 2017 Application Deadline: 10/15/16 Arrival Date: 01/18/17 Departure Date: 05/17/17 FALL 2017 Application Deadline: 05/01/17 Arrival Date: 08/23/17 Departure Date: 12/20/17 PROGRAM LENGTH: 17 weeks PROGRAM FEE: $21,990 RECOMMENDED CREDITS: LIVING IN PRAGUE You ll share an apartment with other CET students and a Czech student. Apartments are bright, spacious, and close to the city center. Prague boasts outstanding public transportation, and with your CET-provided transportation pass, you ll have the entire city at your fingertips. LIGHTING WORKSHOP You ll practice your technical skills during a three-day lighting workshop. You ll use professional equipment, and learn how lighting design intersects with storytelling. When you re done, you ll head to Barrandov film studios (the Czech Hollywood) to conduct a telecine transfer of footage. While my group was editing our film, we reached out to our editing professor to get her advice. She was incredibly helpful and provided us with a constructive critique. And this support was essential because it motivated my group to commit to our mission and take artistic risks. Halley Freger, Grinnell College, Spring 2016
CET PHOTOGRAPHY You ll study photography from all sides the history, the theory, the techniques. In-classroom learning is balanced by out-of-classroom practice, with beautiful Prague as your backdrop. What about this incredible city will inspire you? Cobblestone streets and elegant spires? Or a noise-rock concert down the street from the John Lennon wall? Your project at the end of the semester brings it all together. You ll prepare your final pieces, print your selections, oversee mounting and framing for display, and exhibit your work in one of Prague s many galleries or cafés. Previous experience in photography is required. You ll also need your own 35mm camera. Find more information at ACADEMICS IN THE SPRING FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY & WORKSHOP 63 hours. 3 credits. IMAGERY, AMBIGUITY & CULTURE 45 hours. 3 credits. CZECH LANGUAGE 45 hours. 3 credits. FAMU ELECTIVES Hours vary. 1 to 3 credits each. Direct enroll at FAMU with other international students. 7 Dates, Fees, Credits SPRING 2017 Application Deadline: 10/15/16 Arrival Date: 01/18/17 Departure Date: 05/17/17 PROGRAM LENGTH: 17 weeks PROGRAM FEE: $21,990 RECOMMENDED CREDITS: LIVING IN PRAGUE You ll share an apartment with other CET students and a Czech student. We ll provide you a transportation pass so that you can take advantage of Prague s excellent public transportation system and attend any gallery opening, film festival, or art exhibition you want. LIGHTING SEMINAR You ll spend a day in a professional studio, working with photo models, learning about studio lighting, and practice shooting still-life and staged photos. You ll also have the option to attend a large-format workshop at a FAMU studio in Beroun. What I really loved about the program was the fact that they really encouraged the practice of traditional darkroom photography, and gave us the freedom to explore our individual interests (be they fashion, documentary, landscape ). The people you meet and the places you visit all help fuel you artistically, and help you create the best portfolio you can. Nicole Lewis, San Francisco Art Institute, Photography in Prague, Spring 2013
CET NEW MEDIA You ll create an intermedia project. The sky s the limit for what you can do interactive video installation, expanded-to-database cinema, locative and mobile media, code-based projects, multi-channel and multi-threaded sound and images. We give you plenty of support, including one-on-one classes with your faculty mentor and regular crit sessions with instructors and peers. You ll also attend performances and workshops put on by FAMUinvited artists, and reap the benefits of their experience and insight. At the end of the semester, you ll show off your work by exhibiting in a Prague gallery, and bask in the glow of your growth as an artist. Background in new media is required. The application process includes assessment of the project you propose. Find more information at ACADEMICS IN THE SPRING NEW MEDIA MENTORSHIP & WORKSHOP 45 hours. 3 credits. NEW MEDIA HISTORY 45 hours. 3 credits. CZECH LANGUAGE 45 hours. 3 credits. cetacademicprograms.com THREE FAMU ELECTIVES Hours vary. 1 to 3 credits each. Sample courses: 3D sound, art & technology, copyright, free practice, NARRA, audiovision, computer games VISITING ARTIST MODULES Hours vary. 1 to 3 credits each. May replace a FAMU elective.
Dates, Fees, Credits SPRING 2017 Application Deadline: 10/15/16 Arrival Date: 01/18/17 Departure Date: 05/17/17 PROGRAM LENGTH: 17 weeks PROGRAM FEE: $21,990 RECOMMENDED CREDITS: LIVING IN PRAGUE You ll share an apartment with other CET students and a Czech student. Getting to FAMU (and any festival or art showing you want) is easy, thanks to Prague s fantastic public transportation and the transportation pass that we provide you. STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES FAMU boasts an impressive list of state-of-the-art resources to which you ll have full access a black box theater with multichannel sound system, a Virtual Reality CAVE environment, full sound and image editing suites, and a range of computers, cameras, projectors and darkrooms. As a very independent student, this program was a perfect fit for me. The support the program provides greatly helped me improve as an artist, and tested me to even measure failures as successes. I learned how to push myself to work on my own, how to stand behind my ideas, and how to let them naturally evolve. Bailley Vensel, Smith College, Spring 2015
WHY CHOOSE CET & FAMU? BECAUSE YOU LL GET THE FULL FAMU EXPERIENCE PLUS CET SUPPORT. Attending a celebrated foreign institution like FAMU can be challenging, but unlike other international students, you ll have CET staff on your side, helping you adjust to Czech university life. Maybe your course is suddenly rescheduled to make way for a visiting artist or your instructor s exhibit opening. With CET s help, these hiccups will feel minor, and worth every bit of the mentorship, guidance, and resources you ll get in return. BECAUSE WE ARE COMMITTED TO INCLUSION, AND WELCOME DIFFERENT NEEDS. Special learning needs? Housing needs? Dietary needs? We ll work with you to make sure that you choose a destination that can meet your particular requirements. You can even find Essential Eligibility Criteria on our website to learn how each program might accommodate you. cetacademicprograms.com/eligibility-criteria BECAUSE WE KNOW THERE S MORE TO EACH CITY THAN WHAT THE GUIDEBOOK SAYS. It s not that the guidebooks are wrong. If you go to Prague, you definitely don t want to miss Charles Bridge or the Prague Castle. But what makes Prague special are the places not in the guidebooks the cheap eateries, the live music venues, the local theaters. Let us show you off-the-map Prague, and see how much more you can get out of your semester abroad. cetacademicprograms.com
