Dear prospective Health Out Loud member, As Program Lead of Health Out Loud s (HOL) Wellness Elective Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WE WRAP), it is with great excitement that my team and I share this recruitment package with you. With a focus on dynamic community engagement, HOL innovates knowledge translation methods to make health fun, relatable, and understandable. HOL was founded in 2010 as a student group, developed into a non-profit organization in 2014, and excitingly, became a CRA-registered charity in HOL primarily pursues three types of projects: technology-based, educational and community. Developed in 2017, the WE WRAP Program was created as a major community project. I joined Health Out Loud (HOL) in early HOL is a movement that has always provided a safe space to grow and take on new challenges. It is a strong network of old and new team members with a deep-rooted support structure - professionally and personally. Since joining, I have had the opportunity to work within and alongside multiple teams. Through capacity building and knowledge and resource sharing, HOL has helped to empower many of us to improve health through programs like WEWRAP. Initiating the WEWRAP Program early last year, our small team started with weekly meetings at the Second Cup, Bloor Street. Through driven brainstorming sessions, our team, project plan and WRAP networks slowly expanded. Months went by, and we carefully developed and fine-tuned a proposal that pitched a novel program encompassing conventional WRAP with electoral wellness workshops. Post-pitch, we received support and guidance from established programs like the Gerstein Centre. In January 2018, we successfully kick started our pilot program in collaboration with The STAR Learning Centre, St. Michael s Hospital. Going forward, we hope to scale our program to where it s needed most. Whether this may be partnering with different organizations, collaborating with established programs to identify local priorities or spotlighting existing priorities we have identified within our own networks, we want to make sure this program benefits as many people as possible. WE WRAP is quickly expanding. We are searching for new members to help nurture and develop this exciting initiative by joining our close-knit WE WRAP team. We are also very excited to offer summer internship positions. In addition to the WE WRAP Program, intern(s) will have the opportunity to assist and manage projects pertaining to the HOL s community team at large. You can apply to this in conjunction with any of our positions. If you are driven and community-minded, I invite you to join our team and help us use creative pedagogies to improve health and health literacy! I have full confidence in the We WRAP program - it is an initiative with the potential to make a lasting change but it s going to need a great deal of man-power and spirit. I hope that you will join our WEWRAP family! Yours Sincerely, Anum Shivji Arwani 3

What is WRAP? Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP ) is a self-designed prevention and wellness process developed to help overcome mental health challenges. WRAP is listed in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices. How is our program different? Wellness Elective Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WE WRAP) is a 10-week community program that guides a personal recovery process, helping participants discover their own wellness tools. WE WRAP combines different participant identified wellness electives (e.g.- nutrition, physical activity, meditation, art therapy etc.) with the standardized WRAP components and topics. Our journey so far Currently, HOL is collaborating with the STAR Learning Centre, an adult education program that helps people transition from homelessness into housing, to pilot our WE WRAP program. Based on feedback from other established organizations such as the Gerstein Centre, we hope to scale this program to also benefit different demographic groups, including young mothers, people who identify with the LGBTQ2 community, newcomer youth, young adults etc. 5

I became a part of the Health Out Loud (HOL) family in 2017 with very little experience in the non-profit sector. Since that time I have and continue to learn so much. My passion for fitness and its benefits to mental health led me to an opportunity to become a WRAP facilitator. I have worked with youth groups within Toronto who have encouraged a growing understanding of mental health. HOL has added to my growth by allowing me to be a part of the birthing process of the WE WRAP program. In working alongside individuals with a goal to extend knowledge about health to community members across the city, research, collaboration, budgeting, time-efficient planning, and resource sharing are just some of the ingredients involved in creating impactful change. In working with HOL and now facilitating the WE WRAP program, I am humbled by the learning experience by each participating individual. As we sit through the program each week, participants share experiences and emotions that inspire positive progression in our journey. WE WRAP introduces tools that can be used daily to manage daily life and crisis. In addition to the WRAP plan, participants are encouraged to explore a variety of wellness tools that may be of benefit to various dimensions of their wellness - short and long term. I am thrilled to be a part of WE WRAP and even more excited to see the growth in its participants and the program. Jennifer Couto WRAP Facilitator/Fitness Specialist ( Present) 19

HOL isn t just a charity that aims to create lasting change by pushing boundaries and connecting through a web of lasting community relationships and partnerships, it is a family. Taken from my experiences, the WE WRAP Program has the potential to take an existing resource that is effective and evidence-based and, add to it participant identified wellness tools that will have a long-term impact on the way individuals and groups can self-care and self-advocate. Having helped to facilitate the pilot WE WRAP project, we are already exploring tools and next steps on how to successfully take the project onto the next level. I m so excited to see what come of this newest HOL expansion project! Anum Shivji Arwani Project Lead ( Present) If you join, I believe you'll be scaling a meaningful project with what I feel is an amazing group of friends who really care - about you, the community, WE WRAP, and Health Out Loud. There ll be memorable inside jokes and socials. There will be a driven team with which to fail, keep trying, and succeed. You'll have a chance to genuinely connect with communities, a safe space for developing skills, and have the chance to have a defining role in a new idea. Being HOL s founding managing director has been a fun, transformative, and humbling core part of my life. I ve made some of my closest friends through our team and it s them that have enabled my journey. Community work is challenging. It s lot of unseen, hard and resource-constrained work. It means patience because years of efforts are just baby steps towards impactful change; challenges are often deeply rooted and systematic. Our team is what makes it possible for me; they turn big projects into something reasonable, inspire me through their aspirations, and have been my source of necessary breaks that keep me going, whether it s board games, warm fuzzies, or something else. I m proud and grateful. I ve learned so much from my relationships with community and team members, which I hope to be lifelong. Above all, I believe we ve built programs that are truly based on listening to clients and have real value. I believe we have achieved impactful change, even if there is much more to be done. Everyone s HOL journey is different. In your own way, I trust it will be worthwhile, whether it that means realizing a great capacity to impact others, finding strengths you never had, honing specific abilities, or something else altogether. Stephanie Wang Advisor/Managing Director ( Present) 20

Many of us aren t strangers to health. Good or bad, health plays a significant role in each and every one of our lives. Healthrelated items and information constantly surround us. From magazine articles, TV commercials, doctors visit, and even food labels, the amount of information can be daunting. Drink milk, it s good for your bones. Don t drink milk, it can make you fat!. In this sea of information, it can be tough to make the right choices that work best for us. As an individual with a long history of health problems, I have experienced firsthand how difficult it is to address them. Despite being in an information age, where solutions can often be searched for by a device that fits in the palm of our hands, it is surprisingly frustrating to find out how to improve our own health. Of course, there are general rules of thumb like reducing our junk food intake and exercising regularly, but what about more specifics? I like to think of health as a personal journey, where each individual has their own goals, issues, preferences and needs. I strongly believe that to help others with their own personal journey, we need to be able to empathize with them. During my move to Toronto, I was looking to continue my passion for health advocacy. While clothing runs for individuals experiencing homelessness and mental health galas were a right step, they lacked some sort of personal connection. After discussing my thoughts with a colleague, she suggested that I apply for an organization she spoke so passionately about. This organization was Health Out Loud (HOL). What makes HOL unique is their approach in the development of their programs. In tandem with personalized healthcare, HOL communicates with their community partners to identify and address the specific needs of their populations, a value that resonated with me. Through HOL, I ve been able to meet others with the same passion for improving the health of others. I ve been able to personally interact with participants and see them grow; all of which has been extremely rewarding. One of the most memorable and personal projects that I m currently working on is WE WRAP. WE WRAP expands on the traditional WRAP program by adding the option of personalized wellness electives, empowering participants to utilize their own strengths to lead their own recovery. Although I haven t had the opportunity to interact with these participants directly, I ve been able to hear of their successes and growths through my wonderful and highly passionate team. By introducing a seemingly simple change, we were able to make a significant impact on the lives of these individuals which has been truly rewarding. While working with HOL and the WE WRAP Program, there is one thought I always keep in mind; health is a personal journey, each of us with our own goals, issues, preferences and needs. Rather than defining your destination, to me, HOL and WE WRAP gives you the means to reach it. Troy Chow WE WRAP Specialist ( ) 21
