fundraising pack Children on the Edge looks after those young lives who are marginalised - it is life changing, raw and makes a critical difference to those who need us the most. I so admire their work. " " " " " " " " " " Bear Grylls

children on the edge BRInging forgotten CHILDREN FROm THE EDge TO THE CENTRE Children leading forgotten lives in barren, dangerous places. Those without parental care, neglected or persecuted by their governments, ignored by international media and missed by large overseas agencies. These are children on the edges of society. They are forgotten, but not by us. We bring these children to the centre by creating them a safe, child friendly environment. Here we restore the ingredients of a full childhood by generating hope, life, colour and fun. In Soweto slum, Uganda, our Child and Community Centre provides safety, education and nutrition to 300 children living in appalling conditions. In makeshift Bangladesh border camps, our programmes provide education to over 2,700 refugee Rohingya children from Burma. Nearby our Learning Centres ensure nutrition, education and play are provided for over 900 working children. In India, we provide education and nutrition for 1645 untouchable Musahar caste children, suffering from discrimination, exclusion and exploitation. In Kachin State, Burma, we provide Early Childhood Development to 1440 children, internally displaced by conflict and living in hard to reach refugee settlements. We d like you to support a small organisation that makes a massive impact. Our projects are innovative, effective and tangibly improve the lives of the most marginalised children. 5 Get inspired Web-wise Once you ve got your online sponsorship page running, use social media to publicise it to your nearest and dearest. Prizes, prizes, prizes Ask companies to donate bottles of wine, chocolates or vouchers that you can use as prizes for quizzes and raffles. Everyone s a winner Host a Vegas style poker night: 10 to play, gamble with chips, winners get prizes. Or try a raffle. It s an old favourite, and a nice little earner. Cash for questions Pick the brains and pockets of local punters by hosting a Quiz Night at your favourite pub. Spring clean Empty that cupboard under the stairs and flog your old junk on ebay or at a car-boot sale. Dancing on the ceiling Hire a function room over a pub (often free on a weeknight) and invite your friends to get down for a good cause. Food for thought Invite your friends over for a fundraising dinner at 10 a head or organise a pancake party for a larger group. Childhood is the first precious coin that poverty steals from a child. - Anthony Horowitz place your bets Organise a sports event sweepstake. Your friends pay 3 and pick a team out of a hat. The winner gets half the total cash and the rest is donated.

Nobody says no to cake Bake some cakes and cookies and take them down to your sports club on a Saturday or offer them around the office. Double your money Ask your company to open the corporate wallet and match what you raise. grab a cuppa If you work at a large organisation the database asking your colleagues to sponsor you the price of their morning coffee. It adds up fast Share your ideas on Facebook If you have a Facebook profile you can share your fundraising ideas by joining the Children on the Edge Facebook group. Keep up to date via Twitter Fundraising ideas as well as updates about the work of Children on the Edge are regularly posted on Twitter. Follow our tweets at Keep it legal Make sure to read the keeping it legal page so that any money you raise is dealt with appropriately.

Working children in their home of mud and sticks in Cox s Bazar, Bangladesh fundraising tips Set up an online fundraising page There are several online donation sites that help you collect your sponsorship money. JustGiving and VirginMoneyGiving are two of the most popular and are both great ways to publicise your fundraising. Sign up at or and follow their step by step guides on how to set up your page. Just 10 can buy a blackboard for a class in Bangladesh. Utilise social media Link to your fundraising page on Facebook/Twitter your friends may get bored hearing about your efforts but often people who intend to sponsor need a little memory jog to actually part with their cash Consider writing a training blog Not only does this show other people what you re up to but it is also really good motivation to hit the road for a run so that you have something new to blog about. It also provides a really easy method of keeping family and friends in the loop and gives them a simple link to pass on to their own contacts. Recruit your family and friends It s amazing how much Mum can squeeze out of her friends when armed with a sponsorship form match funding from your company A lot of businesses will pledge to match whatever you raise pound for pound or will let you pass an around the office asking for sponsorship. It is definitely worth speaking to your employer to see what support they can offer. Ask friends to give a pint Sometimes asking for several smaller donations is easier than asking for large donations especially in the current economic climate. If 30 friends can donate 3.50 to your fund which is the average price of a pint of beer then you have already raised 105 Think creatively What skills do you have? Do you belong to a club who could donate a evening s bar takings? Could you run a sweepstake at work on your marathon time?

Type to enter text Gift Aid it Gift aid can significantly increase the amount of money we can receive from a donation. For example, if someone offered you 1 per mile and therefore handed over 26 in total, with a completed Gift Aid form that becomes worth ( 26 plus 25%). Online forms generate gift aid information automatically but if you can make sure the individual completes a written declaration if donating offline, then HMRC will honour the gift aid pledge. Network like crazy You never know who will want to encourage you in your marathon training, so chat about your race and ask for advice from fellow marathon runners. Talking about the cause can lead to interesting connections and inspire possible sponsors so don t be shy in spreading the word. Run an event If you have time in your busy training schedule, organising a little (or big) event can be a really good way to boost your fundraising efforts. Perhaps a coffee and cake morning or a Come Dine With Me style event. The sky is the limit and it will really depend on your own time constraints. It doesn t work for everyone but if you have time, you ll find it can be a great way to get friends on board. 9 will feed a child breakfast for a year in Uganda Do let us know if you need any help, we want you to enjoy this process and not feel like it is a chore We can provide you with resources about the work of Children on the Edge and further fundraising advice if you need it. Good luck The programme encourages the integration of Rohingya and Bangladeshi children

keeping it legal fundraising legalities Collecting money and fundraising for charities is governed by a number of regulations to ensure that people do not secure funds fraudulently. When you are fundraising on behalf of Children on the Edge please follow the guidelines below: On any printed materials you produce (including letters, tickets, posters etc.) you must include the statement: Children on the Edge is a registered charity number Anyone collecting for charity in a public place needs a Street Collection Licence from the local authority (the council or metropolitan borough). To collect sponsorship or donations on private property, such as a supermarket, a single pub or a train station, you need the permission of the owner or store/station manager. Anyone collecting from one place to the next (this includes business premises like pubs as well as houses) needs a House to House Collection Licence from the local authority (the council or metropolitan borough). To hold a lottery or raffle you will need a Lotteries Licence from your local authority unless the raffle is held at a one-off event like a dinner or dance. In this case, tickets can only be sold during the event and the result must be drawn at the event. If you aren t sure, get in touch Sending money to us By post All cheques should be made payable to Children on the Edge and posted to: Children on the Edge, 5 The Victoria, 25 St Pancras, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 7LT. If you are collecting money from lots of sponsors then the easiest way of sending us the funds is to send us one cheque at the end of your fundraising. In this case, please remember that cheques from your sponsors will need to be made payable to you and please return your sponsorship form alongside your cheque. If you send us a large number of cheques, you may want to send them by registered post. It is not safe to send cash in the post.

By credit or debit card If you have paid money from your sponsors into your own account and would like to pay by credit or debit card you can do this online. Go to to find out more. Online Set up your own JustGiving page to collate your donations - this will automatically collect Gift Aid (if eligible) and process the money direct to us. IMPORTANT: If you open a bank account to collect your fundraised money, you must NOT use the name Children on the Edge as any part of the account name. This has legal implications with the Charity Commission. We suggest you name any accounts: Charity Fundraising Account or something similar. If you are a UK Taxpayer and are sending us a cheque, please remember to send us your Gift Aid Declaration (enclosed in this pack) so that we can claim back the tax and increase your donation at no extra cost to you. You cannot Gift Aid money that you have not personally donated.

You could give us more money without it costing you a penny IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL DONORS ABOUT GIFT AID Last year charities got an extra 472 million to fund their work, but if everyone had used Gift Aid, it could have been much, much more. Using Gift Aid means that for every pound you give, the charity gets an extra 28 pence from the Inland Revenue, helping your donation go further. Gift Aid allows the charity to reclaim the basic rate of income tax you've paid on the donation. If you re a taxpayer, this means that 100 can be turned into 128 just so long as donations are made through Gift Aid. Imagine what a difference that could make, and it doesn't cost you a thing. On top of that, if you re a higher rate taxpayer, you can claim further tax relief on the donation in your annual tax return. 1. ARE YOU A ONE-OFF DONOR? Have you have donated to Children on the Edge since March 2004 or are likely to do so in the future? ACTION: Please complete the form overleaf and return to the Children on the Edge office at the address below. 2. ARE YOU A REGULAR DONOR? Are you are a long standing supporter and completed a gift aid form prior to March 2004? ACTION: It is essential that you complete another form and return to the Children on the Edge office to ensure we keep getting the extra funds. This is due to our change in charitable status last year and the fact we now have our own registered charity number. If you have any questions or are unsure about any aspect of this form, please contact Children on the Edge on Thank you to all our supporters. Children on the Edge, 81a North Street, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 1LQ
