24 NEW PROGRAMMES ONE STAGE APPLICATION Objectives: - Support the long-term development of a health field - Fund research with strategic, long-term vision Budget: $5 M, 5 yrs (FR2011, 4/14 PRG funded) Eligibility: - 3 researchers with peer-reviewed contracts/track record - Investigators may hold other contracts PRJ components of PRG allowed but a poorly rated PRJ will jeopardise the PRG

25 NEW PROGRAMMES REQUIREMENTS FOR DIRECTORS PRG director with 1 yr remaining; or Past PRG director; or First NI on 2 PRJ grants from HRC or equivalents; or Leads a team of 2 First NI on PRJ grants from HRC or equivalents in the last 3 yrs; 0.2 FTE to this PRG; and Employed by a NZ institute; and Residing in NZ

27 PROJECT TWO STAGE APPLICATION: EOI + FULL Objective: Support individuals/small teams to address well-defined research questions Budget: $1.2 M, generally for 3 yrs for shorter contracts, budget at average $0.4 M pa No disadvantage to putting in smaller budget FR2011: Average budget = $1.0 M, 36/127 funded Eligibility: No limit to number of EoI applications by 1 st NI

28 EMERGING RESEARCHER FIRST GRANT REGISTRATION 21 Sept 03 Oct 2011 FULL APPLICATION 06 Oct 04 Nov 2011 Objective: Working expenses for emerging researchers Budget: $150,000, 3 yrs Eligibility: PI must have not held a contract for research expenses of $50,000 Proposals should represent an independent research stream FR2011 results: 11/34 applications (33%, FR2010: 24%)

31 SIR CHARLES HERCUS HEALTH RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP REGISTRATION/APPLICATION 24 Aug 01 Sept 2011 Objective: - Intended to build future capability to conduct world-class research - Support research stars whose scientific fields have the potential to contribute to health/economic goals for Govt s investment Budget: $0.5 M, 4 yrs ($0.1 M/yr salary + $0.1 M research costs) Eligibility: Citizens/residents, 4-8 yrs post-phd, FTE FR2011: 5/13 funded (FR2010: 3/9).

32 CLINICAL RESEARCH TRAINING FELLOWSHIPS REGISTRATION/APPLICATION 24 Aug 01 Sept 2011 Objectives: - Support medical, dental and allied health professionals to undertake a PhD or equivalent - Provide a training that will combine academic course work and/or degree with on the job experience Budget: $250,000 ( $80,000 salary/fees/acc + $10,000 research costs, pro rata if <3 yrs) Eligibility: Citizens/residents, medical/dental graduates, psychologists and nurses

33 FOXLEY FELLOWSHIP REGISTRATION/APPLICATION 24 Aug 01 Sept 2011 Objectives: - Enable health professionals to undertake a sabbatical in NZ - Enhance links between HRC-funded research and health care delivery and/or health policy Budget: Salary + $20,000 research costs, 1-2 yrs Eligibility: 0.2 FTE, health professionals with 5 yrs experience. Not to be used to fund a degree.

34 MĀORI HEALTH RESEARCH CDA Application close: 03 Oct 2011 Summer Studentships ($5,000) Intended for Māori active in their community, and with no prior research training, to undertake research training on a project Masters Scholarships ($10,000 + course fee) Support a Māori student undertaking the research component of the Masters PhD Scholarships ($25,000p/a + $10,000 working expenses) Supports outstanding students in any discipline whose proposed programme for a PhD is relevant to health Postdoctoral Fellowships (salary + $125,000 working expenses) Support outstanding graduates who have recently completed a doctoral degree and propose to conduct health research
