3 The Role of AHRC Internationalise existing funding opportunities (FAPESP, NSF, international Co-Is) Create new funding opportunities - with other international funders/partners and Research Councils Continue to facilitate movement of researchers to and from the UK Influence international funding agendas (H2020) Raise awareness of existing funding opportunities Continue to fund quality UK based A&H research

4 International Co-Investigators International Co-Is are eligible on Research Grants, Research Networking, Follow-on Fund and some thematic calls Costs up to 30% of the 100% fec of a proposal can be requested Proposals must still be led by a UK PI Salary costs can be included in some circumstances but estates and indirect costs cannot Pilot scheme extended until December 2016

5 Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA) Partnership of funders across 24 European countries New call: Uses of the Past closing date for outline bids 9 th April 2015 Up to 22m, for large-scale, collaborative projects up to 1.2m, involving 4 countries or more 2 previous large-scale calls (2010 & 2013), high level of UK success.

6 Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) on Cultural Heritage and Global Change What is a JPI? A process whereby Member States agree, on a voluntary basis and in a partnership approach, on common visions and Strategic Research Agendas (SRA) to address major societal challenges. They allow member states to Co-ordinate and align research priorities AHRC is one of 17 Partners in this particular JPI, and another 8 countries are observers (other research councils are partners in other JPIs) Developed and Published a strategic research area Had a pilot call for smaller scale transnational research and networking proposals Currently assessing larger transnational research project proposals

7 Platforms EU funded projects that aim to enhance collaboration between social science & humanities researchers in Europe & other countries EqUIP: Europe India Trans-Atlantic Platform: Europe and the Americas Currently in the scoping stage for both projects looking at existing collaborations, barriers etc Aim to identify new ways of working, scope common areas of interest and identify priorities & opportunities for future collaboration between the countries involved.

8 On-going opportunities Research Networking: proposals involving international collaborations may apply for additional funding of up to 15,000, in addition to the 30,000 FEC scheme limit Lead agency agreements in place with FAPESP (Sao Paulo, Brazil) & NSF (US): FAPESP: applications can be submitted to the AHRC Research Grants scheme at any time & follow the same review process as AHRC standard grants but with reviewer input from FAPESP NSF (Social, Behavioural and Economic sciences): applications can be submitted to either AHRC or NSF (BBSRC & ESRC also operate under this agreement) (Note: doesn t cover all of AHRCs remit) Significant international components to programmes such as Translating Cultures, Open World Research Initiative (OWRI)

9 On-going opportunities International Placement Scheme. Annual scheme providing 2-6 month funded fellowships for PhD students & ECRs at world-leading international research institutions in USA, Japan and China Potential new opportunities: e.g. Digging Into Data; UnBox Newton Fund multiple partners funding research and activities related to overseas development assistance

10 Future directions/strategy Maintain and enhance existing partnerships Remain key partner in HERA Increasing high level interactions AHRC/EC (A&H advocacy) Influence international funding agendas and create new opportunities for UK researchers (currently T-AP for Europe working with The Americas and EqUIP with India) Ensuring that UK researchers can properly exploit existing opportunities. International Placement Scheme expand host organisations beyond US and Japan
