FINISH LINE YOUTH FOUNDATION LEGACY GRANT The Legacy Grants will be awarded to qualifying organizations in need of improvements and/or renovations to existing buildings, grounds, and property or for new facilities and/or grounds. Mission Statement (2000 The mission of Sammamish Rowing Association is to spark and nurture a passion for the sport of rowing in people of all ages. The only rowing program for miles around, SRA draws kids from diverse schools, neighborhoods and towns and puts them in boats to work together in ways they experience nowhere else. In a time when social media and texting have dramatically reduced personal interaction, SRA teens quickly learn vital life lessons about communication and working together. Rowers must work cooperatively just to get their boats in and out of the water, let alone make them move smoothly and quickly. Listening to coaches and following commands from coxswains make the difference between defeat and a gold medal at the end of a race. Rowers submit to something larger than themselves: the team and the boat. There are no stars in rowing, and each member of the team plays an equally vital role in the boat. In the ultimate team sport, athletes must work in perfect synchronicity at all times. Teens engaged in a sport such as rowing develop physical fitness, emotional stamina, and mental discipline. They earn a higher GPA, miss fewer days of school, and trigger fewer discipline problems. Teens who participate in sports like rowing develop social skills and a positive self- image; learn to work as part of a team; are better able to manage success and disappointment; and make healthy choices about friends and activities. The athletes of today become the leaders of tomorrow. The benefits of rowing are invaluable to teens, and at SRA we are determined to inspire and sustain a passion for this life- changing sport in our kids. Please indicate how long the agency/organization has been in existence (255 Sammamish Rowing Association was founded in In just 18 years we have gone from 30 rowers to over 1,000 people coming through our doors each year. Please describe other successful programs that have been run by this agency/organization (2000 SRA runs Row- for- a- Day programs for teens who are brand new to the sport. Once kids decide to register with SRA, the organization offers programs at three levels. Recreational is for those who want to row for fun and develop basic skills but who are not interested in or ready for competition. Novice is for teens who are learning to row and want to compete at the basic level. Experienced is for athletes who have developed a certain mastery of the sport and are prepared to compete at more advanced levels. Experienced team members compete and win on the local, regional, and national level.

SRA also offers Row- for- a- Day, Learn- to- Row, novice, and experienced programs for adults. In addition, SRA is committed to developing an adaptive rowing program in order to make rowing opportunities available to teens and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. (2000 Sammamish Rowing Association conducts multiple Row- for- a- Day programs to introduce teens to rowing and to SRA. These three- hour programs, staffed largely by SRA teen volunteers, consist of land training on rowing machines, dock training in moored boats, and training on the water with experienced rowers leading the way. SRA also runs introductory three- week camps, bringing in over 150 new teenage rowers each summer. Many summer camp coaches are former SRA rowers. Almost half of summer rowers register for fall classes at the conclusion of their camps. SRA is the only rowing program within a wide radius. Teens come from miles around and from more than 50 area schools and at least 10 different school districts. Demand for SRA s programs exceeds the club s current capacity to provide rowing opportunities for all the area teens who seek it, so the club does not run recruiting activities beyond its Row- for- a- Day events and summer camps. In, fact, the club maintains a waiting list for dozens of teens seeking to join the program. Nonetheless, as a community organization, SRA maintains a no- cut policy and is open to all teens on a first- come, first- served basis. Many teens struggle to fit in with organized sports. They try football, volleyball, basketball and soccer, but nothing works. At SRA, teens who never succeeded in sports find a home. New rowers fall in love with the sport and become a part of the team. They learn that, in rowing, success is entirely a result of effort and dedication. The thirst for excellence that SRA teens develop in their sport carries over to the rest of their lives. Countless rowing parents attest that, once their kids began to row, they improved their homework, raised their grades, and made smarter, healthier choices about friends and activities. How long has the program been in existence? (255 character maximum) Sammamish Rowing Association was founded in In just 18 years we have gone from 30 rowers to over 1,000 people coming through our doors each year. Abstract/Need statement. Please identify project/program title, and an in- depth description of the funding need that includes anticipated sustainability. If applying for "Special Legacy or Founder's Grant, please include a description of existing facilities so that comparison of final project to existing conditions can be made. (2,000 SRA is the only rowing program on Seattle s Eastside and has grown from 30 rowers to more than 1,000 people coming through the doors each year. A viable facility is essential to sustain current numbers and future growth. SRA is constructing a new boathouse to house its rowing shells and to provide a training facility for its teen athletes. SRA is building in phases, as funding allows. The boat bays are complete and the shells are moved in, but SRA now seeks funds to build out the remainder. The second floor will

include an indoor workout space where teen rowers can train on land days, as well as desperately needed restroom, shower, and locker facilities. (FOR LEGACY GRANT.) Currently, SRA s hundreds of teen rowers train in an unheated, uninsulated boatshed, which has minimal electricity and no running water. They rely on port- a- potties instead of flush toilets and on hand sanitizer instead of hot water and soap. They must remember to bring drinking water from home, as SRA has never had running water. They use weight equipment and rowing machines that are rusting due to cold, damp conditions. The roof leaks, and the building has ruts in the floor, holes in the walls, birds in the rafters, and rats in the corners. People are often stunned to learn SRA runs such a strong club out of such inadequate facilities. Yet every day, teens train with SRA for our shared values of sportsmanship, fitness, commitment, teamwork, community and camaraderie, and respect for our surroundings. Anticipated project outcomes include conducting all land training in the new facility and providing fully functional restrooms. As the project will be finished once construction is complete, sustainability is not in question. Nonetheless, ongoing maintenance will be necessary, so SRA maintains a contingency reserve and also builds maintenance costs into class fees. Programs operating out of the facility also will be sustained by class fees. Project Budget Detail: An in- depth explanation of the financial plan for proposed project/program that includes an excel detailing the budget, and is attached. The boathouse structure has been erected, and the ground floor is substantially complete. Remaining work includes building out the second floor, demolishing the old boatshed, and creating a secured area for coaching launches. The balance of the project is estimated to cost $1 million, and a detailed budget is attached. For revenue, see Other Sources of Funds. Please list pre and post program objectives. Please provide a description of the plan to measure and evaluate the results of the project (2000 Because the requested grant funds are for construction, the objectives are to make significant progress on construction. Specifically, SRA s first priority is to improve the quality of existing programs by making the second- floor bathrooms and workout space available to hundreds of teen rowers. From the perspective of first- aid, safety, hygiene and hydration, bathrooms with running water will be a major milestone. Programmatically, SRA intends to use the completion of the boathouse as a springboard for development of new programs. Given that finishing the boathouse is a critical first step, these programs are in the discussion- and- research phase; plans to measure and evaluate will be developed over time. While SRA s after- school programs are at maximum, with lengthy waiting lists for its junior teams, SRA has significant excess capacity during daytime hours and on certain evenings, which it intends to use for new programs. SRA is committed to building an adaptive rowing program, which will make rowing accessible to teens with physical and developmental disabilities. Currently no adaptive rowing programs exist in the Pacific Northwest. SRA has consulted with Tom Darling, the driving force behind adaptive

rowing at the largest rowing program in the United States, Boston s Community Rowing. SRA has also begun discussions with the City of Redmond and Outdoors for All, a national leader in providing instruction in outdoor recreation for people with disabilities. Both organizations are highly interested in partnering on an adaptive rowing program, which also has the support of SRA s state legislators. In addition, SRA also intends to use the new boathouse to develop programs which will provide additional revenue streams and make the project more self- sustaining, including corporate learn- to- row team- building events, erg (rowing machine) workout classes, and facility rentals. Other sources of funds. Please provide a summary of any other source(s) of funds pledged/received applicable to the project/program. Please provide names of funding sources and amounts. (2000 SRA has raised three fourths of the project s $4 million cost. The organization s own members have contributed nearly $2 million. King County Parks, SRA s most loyal and generous supporter, has contributed slightly over $1 million. Fund raising continues, with efforts targeting SRA members, their friends and families, local businesses, private foundations, and state government, to raise the final $1 million. The organization has firm commitments for $300,000 in grants. Fund raising in 2014 and 2015 is projected to bring in approximately $400,000. In addition, SRA is working with state legislators to request as much as $300,000 in the Washington State capital budget. Please describe how Finish Line Foundation would be recognized for supporting this program. (2000 SRA has a variety of methods for recognizing donors, depending on the size of the gift. Donors of significant gifts have the option to choose from several recognition opportunities, including naming rights to the new boathouse trophy wall, multipurpose room, deck, workout room, staff offices, locker rooms, or entrance hall. SRA will also recognize the Finish Line Youth Foundation by prominently displaying the Foundation s name and logo on SRA s website and/or team gear and in our weekly to thousands of members and supporters.

SRA also offers donors a unique opportunity to participate in team- building rowing events and offsite. Finish Line employees or customers will engage in land training on rowing machines and docked rowing shells. They then will get in eight- person shells, along with several veteran rowers, and experience real rowing on SRA s beautiful Lake Sammamish. By the end of the training session, Finish Line rowers will be able to race each other and will discover the thrill that comes from pulling together, working in perfect harmony, and moving a boat in unison and at speed. SRA then provides space for post- row meal and meetings. Please list the name and contact information for a corporate donor that currently supports your organization/program. (2000 H.D.
