Research Visits: Short-Term Scientific Missions Dr Katerina Kaouri Cyprus University of Technology, Cyprus Management Committee Member, MINET
Introducing me DPhil (PhD) Applied Mathematics, Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (OCIAM), 2005 SOnic Boom European Research Programme (SOBER) mathematical modelling of sound over long distances A truly European academia-industry collaboration: several European universities, AIRBUS, Dassault Aviation)
Study Groups and Modelling Weeks. At Oxford I got initiated to Study Groups and other modes of collaborating with industry Also, ECMI Modelling weeks: 2001 as a student (Klagenfurt) 2005 as an instructor (Barcelona) KAOURI - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
KAOURI - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Currently Expert Scientist at the Cyprus University of Technology (Limassol, CY) Non-permanent position, hours teaching per week No Industrial/Applied Maths Department or Centre Research applications of mathematics and statistics in real-life problems 2015 onwards: MINET Management Committee Member great for me and for Cyprus! KAOURI - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Outside academia : Business consultant, Boston Consulting Group, PRAXI Network (part of Enterprise Europe Network), etc. - various industries 2015 onwards: Co-Founder and Co-Director of the non-profit SciCo Cyprus communication of science through innovative and entertaining methods Dissemination partners in EU proposals Innovative events: Mediterranean Science Festival visitors KAOURI - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Collaboration is essential to real problem-solving Team of consultants Study Group team
Short-Term Scientific Missions COST website: COST strives to support European scientists in their networking activities. STSMs allow scientists to learn from an institution or laboratory in another COST country a concept of particular interest to young scientists. KAOURI - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
MINET in particular Preference to visits to or from Industry Any other industrial mathematics related visit considered: complete a piece of follow up work after a Study Group prepare a joint grant proposal co-author a peer-reviewed, journal publication Applications where another MI-NET objective is combined (introductory lecture, participation in a Modeling Week, Study Group etc.) are viewed favourably. Up to now: 12 STSMs Grant Period 1, 5 STSMs Grant Period 2 Preference to Early Career Investigators (up to 8 years post- PhD) KAOURI - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Logistics Duration of an STSM: 1 week three months (6 months for Early Career Researchers) Applicants engaged in research in an institution from a COST country participating in MINET (31 countries) The destination should also be a COST country MINET max. amount: 2000 Euros Look at MINET s website for the next funding call ( 26 August 2016 for activities from May 2017 onwards KAOURI - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Process: Before the STSM Ask letter of support from home institution (PhD students: ask your supervisor)-one page Ask letter of support from host (one page) if you already have a collaboration fine but if not plan and discuss the proposed research with the host well in advance Make sure that you are going to do industrial mathematics Write/update your CV including any publications Write Motivation letter: why you want to do the STSM and what you think it will offer you (one page) Kaouri - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Process: Before the STSM Create an E-COST profile Fill in application form in E-COST, download and send with necessary documents to (Filipa Vance) Kaouri - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Evaluation of your STSM application Prof. Tim Myers, STSM Manager Also other MINET members involved depending on situation Tim sends decision to the Grant Holder An official acceptance letter is issued by the Grant Holder through E-Cost Kaouri - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Process Flow Chart ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, Kaouri - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16 16/06/16
Questions? Ask Filipa Vance Kaouri - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Words of wisdom from Prof. Myers What is desirable in an application is a clear industrial mathematics motivation and a strong possibility of a final product. This final product could for example be a research paper, an industrial report or a grant application. For example, a number of talks at the current ECMI conference are related to work from STSM funding (Francesca Font, Katerina Kaouri, Brendan Florio, Gary O'Keeffe, Kevin Devine, etc.) Kaouri - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Process: After the STSM You do not get reimbursed if you do not write a report (within 30 days)! Report to be approved by host and Prof. Tim Myers The report will need to contain the following information: Short discussion of background/motivation for the visit Description of work undertaken during the visit and main results (if appropriate, include pictures) Expected outcomes, I.e. publications, plans for future collaborations How the STSM funding aided the research process Some reports can be found on MINET s STSM blog: KAOURI - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Kaouri - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Industrial Mathematics, CY Cyprus: A Mediterranean island, population less than one million 8 universities Minimal investment in Applied Mathematics (no permanent positions for Applied Mathematics) Reasons: lack of understanding by academics and policy-makers of the power of Applied Maths, financial crisis, Industrial Mathematics is in embryo stage We are helping the embryo grow through: Study Groups with Industry the 1st in Cyprus in December 2016 with funding from MINET MSc proposal in Industrial and Applied Mathematics TWINNING H2020 proposal KAOURI - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
STSMs help a lot Currently, in CY, non-permanent academics have very limited local access to research visit funding and funding for conferences Similar situation in other EU countries (more difficult in the Eastern and Southern regions) KAOURI - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
STSMs help a lot MINET has been very helpful for my career During a recent STSM at the University of Oxford: I reconnected with researchers at the Mathematical Institute I worked on a research article with two leading applied mathematicians (Prof. Maini, Prof. Chapman) presenting the work tomorrow here I received training on how to set up a Study Group in Cyprus I attended the British Applied Mathematics Conference (April 2016): presented a research article on industrial maths (signal processing in submarines - problem by Thomson Marconi Sonar Ltd.) Attended many talks and networked KAOURI - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
1 st Study Group in Cyprus 5-9 December 2016 You are all welcome! Kaouri - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
The Cyprus SG: Identified problems (tentative) 1) Mathematical modeling of glass cutting (Porfyrios Glass LTD, SME). Industry: Manufacturing - Glass Production 2) Predicting energy production from photovoltaics using historic data from neighbouring photovoltaics (Dr Alexandros Charalambides, Department of Env. Sci. and Tech., CUT). Industry: Energy - Renewable Energy Sources 3) Optimization of a new detergent product with specific rheological parameters. (Klean4you, SME). Industry: Detergent manufacturing 4) Analysis of biomedical data and genotype-phenotype correlation (Molecular Genetics Thalassaemia, The CY Inst. of Neurology and Genetics). Industry: Biomedical Research Many other problems exist opening a call Kaouri - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
Thank you! Kaouri - ECMI 2016, Santiago de Compostela, 16/06/16
